Everything here is superlative — this is, without a doubt, one of the most interesting museums in the Savoie department.
Visit this museum if:
- you are passionate about history, ethnography or art (especially folk art)
- you are planning a longer trip through the Savoie region and want to be as well-informed as possible from the start
- you are passing through the city of Chambéry and don’t have much time — start with this museum and, if you have time left, you can visit others
The museum is not very big (but on the other hand, not small either), but it is so rich in artifacts that it would be impossible to describe it in a simple review, so I will focus on the collections and exhibits I liked the most (a subjective selection, of course):
- the 3D model of the Alps
- the numerous maps which, together with the accompanying information panels, illustrate the history of the region
- the medieval religious art objects (although I am not religious)
- the weapons collection (not very large, but the pieces are beautiful and well-preserved)
- the collections of figurines made by anonymous folk craftsmen
- the models of traditional houses from the region (each one displayed on a rotating plate, so by pressing a button you can view the model from different angles)
In addition, the staff is very friendly and admission is free (but even if it were paid, I would still give it 5 stars) and
A final clarification: access is not allowed with baby strollers, trolleys, suitcases, backpacks, etc. However, you can leave your luggage at the reception.
