I visited the MUPO in July 2025 and left with mixed impressions. While I always appreciate spaces dedicated to showcasing local talent, I found the current exhibitions underwhelming given Oaxaca’s rich and diverse artistic landscape.
Some works felt more decorative than expressive, reminiscent of the colorful, animal-themed apparel often found in tourist markets.
Additionally, the photography exhibitions, although visually pleasant, didn’t offer much in terms of originality or critical perspective. They felt more like competent snapshots than thought-provoking visual narratives.
Considering the caliber of artists Oaxaca is known for, the curatorial choices left me wondering about the selection criteria. I hope future exhibits reflect more of the boldness, complexity, and cultural richness that Oaxacan art truly represents.
