Beautiful museum detailing all Lumière history, starting with Auguste and Louis' father. They had lots of antique models, some of them working, even! Reproductions of their first recordings, bits and pieces of the society's reaction at the time and some original photos. I thought the price was fair for the experience. As with most historical buildings, there was no elevator and the exhibits were accessible only by stairs. There were some audio descriptions but not for everything. In the boutique there were lots of old movies, too. All in all, a very interesting experience and definitely a must see in Lyon. After the museum you should also visit the spots they filmed their first recordings in the town too ;)

This was an amazing home converted into a wonderful museum about the Lumiere Brothers and their invention of the cinematograph. Lots of early inventions on show along with a great timeline of their evolution. Truly amazing what they gave to the world. Easy to get to from central Lyon via the metro. Took about 10 mins from Place Bellecour Metro. You can buy your tickets at the door. They also have a small gift shop. At the moment (June 2025) there is construction out front of what would be the front entrance. You enter from the side via the garden. The door isn't well labelled as the entrance (see pic with the banners draped down). Well with a visit.

This is an amazing home/villa converted into a wonderful museum about the Lumiere Brothers and their invention of the cinematograph. Lots of early inventions on shows us the great timeline of their evolution. Easy to reach the museum from central Lyon or Garre Parte-Dieu via the metro/tram. You can buy your tickets at the door or you can visit for free if you have the city pass. Also Audio guide available for a fee! Also the garden is nice. Unfortunately the hanger of the first movie has a shorter program so was not open when we visit the museum. Worth a visit if you want to have a nice history lesson for early years of cinematography.

For those interested in the origins of motion pictures, this museum records a vital part of that history. Well worth the time and modest cost. It’s quite a ways from the city center, so be prepared for a long walk, or take an uber/taxi. Nice cafe to enjoy after visiting as well.

Beautiful small museum in the Lumière mansion decorated circa 1900. I enjoyed how the exhibits traced the family history of the Lumière brothers and the historically important Tulle Gras Lumière to treat burn victims. In parallel, the museum traces the development of cinematography, culminating in the creation of the first film in 1895. This is a fascinating single subject museum leading to a deep understanding of this culturally significant event. Chapeau!

For a lover of cinema and photography, this is a must! Not only are the exhibit super well organized and have great historic value, but the place really plunges you into the atmosphere of early 20th century France inventors.

Very fun and small museum. Perfect to spend an hour or more in. Can reccomend the audio tour. The house is also so stunning, it be worth it on its own.

Wonderful place to learn the evolution of cinema. The museum as a building is also amazing. There is a nice little park outside where you can sit and relax as well

Yelp
We visited the Museum. If one is interested in the technical development/invention of moving images, as well as color still images, or in the brothers Lumiére, this is a worthwhile stop. The reception is a bit laid-back and un-customer-friendly. When we arrived we waited for the two people at the ticket desk to complete their conversation. We then showed our LyonCard and were provided entry, but not offered audioguides. No brochure was provided. We found that most of the signage on the displays is in only French, so we went back to the reception to ask if there was a brochure available. They looked surprised by the question, and offered an English brochure, which had limited info and was thus of limited help.

Yelp
My father is a Cinephile (and thinks that everyone else should be one) so he dragged me to this museum. This visit was my first and his ninth or tenth. Initially, I had no expectations because I could careless about cinema. HOWEVER, Upon walking around the museum, I became quite interested. I learned a lot of new things. In a beautiful old home, just looking at the architecture itself was a treat. The Lumiere family certainly knew how to live it up in Lyon ! There is one guided tour a day in the afternoon. Not to worry though, for a small charge, you can borrow an earphone (?) to have a self-guided tour with explanations. They have many languages - the first time ever in my life that I was first asked if I needed a GERMAN or ITALIAN earphone as it's usually SPANISH or JAPANESE. The staff were very friendly and entertained all my father's questions/observations/comments (we were in this museum about triple the time that an average visitor would be here because my father was having too much fun). This might explain the price of tickets that we were given ... there is a TARIF REDUIT (discount) for the following groups: UNEMPLOYED, STUDENTS, and SENIORS. It was probably assumed that we were in the first group. If in Lyon, I would definitely recommend a visit to here, cinephile or not. A solid four stars.

Yelp
This museum is a hidden gem! Such great architecture! I highly recommend getting the audio guide... all the signs are in French, but it is a cinematographic museum so it does have videos and such. I learned a lot and it was cool to be in the presence of such history! The park right outside the museum is nice and sitting in the sun was great!

Yelp
If you love photography, cinema, or anything technological, you should visit this place. If you love history and entrepreneurship, you should visit this place. If you have the Lyon City Card (and if you don't, what's wrong with you??) and you are trying to decide which 2-3 museums are worth your time during your time in Lyon, visit this place. Great audioguide. Beautiful house with a well-paced set of exhibits. The film upstairs is only in French and rather lengthy, but worth a watch - even my friend who doesn't speak French "got" a lot out of it.

Yelp
This is a charming little museum that I visited in 2004. There are English brochures available, so you can still enjoy the visit if you don't speak French. One of the best things about this museum is the gorgeous old house that it is located in. The exhibits talk about the history of the brothers and their inventions. They show some of the earliest films, which were much earlier than I knew. Additionally, there was an exhibit in the basement of "modern" documentaries made with the original cameras. It was very interesting to see that the technology was still useful. Another fun fact - the closest metro station was Sans Souci - no worries. #Yelp365 - 191/365
