"Zapopan is mostly known for its 17th-century basilica and adjoining convent, as well as some parish churches and shaded squares with splashing fountains. The Museo de Arte Zapopan (MAZ) can therefore come as a surprise, sitting on the city’s pedestrian-only mall amid vendors selling street food and handicrafts. Founded in 2002, the museum includes several large exhibition spaces that house temporary shows by leading contemporary artists. It’s the sort of space that would not seem out of place inMexico City, or even New York, but in Zapopan feels like a secret discovery for anyone interested in Mexico’s contemporary art scene. An extra bonus: admission is free."

Super nice contemporary museum. Super advanced for the neighborhood. Wholesome. Seeing it today is definitely how I want to finish my stay in Guadalajara. Nice overall only missing their own cafe. They were working on another area while I went.

Nice museum. There’s a lot of parking lots around if you go in car, and there’s a bus stop one block away. The museum have different expositions so check the web page. The pictures are from two different expositions

Like others said, it’s a small museum, I was liking the little they had, but did not like the officer following us around. Why? I was just trying to enjoy the museum, did not like that. I had to leave, it felt very uncomfortable.

Really interesting modern art museum. The collection is small but impactful. Entrance is free and everyone working there was friendly!

the museum was smaller than I thought.. there were only three-four parts of halls to exhibit different stuff, to be honest no much to see, and I don’t really get what they were trying ro show, everything was totally different... you only need like half hour to see all the stuffs they got, but the good thing is that it’s free to enter! It’s better that you follow their account or location on Instagram to see whether there are more things that you might be interested 非常想念台北市立美術館...

Went on a Thursday. It was $0 to get in and they were open until 10 PM that night. I thought the exhibits were curated nicely, they had interesting subjects and were thought provoking.

Yelp
Loved visiting Museo de Arte de Zapopan (MAZ). The museum is free admission every day and it is a great add on to checking out Basilica de Nuestra Senora de Zapopan. The museum is located just off of Plaza de las Americas, across from the Zapopan letters, and on the way to the Monumento Arcos de Zapopan. The exhibits we saw during our visit included Ojos Obsidianos by Donna Huanca, Los de Abajo (The Underdogs) by Mark Bradford, and Ano del Usagi by Leiko Ikemura. Bradford's Mural, Man of Fire, was particularly incredible to see after seeing the Orozco murals at Hospicio Cabañas in Guadalajara. Bradford created his mural in corresponding colors to Orozco's of the same name. We ended up checking out Huanca's exhibit twice. 1) Because we really enjoyed it and also 2) because it was in an air conditioned space and it was very, very hot the day we visited.
