Beautiful restored building. Elegantly displays the historical nature of the Spanish style. Take your time and enjoy! Be sure to see the evening light show (once a week).

The museum is located in the city center of Merida and we can visit for free. It is a great place to spend the time to know about the history of the city.

Museo Casa Montejo is a beautifully preserved slice of colonial history nestled in the heart of Mérida, Yucatán. Built in the 16th century by Spanish conquistador Francisco de Montejo, this mansion-turned-museum offers a rare glimpse into the opulence and architecture of the colonial era. The façade alone is worth the visit—ornately carved in the Plateresque style, it’s a stunning example of Spanish colonial artistry. Inside, the museum is divided into historical and cultural exhibits. The historical rooms are furnished with period pieces that recreate the lifestyle of wealthy colonial families, while the gallery spaces often feature rotating exhibitions of contemporary art.

Entry is free!! And surprisingly hardly any visitors. Guess people got used to paying entrance fee 😉 Nice, well maintained place. Security takes it’s job seriously 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Very well kept and renovated with some of the original furniture. The rooms were air conditioned and the path well marked. Ask to view the mural, it pictures the hardship and reality of the indigenous people. Free admission.

Free to enter and worth the short visit. Lots of local artwork displayed in the gallery and even a short film in Spanish with English subtitles on the history of Merida. I found this interesting and worth the visit and time it took. Spend a little or a lot of time there is no rush.

This is a good free museum to visit in Merida. It’s got some fantastic colonial furniture and a helpful video showcasing the history of the house. It’s now owned by a bank, which put the museum on show as a public service I assume. If you are in the main plaza check it out.

We stumbled upon this place and it was a true gem! Free entry and beautiful architecture. Very interesting to learn about the history of Montejo and Merida as well.

Yelp
Museo Casa Montejo is the restored home of Don Francisco de Montejo - the conqueror of Yucatán and founder of the colonial city of Mérida (Maya people lived in the city before it was Merida). It dates from 1540 and was the house of Francisco de Montejo the Younger (in Spanish "El Mozo" - the Younger). It might be the oldest building in Mérida. Although the house was rebuilt in 1850, there are many original furnishings and direct descendants of the Montejo family lived here until 1978. Four rooms (a dining room, a living room, an office and a bedroom) house a permanent exhibition of furnishings from the historic building. There is a small room that shows a short film about the history of the house, which I found really interesting and informative (in Spanish with English subtitles) and a few rooms that house temporary art exhibitions. A bank bought the building and renovated it to open it as a museum. It's free to visit, so well worth exploring! The exterior and the interior are both incredibly beautiful. I'm glad we visited it on our first afternoon in Merida last week. It - with the cathedral and the palacio on the other sides of the Plaza Grande - really helped provide me with a historical context to understand more Yucatecan and Mayan history relevant for the rest of our trip!

Yelp
This is a nice little mansion of one of the historic figures of Merida. They have a few nice things and installations to take pics here and it's right by the main sqaure best of all where they do light shows, food trucks, and by the pok ta pok reinactment.

Yelp
This is a beautiful museum dedicated to the Montejo house. First it's free. A couple of rules Don't touch anything Stay in your lane Pics are okay but no flash Secondly there's quite a number of cool exhibits worth checking out so take your time and enjoy. Here's a couple of highlights. The vases from China are super cool how and when they got there is something that you'll find yourself remembering Then there's the Limoges cup and tea set. Make sure to check each one as it has a different scene. Skip the fashion rooms unless you're into that. Make sure to check the gigantic mirror and chandler On the other side of the building is a really cool staircase and further more are B&W pictures and a relic in a sealed case ( I'm such a tease ) Have fun.

Yelp
This is quick to tour, taking no more than 1/2 hour. Casa Montejo is endowed by Banamex Bank. Admission is free, though you gotta check your bag at the entrance and sign in. As is typical with the other museums in Merida, the security guards will monitor your every move, even if you are just scratching your nose. Casa Montejo is the preserved/restored home of the 16th/17th Century Montejo family from Spain. Very elegant to lay your eyes upon, as long as you don't think about how rotten the Montejo family, in their pursuit of wealth, treated the indigenous people of the Yucatan.

Yelp
Small quiet museum , in each room/exhibit there's a narrow walkway marked on the floor (boundaries). Pictures are permitted but with no flash . I was told we couldn't take video after the fact

Yelp
Don't go out of your way to visit this museum. It's free, but there really isn't much to see. You'll get to see a living room, a bedroom and a dining room from back in the day. I love taking photos, but I didn't really find anything interesting enough for photos here. Maybe just not my taste. BUT IT'S FREE! If you're already around here, might as well take a peek.
