Travel to As Many of These Offbeat Places As You Can in 2018

"The Museo Subacuatico de Arte de Cancun (the Museum of Underwater Art in Cancun) is a large-scale project by artist Jason deCaires Taylor and overseen by director Jaime Gonzales Cano of the nearby National Park. Located off the coast of Mexico, the project will be comprised of more than 400 life-size sculptures that will form a massive artificial coral reef in the clear, shallow waters that can be easily reached by divers, snorkelers and those who float over in glass-bottomed boats. The entire project is designed to promote marine life and increase biodiversity in the waters. By serving as a tourist attraction, the sculptures will also help to raise awareness among Cancun’s visitors about existing reef habitats and their plight. The project was designed to resemble humans to showcase their effect on the environment. The National Marine Park in Cancun currently brings in over 750,000 visitors each year. The first three sculptures from the project were installed in November 2009 and proved a huge success. They were placed carefully in a section of the waters that has been hit repeatedly by hurricanes and tropical storms, leaving an ecosystem in need of regeneration and redevelopment. The rest of the sculptures will be installed before the end of 2010. Going forward, El Arte de Conservacion (The Art of Conservation) will be the museum’s motto and it will place a special emphasis on demonstrating the interaction between environmental science, humanity and art." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

My review is a bit late but it’s worth documenting. My husband and I spent our honeymoon/anniversary in Mexico and decided to try scuba diving! My dream has always been to see wild life in their natural habitat, specifically sharks. Our dive instructor thought I was crazy but loved how excited we were and our passion for the ocean. Our diver went out of their way to make my dream come true. Sea turtles, sting rays, an octopus, various fish, and a nurse shark. Core memory made! The fact that he went out of his way to make our dreams come true (and kept us safe!) was worth a five star review.

Did scuba diving here, and it was fun! The waters were clear, and the museum was neat! Unique experience! Note, there was a lot of seaweed around there.

Amazing place for speed boat riding and snorkelling but some time the currents are too strong so one needs to be very cautious

The “glass bottom boat” was a pretty good time! We got our tickets through the MUSA site directly. It’s about $60 and $80 USD for the boat tour and boat & snorkel respectively. It’s good for those who can’t swim but still want to see the reef and the sculptures or those with little kids who aren’t comfortable snorkeling. The “glass bottom boat” is actually a semi-submersed boat with an underwater viewing deck that gives about a 180° view to the left and right. It seemed that the left side saw more of the reef than the right. And because of the design of the boat (tall and narrow), it’s pretty unstable with no view of the horizon in the viewing area, and a few people got seasick. It’s only a limited part of the reef and not all the sculptures but it’s still a good time. It takes about 2 hours to just do the boat tour and about 3 1/2 hours to do the boat and snorkel. You take a ferry-type boat for about 25-30 minutes to a “platform” where the snorkeling and the “glass bottom boat” are. Worth the trip if you aren’t a certified scuba diver.

I went scuba diving with “Scuba Diving Musa” company for my first-ever experience. We started with a training session in the pool, then headed into the Caribbean Sea. There were plenty of fish, lobsters, and even a huge moray eel. The statues and the car underwater were also great to see.

A really cool underwater museum. This is a great spot for all levels of divers with some stunning and moving sculptures. If you are lucky you may even spot some of the stunning wildlife that Mexico is famous for. A great dive spot for people looking for a fun and different dive.

My husband and I recently went on a scuba diving excursion to MUSA (Underwater Museum of Art) through Aquaworld, and it was an experience we won't forget! The package also included snorkeling at the Jungle Tour, and the total cost came to just under $400 USD - well worth every penny. Pre-Dive Preparation As first-time divers, we were required to take a 40-minute pool class to familiarize ourselves with the gear and learn essential hand signals for underwater communication. The training was effective and set us up for a successful open-water dive the following day. Dive Day On the day of the dive, we were pleasantly surprised to learn that all the other tourists in our group had scuba certifications or were getting certified that day. Even though we were the only ones without certification, our group leader was incredibly patient and made sure we were comfortable and safe throughout the adventure. Underwater Wonders Diving in MUSA is like entering a surreal underwater art gallery. The sculptures are fascinating, and the aquatic life around them is abundant. Our group leader pointed out various species of fish, enhancing our underwater experience. Photos & Videos For an additional $70 USD, we received a package of photos and videos capturing our dive. Though a bit on the pricey side, the visual keepsakes are a wonderful memento of our first dive. Final Thoughts Whether you're a seasoned diver or a newbie like us, MUSA through Aquaworld offers an unforgettable experience. The staff is professional, the gear is top-notch, and the underwater sights are mesmerizing. We had an amazing time and highly recommend this excursion to anyone looking for a unique underwater adventure. Overall, a five-star experience that we would love to do again!

I think this is a wonderful place to visit for divers mostly. If you plan to do the submarine be prepared to see only 4 statues (and that very fast, you won’t have time to admire them). For snorkeling i dont know, could be better - but the glass boat tour… i don’t recommend it for admiring the statues. :D
