This Museum of Antiquities is named in honour of J.J. (Johann Joachim) Winckelmann who was a German born archeologist and art historian who worked in the region and who was murdered in Trieste in 1769. The Museum comprises a building as well as a large 'garden' area. The museum displays several rooms with a large collection of Egyptian and Roman era-artefacts. The main panels are in English, but the individual item descriptions are only in Italian. The adjoining walled garden area was formerly the Garden of the Captain of the San Guisto fort/castle. In the garden is a collection of a large number of stone relics mainly from the last few hundred years, but there is also an excavation trench exposing Roman-era walls. In one section of the garden is the cenotaph of J.J Winckelmann. The garden area can be accessed from the San Guisto Cathedral and from Via San Guisto. Entry is free. Well worth a visit.

A very nice museum, if you like Antique I recommend. Only downside is that a lot of texts are only in Italian.

I hoping to make it one day to see the finding of a menorah oil lamp that my late great grandfather donated to this amazing museum.

Free museum. There were exhibitions from the Romans, Truscans and Egyptians. On your way to the museum, you see some more roman ruins.

I loved the part outside and inside there are some really great pieces, especially sarcofagus from Egypt and Greek vases. It is free, so I am giving 5 stars. Otherwise maybe it would be 4.
