The Museo de Arte Prehispánico Carlos Pellicer in Tepoztlán is a delightful surprise, showcasing a rich collection of archaeological artifacts. This museum houses over 1,000 pieces of pre-Hispanic art from various cultures, including Maya, Totonaca, Mexica, Teotihuacana, Zapoteca, and Olmeca. The collection was donated by the renowned Tabascan poet Carlos Pellicer Cámara.
Despite its modest size, the museum offers a diverse array of ceramics, stone carvings, and even a stone ring used in the ancient Mesoamerican ballgame. Notably, there are lively and vibrant human and animal figures, though the exhibits lack informative descriptions.
The museum is located behind the Dominican church in Tepoztlán. Admission is 15 pesos, payable in cash only. Given the limited number of attractions in the area, this museum is well worth a visit for those interested in pre-Hispanic cultures.
