The archaeology museum is housed in the former monastery church of Sant Pere de Galligants, but it is the original building which forms - in my view - the most interesting reason to visit.
The museum itself contains rather formal displays of the history of the area from prehistoric times onwards, but the Romanesque architecture of the church, and of the octagonal bell-tower and the cloister, with columns and pillars topped with capitals decorated with plants and scenes from the Gospels, in particular, are a delight: in fact, they are regarded as among the best examples of Romanesque architecture in Catalonia. The church also has a delightful setting, with squares and gardens on three sides.
Adjacent to the church, across the road at the west front, is the small but attractive Romanesque funerary chapel of Sant Nicolai, with a classic trefoil-plan apse. It was built at the same time as Sant Pere, and was originally part of the same complex.
