This is my favorite museum in Paris. Hands down.
Marmottan has the largest Monet collection in the world, although most are not his best known works. But for those expecting a strictly Monet museum, know that it is much, much more.
Other than the Monet room, which I'll get to, the highlight of Marmottan for me is the room full of midieval works, primarily, it seems, pieces of hymn books and other art from churches and sacred texts from the 13th-16th centuries. Its amazing to see things that old.
But the real reason I go to this museum is Monet. I was a little disappointed this time around to find that the large canvas (think entire walls of a room size) Monets aren't there (just for now? anymore?), but I was really impressed with the work they've done on the Monet room. There are narrative placards in both French and English talking about different stages in his life, and video that loops constantly. While you may not see the most famous of the water lily and Japanese Garden paintings, you will see plenty of both, and many other lesser known works. I really can't get enough of Monet, though.
The gift shop is big, and diverse, and not all that expensive. I went in intending to stock up on gifts, but left with a bag of souvenirs for myself :)
As others have mentioned, Marmottan is kind of out of the way - the best way to get there is to take the Metro to La Muette and walk through the park. There was no line to get in the day we went, and the lack of crowds always makes a museum more enjoyable.
