The special exhibition on Master IS is phenomenal. Being able to view these masterpieces closely is priceless. I only wish the included audioguide was in English to further augment the experience. The placards are translated which was greatly appreciated. The permanent collection is very good also with the amazing triptych by Lucas van Leyden from the Pieterskerk and Gerri Dou’s “The Astronomer” and many more. The collection deserves 5* the staff member at the ticket desk a 1*. I seemed to be a bother to him by asking about an audio tour. “There’s an app…” was all the information I received after paying my € 16. He did not tell me the special exhibition on audio was only in Dutch and I wasted a lot of time trying to access the information when I was in the exhibit. A little helpfulness and explanation goes a long way but that was not available at this desk. There are free lockers, a cafe and toilets.

An elegant art and history museum located in the heart of Leiden. It offers visitors a deep dive into local heritage, featuring impressive works by Dutch masters like Rembrandt.

Google
Some lovely medieval art, alongside showing the importance of the cloth industry for Leiden. And how the city ensured that the renowned quality of its cloth was maintained. Heres the Regents of an almshouse, in 1658, a similar picture in the Laken house shows the board responsible for checking the cloth quality. Also little models of a court deciding between two litigants.

A nice museum with very unfriendly staff. Many stunning images are on display from the fifteenth to sixteenth century. The building itself is very majestic.

If you want to enjoy a quiet and pleasant museum with beautiful paintings by the old Dutch masters (Rembrandt, Jan Steen, etc.) and many others, in the beautiful non-touristy city of Leiden, go and enjoy this museum. Take the train from Amsterdam (30) and walk to the museum. You can also enjoy a nice lunch in the museum. And wonder why everyone stays in overcrowded Amsterdam.

Museum De Lakenhal is featuring a wonderful contemporary unknown painter, only known by her/his initials I.S., who must be close to Rembrandt they reckon. Its a great exhibition, intertwined with others, very well done. The museum is even asking the public to find clues to solve this long-standing mystery. Fully recommended, alongside their great permanent collections!

Google
Terrific museum that tells the story of Leiden’s weaving and beer industries using industrial exhibits and fine art. Also numerous other interesting features like paintings from old masters and the interior of a hidden Catholic church to modern art. Can be seen thoroughly in 2-3 hours or breezed through in 1-2 hours. A fee applies.

Yelp
This is a lovely museum where we're currently viewing a special young Rembrandt exhibit. It's wonderful. I am also impressed that we are able to use a free locker (with key) to store our winter coats. Excellent museum option outside of Amsterdam's mad crush of tourists. Beware, their reader could not accept our US credit cards that work everywhere else across multiple countries. Clearly their POS software was setup wrong.

Yelp
an excellent collection of a detailed history of Leiden. Leiden has a rich and extensive history. There are many rooms that you walk into, mainly on the second floor that bring you several centuries back. If you don't know much about Leiden, by the time you are done with this museum, it will change. Leiden is quite special.

Yelp
Wonderful collection of paintings from outstanding Dutch painters- many from Leiden. I especially enjoyed the collection of the "finepainters". As Rembrandt's style got looser and looser, one of his students rebelled and got finer and finer- until you can't make out the brush strokes! Wonderful paintings- the use of light in them is marvelous. Really- I did marvel. I can't list all the paintings I loved here- there were just too many, but if you are in Leiden, and you like art- you WILL be glad you went here. It's free with the museum card, and the outstanding audio tour was free too. Love this place.
