One of the most interesting museums in Hamburg. I liked especially the old musical instruments, the old piano collection is really amazing. They have a section dedicated to old fashion, where you can see cloths from different stages of history. Also they have a huge and really outstanding scale model of railways net, with trains driving through the stations, working traffic signals and more. Another section is dedicated to the Hamburg's development throughout history. A section is dedicated to Jews community in Hamburg, starting from the old times, the diverse community life and the activities of Jewish people. In this section is a hall arranged as a synagogue. If you are interested in this type of museum and want to visit it at your own pace, reserve for it about 3 hours.

This museum is really impressive! We didn't know what to do on a Sunday and, after reading the Google reviews, we decided to go, and we don't regret it a single second. The museum is cheap for its content. It has 3 floors full of history. They mix text, sound, images and they even have a super amazing train construction in the top floor, with a very detailed experience of how the trains were +40 years ago. Texts are all in German but most of them also have English translation. Though all of them should be translated, at the same time I didn't feel the need of more translations. Staff are very sympathetic though they almost don't understand English. They do try to help you, besides. There is a library a bit hidden right on the side when entering the museum building. The library is small but has paintings, ancient books of the History of Hamburg and remains with the same style. Definitely a place I want to go again in few years.

There's an incredible amount of information and artefacts at this museum. Too much in fact! They also have a huge miniature train set that is operated and described (in German) for 30 mins on a nearly hourly basis. Fun for kids.

Really interesting. The descriptions of items exist both in English and German. Plenty of huge models of ships and landscapes as well as large installations that put you inside ships etc. Would recommend for all +12 years if you want an lively and (at places) interactive insight into Hamburg’s past and present.

I’d have loved to be able to understand more of the Jews in Hamburg exhibit though they did try to put some details. Many items looked interesting but I had no idea what they were! Other floors had more information but any special exhibits are exclusively in German. Would recommend getting the Hamburg card for cheaper entry (also covers public transport and other sites but if a student then check first how much you’d actually save on entry more than student discount).

Wonderful museum with great exhibitions displaying the long history of Hamburg. Could have spent hours more there. Only slightly lacking in 20th century - and particularly WWII - history, but earlier periods exquisitely covered. Model railway on 2nd floor probably mainly interesting to enthusiasts.

The main displays of this museum are currently closed for a major renovation There are two special exhibitions which can be visited - one called Hamburg 1923 which covers the political unrest in the city at that time, specifically the measures taken to halt the rise of Communism and the right wing movements which sowed the seeds of Nazism. The other exhibition covers graffiti and street art in the city in the 1990s, concurrent with the hip hop scene. There is a pleasant café, and some exhibits about the ongoing restoration, however I would only recommend visiting now if you want to see these specific exhibitions.

An interesting museum, providing insight into the history of Hamburg. Can get discounts via the hamburg card. Most of the information was in English, which was most appreciated. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Yelp
I have been to Hamburg so many times that I thought I knew the city. Apparently, I can't be further away from being wrong. This museum - that is located on beautiful park with idyllic lake teaches you all about Hamburg and its history. It's located not far from U-bahn stop St. Pauli, so it can't get any easier than that, not to mention it's not far should you be interested to check out all the "interesting" entertainment on the infamous Reeperbahn. Again, dragged by my history and museum geek boyfriend, I came here by force (if not by free will) although I wasn't literally kicking and screaming. If it were up to me, I'd rather spend my time at Monckebergstrasse, but oh well - I guess a little history won't hurt. This museum has very interesting models of pretty much everything in Hamburg. At least you won't be bored by history by looking at interesting teeny weeny intricate models. It taught you what Hamburg really was back then when some Christian missionaries (and bishops) chose to settle here and named the town Hammaburg. It's almost like reading it on wikipedia, but with a lot of cute models. See? not boring. The layout of the museum was cool too and they had a room full of model ships just like in Copenhagen's Orlogsmuseet, and the most cool about this museum is that on the top floor, they have a working railway model of Hamburg in the scale of 1:32. That was amazing to watch. They did have people operating the trains and all. I felt like I went back to my childhood again. On the basement floor they had small exhibition of what Hamburg was like under Nazi reign, along with recreation of shops, places under World War II. Very interesting. All in all, a very interesting place to visit, especially if you're interested about history. ...and oh, did you know that Reeperbahn literally means the rope way? It's where back in the yore they made ropes for the ships. See? More knowledge of history here! I'm getting like 1% smarter than before... :P

Yelp
The museum itself is a nice museum with a lot of interesting things, but after seeing the miniature wonderland and the maritime museum, I had more than enough miniature buildings and boats. Only was able to stay 15 minutes before I couldn't take anymore of it.

Yelp
Price is a little steep at 9 euro but it does provide for a couple hours of an iinteresting audio guided tour of Hamburg history in your language. Start on the middle floor and turn left after going up the first flight of stairs. This will start you at the beginning of Hamburg and will then take you around up until around 1900. The 20th century is on the lower floor and the period of world war 2 is somewhat hidden below that. (That area in particular needs narration and better information on Hamburg's history during that time).
