"Set in a tropical garden in the suburb of Fannie Bay, this superb museum and gallery is the best place to learn all about the art, history and culture of the Top End (the nickname for this northernmost section of the Northern Territory). The excellent collection of indigenous art includes both traditional and contemporary works. One gallery is devoted to the tragic events of Cyclone Tracy, the natural disaster of 1974; another covers the boats of the Pacific Islands. The museum's most popular exhibit may well be Sweetheart: the stuffed carcass of a five-meter (16-foot) male saltwater crocodile that once terrorized the billabongs (waterways) outside Darwin."

It's cute. You need to take the museum in context. It does an excellent job of telling the local story of Darwin, its history, people (in many ways the lack their of) and boats. I will say I appreciated the Aboriginal art here more than I have in other larger Australian museums. This isn't the Lourve. It doesn't claim to be. Excellent local flavor. Make the stop.

Wonderful museum to visit, which has a lot to tell about Darwin's history, from colonial to cyclone Tracy, and the rebuilt that came after. Many interactive exhibitions that made our visit felt very engaging. Would highly recommend.

The NT Museum and Art Gallery was a great collection of interesting exhibits and eye popping art. It’s not huge, it took just over an hour to get around. Well worth the effort and entry is free!

Modern, neat and tidy but a relatively small museum. Unfortunately the cyclone Tracey exhibit was closed due to renovations for the upcoming 50'th anniversary. As hard as I tried, I wasn't able to appreciate the art exhibits. The natural exhibit was good and there was an undercover but outdoor, small marine exhibit but given the temperature and humidity on the day, was unbearable to walk around. The museum entry was free, staff were very helpful and friendly and overall it was worth the visit.

I loved how organized this gallery and museum is, and everything is clearly marked and labeled, which provides an opportunity to learn more about each item. It is free to enter, but they do have a donation box and I highly recommend contributing to their efforts to maintain this fantastic instructional and informative gallery. I enjoyed learning about the Northern Territory and its history. The Cyclone exhibit was very informative. Loved the on-site gift shop! You cannot take a backpack inside, but they do offer a secure space for bags.

An outstanding experience and very informative displays. Gives a huge insight into Territorian life and culture. The display on Cyclone Tracey was superb and sobering. Definitely recommend on any visit to Darwin. Free entry and free parking. Also, the cafe is in a tranquil setting by the sea with water views.
