7 Museums Worth Planning Trips Around in 2019

"Built at the edge of the Garonne River, in what was once the busiest port in 19th-century Europe, the Musée Mer Marine pays tribute to France’s rich maritime history and uses sea-themed art and artifacts to broach important issues such as climate change and the refugee crisis. The museum will put the finishing touches on its three-story permanent collection by early September; a restaurant, hanging garden, and wet docks housing a fleet of restored boats will follow next summer. Permanent displays cover oceanic evolution, maps and navigational instruments, and naval battles that turned the tide of history. Once complete, the collection will house upward of 10,000 marine objects, including a scale replica of the RMS Titanic, a hand-carved Bangladeshi moon boat, and an 82-foot racing yacht, last sailed by Team China in 2007 but originally used by the French in several America’s Cup regattas."

Great experience, huge number of scale model boats and a quick naval history. Kids love it. They also have some temporary expos.

Nicely set out with good exhibitions. Not too many interactive things but we'll worth a visit for an hour or so

Nice place than we were expecting)) Especially as I am not a big fan of Marine history, but this museum has many very interesting things and great ambiance. Very calm , or we were lucky not to fall into rush hour. We have spent 1,5 hours there, yet I thought that it would take like 30 minutes. The rest of my photos might tell...

Never bypass Musee Mer Marine, after your visit to La Cite du Vin. It is a 10 MN walk from it. İt is full of ship exhibits of all kinds: old wooden warships, contemporary french navy battle ships, transatlantics, a small gallery of paintings about sea and ships. The Titanic and ocean liner France replicas are exceptionally good.

This is a very good museum on the history of sailing and ships. The 3 floors are laid out in chronological order from early prehistoric time, to Phoenicians to modern aircraft carriers. The pieces also are explained in English, which is very helpful to tourists. The history of the Bordeaux port is well done and the very many model ships was amazing. Particularly interesting we’re the ships from 1600s and 1700s. Also interesting was Napoleon’s funeral ship. The history is rich and well displayed. The staff are very helpful and we thought it made for an educational afternoon. We recommend you take the time to see this museum.

Musée mer marine is a must visit in Bordeaux if you are a sea lover. It contains the history of sea and ships. There was also the temporary exhibition of art of the singer turned artist Obispo which was also interesting.

Small maritime museum with good brief history of sea exploration. Very nice models of ships. The highlight of the museum is the Leonardo da Vinci exhibition of his structural designs and ideas many of which were futuristic in his time. And his fascinating drawings of the human anatomy. A must see for Leonardo fans.

Superb and interesting museum very well laid out with simple and great explanations of maritime history. Impressive models and illustrations. Must visit for education on Plastic in our oceans - incredibly eye opening and every person should understand what damage is being done.
