What a fabulous surprise! I hadn't heard of the Amparo Museum until I arrived in Puebla. My Airbnb host recommended it to me and my husband in part for the views from their rooftop. We had to pay for admission to access the rooftop anyways, so we decided to breeze through the museum. Well, the fantastic collection made it impossible to rush.
The main lobby of the museum is a showpiece in itself. Spacious and light, it was occupied at the time by a huge sculpture in the centre. The collections are spread over three floors which are much larger than I expected. There is an impressive collection of Pre-Columbian artifacts, and there was an excellent exhibit of Mathias Goeritz works, along with other artists of a similar style.
For some reason, I found the layout to be a little bit confusing to navigate and I kept getting turned around. There were hardly any other visitors in there (really, we had the whole place to ourselves) and tons of security and museum workers, and they would laugh and smile and point us in the right direction time and again. It was quite cute.
Now, the reason we went in the first place: the rooftop. Gorgeous, gorgeous, stunning. Minimalist white tables and chairs, blue and white tile, pale wood, green plants, a cafe and a sublime view over the rooftops of Puebla. I could have sat up there all day and all night. Worth the price of admission alone. The fact that there is a world class museum attached makes the Amparo Museum a must visit.
