These 11 Puppet Palaces Around the World Will Thrill and Terrify You

"Enter this grand old building, a convent built in the 1600s by permission of King John IV of Portugal, and slip behind the curtain into Lisbon’s only museum dedicated to the history of puppetry.  Visitors are transported across the world and throughout the ages while traversing this building’s dark corridors. The lights illuminate the tableaus of puppets, their expressions formed from every conceivable material. Even without puppeteers, they appear life-like, their faces full of action and intention. Along the way, pause at the theatre, as visitors can put on their own show. Move through to the end, and the curtain falls away. A courtyard awaits, filled with bright Lisbon light. It’s a great place to sit and come back to reality." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Titally in love with this exposition! It was the best way to leave Lisbon, I had a great time. Also, since I'm an animation student, it made the exposition 10x interesting.

I didn’t think that I will like it so much. It is a small but nice museum, where you can see characters from some movies, all the work behind the scenes. I was really impressed.

Excellent museum looking at the history of puppets across different regions of the world. It has some interesting displays showing the characters used in stop motion videos and the results that can be achieved. Well worth the visit.

Amazing, fascinating museum! Great place for all ages, we truly loved it! Puppets and masks are very interesting and well presented. Also, there is interactive bit to it - you can try to move the puppets, there are memory games and colouring. Exhibition of miniatures was fantastic!!! I think my both daughters liked it the most... 😀 we couldn't believe how precisely everything was done, every little detail... Don't hesitate to visit this museum, to us is one of the best in Lisbon!

Museum was closed for renovations but the exhibition on Laika Studios (Boxtrolls,Kubota and the two strings, etc) was excellent.

Pretty disappointed to find out that the museum was closed after walking halfway across Lisbon to make this our final destination for the day. Online and at location indicated the museum should be open.

Honestly one of the best museums I’ve been to. Actually interesting and fun and comical. There are several rooms with marionettes from all over the world, as well as some interactive exhibits. The gift shop is also wonderful.

Really fun museum collection of puppets, marionettes, and international masks. Especially good sections about traditional puppet theater in Portugal and Mali animal masks. Items are very well displayed. Our visit was less than an hour. Note that access from street level involves one flight of stairs outside and more than a flight inside. We felt like we were the only ones in the museum on a summer Saturday.

Yelp
More than just a place to take the kids. I really enjoyed the visit. Very few other visitors while I was there, practically had the entire place to myself. As you'd expect, this is a whimsical collection of puppets of every kind. A few dozen rooms where the puppets are sorted by categories such as Balinese shadow puppets, Indonesian masks, European political parodies, Theater puppets, stop motion movie puppets, etc... All displays have explanation posters in Portuguese and English. A few TV screens with video loops of the puppets in action. Small gift shop. Admission price is a mere 5 Euros. A slow walk through takes 75 minutes. I visited 5 museums during my stay in Lisbon, honestly this was my favorite.

Yelp
What a great, interesting and fun place! Beautiful marionettes and puppets, and very informative. I'm very happy to have found it, and spent an afternoon learning so much! Obrigado!!

Yelp
A really wonderful little museum with excellent puppets from all over the world incl. modern puppets by famous portuguese artists. Plus they have several sets used for shooting films: landscape or rooms with their "actors" and all the little details required to film a perfect illusion of reality. The museum also shows the completed films. Children can attend workshops to make their own puppets. The museum is located in walking distance to the Museu do Arte Antiga. All in all highly recommendable for young and old.
