This Charming European City Is Known for 'The Sound of Music' and Mozart — How to Visit

"An easy way to gain high-elevation views of the city via the Mönchsberg elevator, which leads to the Museum of Modern Art; Gerhard Reus recommends this alongside the funicular and walking routes up Mönchsberg or Kapuzinerberg to "grasp the beauty of Salzburg and its unique setting." - Lydia Mansel Lydia Mansel Lydia Mansel is a writer with more than eight years of experience editing and writing for both brands and online publications—with a particular focus on travel, fashion, and lifestyle. "Museum of Modern Art While the main attractions of Salzburg are undeniably linked to its baroque and medieval charms, the city is also home to 20th- and 21st-century art. Located atop the Mönchsberg—or Monk’s Mountain—and accessed via an elevator at Gstättengasse in the old town, the Museum der Moderne Salzburg showcases an eclectic mix of visual arts housed in a modern glass-and-marble structure with incredible views of the historic quarter and fortress. Though works by more-recognizable names like Emil Nolde and John Cage have been exhibited here, equally fascinating are the creations by lesser-known artists. A separate Museum der Moderne is located in the old town's Rupertinum building, with a collection focusing on graphic arts and photography."

I climbed the steps to land on top of the hill, behind the Museum of Modern Art. The cafe has patio seating. To the side is a viewing platform where folk take city view photos. To the left of that is a trail, walkway that goes down next to the cafe. There's glass doors. This is the entrance towards the reception. Enter and go downstairs. Or go into the cafe and walk downstairs. There's a room for assorted sized lockers. You will need either a 1 or 2 Euro coin. You will get it back. The exhibitions are mind opening and provide perspectives to ponder. Identity, humanity, the environment, where are we, what are our choices. It's stepping into a world expressed in a soul full, innate, artful manner. Walk away one step closer to feeling connected to messages that may just resonate. There's an easier way down, behind the art museum is a stairs into a garden that opens into a trail, sitting area to see the view and listen to church bells. Its a lovely walk down. Enjoy!

3 artists nicely displayed in a great building. Lots of places to sit and contemplate along the way. Everything in English and German. A nice looking restaurant with a great terrace and view. Theres a big uphill walk to get here FYI. Anyone reasonably fit wil be fine. I came up through the park and it was just beautiful and fantastic views along the way.

Museum der Moderne Salzburg Mönchsberg @ Salzburg 🖼️🇦🇹 📍 Mönchsberg, Salzburg Perched dramatically on the cliffs of Mönchsberg, the Museum der Moderne Salzburg is a striking modern building that contrasts beautifully with Salzburg’s historic Old Town below. Even if you don’t step inside, its location makes it a highlight along the Mönchsberg hiking route. I reached it while hiking down from Fortress Hohensalzburg, passing through Bürgerwehr and Schartentor. From the museum’s terrace, you get sweeping views over the city—perfect for panoramic shots before continuing toward Humboldtterrasse. The clean, contemporary architecture against the natural backdrop makes it a photogenic spot in its own right. Along this stretch of the trail, there were only a few locals enjoying the park, making it a peaceful moment to pause and take in the view before moving on. 🧭 Tip: If you have time, step inside for the rotating exhibitions of modern and contemporary art. Otherwise, the terrace alone is worth the stop for its vantage point over Salzburg.

There are so many amazing sites to visit in Salzburg. This museum is certainly worth a visit, but I think it should be included in a three-day or more visit to Salzburg. With less time, you might miss other more interesting sites like Helbrunn Palace or the fortress, as well as the many cathedrals and churches, not to mention, of course, the Old Town, Mirabel, and many others. If you're a fan of modern art, the this becomes a must-see on your first day.

Wonderful experience with amazing views over Salzburg. The exhibitions come in a variety of modes, with various styles, mediums and materials. Overall exquisite and quaint experience.

Google
What a find! You wouldn't know it was there from the outside, take the lift up to the top, and admire the incredible view over Salzburg. We sat in the restaurant for a couple of hours just taking in the vista. A choice of menus, anything from coffee and a pastry to a full meal and an alcoholic drink. The staff are so lovely and speak various languages. Definitely recommend and the art works were pretty good too.

Google
An incredibly cool and modern museum with so much to see that we couldn’t fit it all into our visit. The view from the top is absolutely stunning! The MönchsbergAufzug Lift, which is included in the Salzburg Card, is a fantastic option. Unfortunately, we only discovered it after walking up, but the walk was quick and easy. The only downside is the lockers requiring coins – a more modern solution would be great

Google
Art musuem with a view. Glad I get the Salzburg card for this, tbh not all the piece are great, but at the end, it’s personal preference, depends what you like.

Yelp
We walked the ridge trail from the Festung Hohensalzburg to the modern art museum and the views are except - from the river and city to the Alps. Try to arrive at the Art Museum overlook at 12:00 for the ringing of the church bells.

Yelp
My review is for the lift only. We used our Salzburg card and went for the wonderful view at the top. At the top, exit to the left for a free bathroom.

Yelp
Free with Salzburg card to enter the museum and take the elevator. We didn't look at any of the museum items and just went straight to the elevator because we knew there's a gorgeous view at the top terrace. Out of all the views in Salzburg, this one was by far the best. It keeps getting better and better. The first one was right outside the elevator. Then continue up the stairs and you come across this huge fortress wall. Walk all the way to the back and you'll see a huge grass area. Get close to the edge and you'll get a close up of the Hohensalzburg fortress then look below and you'll see Dom quarter and to the left you'll see the bridge that takes you over to Hotel Sacher and the magnolia trees blooming at the market plaza. Great place to relax and lots of locals walking their dogs. Also saw a food truck.

Yelp
The best part of the museum was the view. It is sheer minimalist space where all the work could've fit on half a floor. Most of the work was not inspiring and idiosyncratic. Considering the immense size, the curators should choose more diverse work Or simply more.More than half the exhibitions were in dark rooms. Even the staff were like zombies.

Yelp
Admission is included in the Salzburg card, I really didn't quite get the concept of this museum but I certainly enjoyed the view from the top! Upon arrival at the museum, you take an elevator. Also access to the restaurant side and Winkler terrace, (on the top of the Mönchsberg Cliffs, is near the short wall where the kids stood up as they sang at the movie.). The view of Salzburg from there is amazingly beautiful. While museum itself is for those who appreciate modern arts, this view from the terrace is a must for all especially those who loves the sound of the music.

Yelp
This beautiful museum on the hill is visible from near and far. It is worth the trip up. As we begin to wander, we notice the outdoor terrace with its view of the city. Of course we have to see and take a few pics. What isn't obvious, are the trails. As we are here to explore, it was time for another adventure. We proceed down a trail hoping to see the top of a stone tower pressed against the mountain. We have been speculating what it could be... water, pulley system, etc. A short way later we see the walled structure. It looks to be a ancient structure now used as a cafe and B&B. The view is spectacular. After our hike, it is back to the museum. This exhibition is based on female artists. A couple of names were familiar other not. In the end, we enjoyed the works as we wandered from room to room. This museum and surrounding area are worth the trip up the hill and are included in the Salzburg pass. Enjoy!

Yelp
This museum is really cool in the way that the main entrance is through the elevator that is inside of a cliff that starts on the bottom of the town and brings you to this museum on top of the monchberg! I used to live near here when I studied abroad and I passed by this place pretty often. Everything is super futuristic and modern here and even the restroom is kind of cool to look at!

Yelp
The Museum of Modern Art is situated on the edge of a sheer mountain top drop off and visible from almost all of Salzburg. It is a modern concrete structure right next to a very small medieval looking castle. They hold many events there, some with live classical music in a courtyard. They have a restaurant which we did not visit. The views from outside are spectacular and was what initially drew us in... We got great photos from the many vantage points at the top of the mountain... We entered the museum at no cost because of the "Salzburg Card" we previously purchased which includes all museum entry fees beyond the free public transportation which is also included. The art was moving and inspiring. There are several floors, all reachable by stairs or elevator. We ended up walking down a hiking trail to another mountain top vantage point which turned out to have an ancient castle wall with a built in hostel.

Yelp
First off you take a very austere elevator up three floors to the museum entrance. Free lockers for your bags, jackets etc. Museum building fantastic. Current collection good. But the real nice part begins with the terrace view of the city, wonderful forest hikes behind the building- make your way to the left, through the fortress arch and make your way to the Hohensalzburg Fortress. Great walk!

Yelp
I decided to check out both the MdM museums in Salzburg, as they're covered in the ever handy "Salzburg Card." My expectations were pretty low; "modern museums" in small(ish) towns are often pretty disappointing. But I have to say, I was blown away by the level of sophistication at the Moenchsberg location. Both the selection and presentation were excellent. (On the other hand, I'd probably have to give a "pass" to the Rupertinum location, at least with current exhibition.)

Yelp
Unfortunately we went here after dark, so missing the spectacular views. The museum perches on the cliff tops overlooking salzburg, and is accessible by a lift (you could also get the cable car to the castle, then walk along.) The lift closes after a certain time so you can get stuck. There is a very trendy bar/restaurant which was a little too pricey for us. The art is all superb, much better than the intellectually void stuff we get produced in London. At the time i went there was a vast exhibition by a bloke who'd simply filled canvas after canvas with tiny numbers. Quite mental. Vast abstract canvases in what can only be described as a well educated Bond villain's lair. Also very impressive Muslim video installations, male and female videos facing each other across a vast space, a woman getting chased through the streets and scenes inside a unisex baths. Get a Salzburg card and see it for nowt. (one trip only)
