Museo Histórico Regional de Ensenada

A lovely and unique museum: the building that served as government offices, military barracks, municipal prison, hospital and school.... Learned a lot about the history of lovely Baja California

Here is a small piece of Ensenadan History. They no longer have a jail in the center of town. But that doesn't mean they don't exercise the strong arm of the law here. Very interesting place to visit. It is now a historical museum. It is free and open to the public. Donations are appreciated. They also have a free, well maintained baño.

This is the old public jail of Ensenada which was closed, I think, 30 years ago. The tour is free and has lots of points of interest. For a good scary feeling about what it might have been to be incarcerated there, check out those tiny cells! Later walk across the street to the Megaburro cafe for a delicious meal and a margarita!

Free entrance to this museum is totally worth it. Feel free to leave some donations to keep this place open. :) it’s a old Mexican prison

A small free history museum with an overview of Baja from the Precambrian to the present. Most exhibits in the main gallery are signed in English and Spanish. A fascinating temporary exhibition on the local Japanese-Mexican community was Spanish only.

Price of admission is optional donation. Interesting displays and exhibits. Very much worth visiting.

Not huge, but it's definitely a place to wander around freely and observe museum history. Sign in at the front. Self guided tour. Low maintenance place. You can see old jail cells, guard towers, courtyard in front center, etc. Not much happens around here, but you can read some English and Spanish texts along the way. Didn't see public restrooms here. There's a staff onsite if you have any questions. Again, it's a much smaller museum than most other museums. Free admission. Follow the blue footprints on the ground and it will guide you to the end. Most people can finish the small tour and read everything within 10-15 minutes to get a better understanding of this landmark. It's still a nice and short addition to visiting Ensenada before leaving.

I don't have much to add to the other reviews other than it's historical, it's quaint, and it's free. You can tell the museum is kept up with passion and dedication. It's a little ways off from the ports, but worth the trip.

We found this wonderful little museum when we disembarked from our cruise ship in Ensenada. It is in town on a side street a few steps from the busy main tourist area, which we avoided. The museum is located in an old jail and contains many artifacts and some interesting local history. Visitors can walk into any of the old jail cells for photographs and to view the artwork. When we visited, workers were sifting through some gravel that they dug up from an archaeological site. This little gem of a museum is free. In fact, we offered to make a donation and they do not accept them!

We came here to expose the kids to some true Ensenada culture. There was an opportunity for them to see indigenous pottery and artifacts from the Kumiai and Pai Pai but not much from Cucapa people. They offer summer camp Tues-Friday 4 hours each day where the kids do hands on activities. On our visit they were learning about the dinosaur fossils and cave paintings found in Ensenada. It was a nice small group that was a great opportunity for kids to learn more about Ensenada.

Very fun historic preservation of my ancestors. I loved the exhibits. Overall we found this place very enjoyable.

Old military garrison and prison now serving as a museum. Building looks like a castle outside, but inside has a variety of exhibits. Most signs are bilingual. Also has small area for temporary exhibits.
