"Contemporary Art in a Colonial Mansion The 17th century mansion that houses Oaxaca 's contemporary art museum is commonly referred to as "La Casa de Cortes," although it was in fact built over a century after the death of Hernan Cortes, it is certainly lavish enough to have been worthy of the great conquistador. The front of the building has the family seal of the Lazo de la Vega and Pinelo families, who were the home's original inhabitants. The state government acquired the building in 1986 and it housed a different museum prior to the opening of the MACO (Museo de Arte Contemporareo de Oaxaca) in 1992. The museum has 13 exhibit rooms, with the permanent collection on the second floor, and downstairs areas are used for temporary exhibits, which change frequently."

The first floor has some of the most unimpressive, least exciting exhibitions - and I have been working in the artworld for over 20 years. I’m glad the entry was free that day. The upper floor had some vaguely more interesting artwork.

A surprising and beautiful cultural center in an old colonial building with wonderful architecture and both anciant and modern art. We enjoyed wandering through this awesome structure and were lucky to find out about a free concert there that we attended that evening. Only one block east of the Zocalo.

Stunning building with a nice, smaller collection that really suits the space. I really loved discovering the old, nearly hidden design details on the upper level. $50 pesos donation for entry. Watch out for the mosquitos in the bathrooms. Jaja

A nice escapism of interesting Oaxacan artistes and amazing visions of their work. Over two floors. An interesting video highlighting about a drug smuggler. $50 MX Pesos Toilet had no toilet tissue and lock for cubicle does not lock correctly. So, anybody could have barge in.

There were two exhibits separated by two floors. The first floor was a bit over our heads - a series of videos in spanish w/English subtitles, but felt you really needed to understand the culture to appreciate. The second floor was an art exhibit. It was good. We only showed half in hopes you check the other half out. It was the better half by far! Let’s Connect, Be sure to check out @OurPaperPromises (IG) off

The museum was recommended by a friend. However due to the entire second floor being closed I didn’t really get the fair impression. Saying that the museum is free to visit so is still recommend everyone to drop in and see for themselves.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this place by accident. All the other museums in town were closed so I was surprised and excited to find an open one. The museum isn't tiny but it's also not very big. There's no way to spend more than an hour here. Likely, a thirty minute visit if you take the time to look/read. The art is contemporary so in my opinion, hit or miss. There were pieces which I loved and others which confused or repulsed me. It's all part of the contemporary art experience though, no? Go with the flow. Don't expect to find translations as the captions were in Spanish. Use a translation app. Oaxaca isn't particularly English-friendly overall. It's a bit of a struggle at times but I'm learning Spanish so it was good practice. Either way, this is contemporary art. I think you can still appreciate and enjoy it without having all the context/background. Very cheap entrance fee. 20 pesos = 1 USD.

Yelp
I'm kind of sad to write this review. I'm a tourist in Oaxaca, with very limited Spanish. I'm trying, but have a long way to go. The museum itself is an amazing building, with really interesting exhibitions. However there was only English translations for one exhibition, in which there was a collaboration with international artists. There was a time exhibition/ installation which looked really interesting so I asked the receptionist politely if there was a translation in English ( I asked in Spanish as she didn't speak any English). From what I could gather the Spanish explanation was exploring Stephen Hawkins theories of time- impossible to follow without fluency in Spanish. She said no and then just continued with her work- end of discussion. So I guess you like my money but don't want me to understand any of your artists work??? Every major museum in nyc has translations into English, Spanish, Chinese, so maybe I'm spoilt, but the attitude I got was the most unwelcome I've felt in this city.

Yelp
This place was upset my toddler was running, that is fair. I asked if I could use a stroller to make things easier: answer was no, also fair. I asked for my money back since I hadn't even walked in at this point: answer was no. Essentially I feel robbed. Would not recommend
