10 Best Museums in Florence | Condé Nast Traveler

"After a huge flood devastated the city of Florence in 1966, thousands of artworks were lost and damaged. Art historian Carlo Ludovico Ragghianti assembled a committee to raise worldwide public awareness and asked local and international artists to donate works to replace the ones that had been destroyed. More than 200 artists replied to the appeal and that's how Museo del Novecento was born. Dedicated to Italian art of the 20th and 21st centuries, today the museum houses more than 400 works, everything from painting to poetry." - Bridget Arsenault

Several temporary exhibits of the "site specific installation" type. If this isn't your thing, I would carefully check the temp exhibitions before you go. If your taste runs to more traditional art, you may be better off at the Museo del Novocento. My photos are of more traditional art, of which there isn't very much.

Museo del Novecento – Milan’s Modern Art Jewel 🇮🇹 Nestled in the Palazzo dell’Arengario beside the Duomo, the Museo del Novecento celebrates Italian 20th-century art in a beautifully curated, light-filled space . 🎨 Highlights: • Nearly 400 works, including masterpieces from Futurism (Balla, Boccioni, Severini), Arte Povera, and abstraction, plus international artists like Picasso and Kandinsky . • A dedicated Lucio Fontana room with immersive installations and stunning views over the Duomo . • The architectural setting is impressive: a soaring spiral ramp connects floors and open-air galleries, offering panoramic vistas . • A café/restaurant on the top floor provides excellent views—perfect for pausing between artworks (). 📝 Quick Notes: • Labels are generally clear, though non-Italian speakers may want more context . • During peak times, it can feel a bit crowded, especially on comfy spots (and the staff can seem overzealous about seating) . ⸻ ✅ Verdict (4.5/5) Museo del Novecento is an essential stop for lovers of modern art and architecture. It delivers a well-balanced mix of Italian avant-garde and international pieces, all framed by stunning design and Duomo views. Slight crowding and occasional staff strain are minor in an otherwise superb experience. Perfect for: • Art enthusiasts diving into 20th-century movements • Architecture fans drawn to its elegant spiral layout • Visitors wanting a cultural lift with scenic appeal Definitely worth visiting—especially for its curated collection and Milanese backdrop!

Opened in 2014, the Museo Novecento is a modern art museum housed in the former Ospedale di San Paolo, a 13th-century building known for its loggia designed by Michelozzo. The museum focuses on 20th- and 21st-century Italian contemporary art, with highlights including the Raccolta Alberto della Ragione collection and works donated by Ottone Rosai.

As a resident I feel I am lucky to be surrounded by Renaissance art every day of my life. Nevertheless Museo Novecento Is one of my favourite because in a Renaissance frame it hosts modern and contemporary artists and their works and the contrast is really enjoyable: little gems of contemporaneity which also has an impact on our hearts.

beautiful view and place, however i’m not very passionate about modern art, but overall it’s still interesting.

My favorite museum in Firenze… they are not afraid to push the boundaries of contemporary art.

I really enjoyed our visit to this museum - it was recommend to us by a local when we asked for a more quiet and less touristy museum. The exhibition by Haley Mellin was interesting and felt very relevant (with an eco-concious theme). The building is also really beautiful and wandering through the halls felt very calming. So if you want to skip the crowds, this museum is worth visiting (of course you have to check the current exhibitions).

Yelp
I feel like a child in this museum: a child nagged by governesses (gallery attendants), a child oppressed by the gravity of a space that doesn't merit it.

Yelp
My father and I decided to try to visit Museo Novecento for a nice afternoon while he was visiting me from the USA because I am studying in Florence for a year. I would love to say that the museum and its staff were lovely but that was not the case. My dad who is a physician has his vaccination record on two different cards because he forgot his card his second time. This has not been a problem for him using these two cards while ENTERING THE EUROPEAN UNION and entering several other museums and restaurants in Florence and Rome in the past week. Most importantly this proof of vaccination has been more than enough for him to keep his job as a life-saving frontline Covid DOCTOR at a hospital that requires vaccinated employees. The museum attendant said that he could not accept the card because he didn't like the way it was written. We both promptly left after this telling the attendant how can he enter Italy and not enter a small, modern art museum?! Since this museum doesn't accept fully vaccinated, masked patrons, they don't need to worry about accepting my money or my friends' money in the future. I have a popular travel blog and would have told others to visit the museum but now definitely not. 5 minutes later, we entered Santa Maria Novella with his CDC card with absolutely no problem. It is just stressful to not know which museums you can visit as a fully vaccinated visitor and which ones you can not even being fully vaccinated and complying with all the rules.
