"Celebrate the Arts as an Expression of Love Arts in Puerto Rico range from lavish recitals to paintings of humble local scenes. The Luis A. Ferré Fine Arts Center in San Juan puts on various performances, including theater, concerts, ballet, and opera. The center itself is a work of art, with a vibrantly-colored mural of the Muses, and a stained-glass window symbolizing the elements of nature. Meanwhile, the neoclassical Puerto Rico Museum of Art showcases visual art pieces from the 17th century onwards. Its collections feature a linoleum portrayal of a girl gathering food, and a collage in oil that depicts two faces of the famous Puerto Rican poet Julia de Burgos."

15 Best Things to Do in Puerto Rico | Condé Nast Traveler

"Once a hospital, the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico was restored and given new life in 1995. The grand building houses the work of the island's artists dating from the 17th century to the present day. The museum, located in the Santurce neighborhood, is a San Juan institution. The permanent collection includes more than 1,000 works ranging from painting to sculpture to installations. Rotating exhibitions, often with a political undercurrent, are part of the appeal. The exchange project Repatriation , for example, showcased the work of Puerto Rican artists living in Chicago ." - Alicia Kennedy

My husband and I spent a little over 2 and half hours. The different exhibits to see and information on them written in Spanish and English. If you pay the extra $3 you can see the special exhibits they also have going on. Plus, they have the beautiful botinical garden in the back of the building with a great walking path to see everything. They also have sculptures too.

Google
I'm so glad we visited here. It was so peaceful and relaxing. We really enjoyed wandering around and visiting all the exhibits. I definitely recommend getting the upgraded tickets because we had access to all 4 floors. The gardens are lovely as well. Definitely add this to your trip to San Juan.

Google
Beautiful museum. It is very nice to learn more about Puerto Rican culture through this museum. The outside was very nice and relaxing too.

Google
I really recommend this for art lovers. This is an excellent exhibition with very interesting artists. It also has a library, a park with statues, activity rooms and more. See some photos I attach.

Google
Important cultural institution. It has one of the most incredible gardens I have ever seen and an exceptional art collection that narrates you through the amazing history of Puerto Rican artists. It goes without saying that this is a must while visiting San Juan.

Google
What a wonderful place to learn about Puerto Rican art and history. Staff are super friendly and knowledgable (especially Jose who was incredible!) and you can spend hours there exploring and learning. And don’t forget the beautiful garden!

Google
We went on a Thursday which was free after 5pm. We arrived a little before 5 so we strolled the gardens for free before we came into the museum. I highly recommend doing it this way. Gardens were very pretty. It was not crowded at the time we went, which was nice. There was one floor closed when we went but there were still lots of beautiful and interesting displays and exhibits. Inspiring art!

Google
Our trip to el museo was very pleasant with the staff being very helpful to us in many regards. The exhibits were interesting but many lacked thorough descriptions to help us fully understand them The koi pond behind the museum was also nice. It was sad though that the gift shop was closed :)

Yelp
Gorgeous building and architecture. The art pieces were beautifully curated and thought-provoking. Loved how interactive some of the art installments were! My only quip was that they didn't sell a lot of prints, wish I could have taken some of the majesty home with us! An awesome visit if you are in town. Well worth the hour or two to peruse.
google avatar

Chinita B.

Yelp
If I could give negative reviews I would. We were being followed the whole time as tourist. We were yelled at by security to get away from the art when we were standing feet away from it. After the incident we were followed the whole way so we left immediately after paying $50 fee for my friend and I. We will never come back again and we didn't get to finish our tour. Don't come here as a tourist because you will get judged immediately.

Yelp
One of the best museums I have visited so far. Every-time I visit a new place I leave one day to visit a museum & Botanical garden. This is the best way to learn about a new place, their culture, history & I love this part of my trip the most. Lots of people made fun of me when they heard I visited the art museum in Puerto Rico! But every person has their likes & dislikes! I can get lost in that museum for ever, was there for more then 2 hours. If my legs weren't in pain I would just revisit the floors again lol. What a pleasant visit to this beautiful art museum with some brilliant people's work. I think this is the place where I took most of my pictures while traveling in San Juan. If you like Art then this is place you must visit . I paid 12$ for an adult ticket, they also have paid parking. I also paid extra for a special experience they were showing & it was soo worth it ! I just don't remember how much I paid extraAnd there is a beautiful garden inside that I really wanna see in spring or summer .

Yelp
In Puerto Rico on vacation, this museum is located walkable from Old San Juan where we stayed and free! Small with two galleries open on our visit. We were pleased with the Goya/ Salvador Dali show. Relatively busy and did I say free?! Across the street from beautiful views and parks near the ocean. A nice courtyard in center of museum. When I travel, I always like to do a couple of cultural things. Here was a win!
google avatar

Ruthie P.

Yelp
If you are visiting San Juan, definitely stop by. Art lovers or just to get new experience, you will like it. So many art to see and different things to explore. Takes 2-3 hours to not be rushed.
google avatar

Yelp
Great museum with reasonable entry prices! Loved this museum! Highly recommend seeing all of the additional exhibits available for the extra cost on top of general admission. We spent a couple of hours in here admiring the art and learning more about Puerto Rico. The museum itself was easy to find, clean and the staff was helpful.
google avatar

Nafisa H.

Yelp
Easily the best museum we had a chance to visit while in Puerto Rico. There is paid parking to the left of museum which was about $1.50/ hour. When we came Thursday afternoon tickets were free. Price for the entire museum, special exhibits, and garden is normally $13. Wide collection of art, paintings, sculptures, and video. Pieces included both contemporary and historic Puerto Rican art. Often they would come over and ask if I had any questions about the art and offer any background information. Beautiful museum with so many amazing pieces. The garden is also just behind the museum and was super peaceful. Definitely a must visit!
google avatar

Kim B.

Yelp
Great museum! Only issue is some exhibits are a premium on top of the regular pricing. Be sure to visit the garden on the second floor! Beautiful Koi fish there.

Yelp
Eat a healthy breakfast and plan to spend at least 4 hours taking in all the displays. I almost never visit a city without checking out both their contemporary museum and musuem of art. Especially in a different country, this gives me a good idea of what they value and hold to be important artifacts of that culture. This was a great experience to learn more about the movements that have revolutionized societies and sects of people in PR over the years. The museum is multi leveled with 3 floors, each wing dedicated to a different type of art or a different movement. General entry of $5 gives you access to all 3 except for an exhibit on the 3 floor. There are student discounts available. Masks are required through the duration of your stay. I spent about 4-5 hours in the earlier half of the day roaming the floors and getting lost in time. Most exhibits are displayed in English and the few that are in Spanish have translation devices available. The space is well maintained with guards, staff and volunteers throughout to protect the space/ art. Per usual no eating is allowed but they do have an open space on the lower level where you can drink water from a fountain and grab a snack from vending machines. A few blocks away they have some of the best taquerias and bars on a strip if you get hungry. You are allowed to leave and return using the bracelet which grants access from open to close. I had a great time learning about the people and culture of PR. This actually inspired me to visit other local museums to connect some dots. You can't lose spending time here and leaning into the culture.

Yelp
As it may be good to visit it is very bad to work in. I feel like they do not represent their vision and mision. As they offer oportunity yo grow, if the management does not like you they will get rid of you with no justifiable reason. I highly suggest an ambience investigation on all the departments and for hr to take employee reports more serious. Is not normal in a very short period in less than a year, people have been quiting or fired from the same department.

Yelp
Doesn't say closed on its website I planned a day trip to bayamon both museos closed wtf , with no warning on the website guess another beach so disappointed , I love art and was excited, my advice call first don't follow the website, it was no help at all The city of Bayamón wants more people to visit it but what's the point if two of your main attractions are closed with no warning whatsoever

Yelp
I enjoyed this museum. It had a variety of local and international artist on display. Admission is 6 dollars. I believe at certain times of day it's free. We met a very knowledgeable women working there who helped us navigate the city.

Yelp
This was a very nice art museum with plenty of parking available. The art was a combination of complete beauty with some quirkiness. I found everything to be quite intriguing, and a lot of it had a lot of stories and history. The admission fee is very reasonable, and you receive a bracelet so that you can go to the different sections of the gallery. I've always had a thing for art, and I found this museum to be quite interesting. Everything was written in spanish, but they have several staff members throughout the gallery that would explain and go over any questions that you might have. There was a wedding going on in the back Which is also a garden. You can see the fish there. The wedding reception was held indoors, so there was even more to see other than the fine art. I highly recommend stopping through if you're into art and sculptures. You won't be disappointed.

Yelp
This medium sized art museum, which has been open since 2000, includes a nice collection of Puerto Rican art. One highlight is the outdoor sculpture garden which has a reflection pool with koi fish. I would plan for 2 hours if you like to browse exhibits - maybe 3 hours if you read every description in detail. The museum is a great option on a rainy day, or a mid-afternoon stop to enjoy air-conditioning on a hot afternoon. The permanent collection is an eclectic mix of portraits, sculptures, and modern works (digital art) on three floors. The museum provides a clear overview of the island's history, including its massive diaspora, and longing for independence (from Spain and now, the United States). On the plus side, it's relatively inexpensive ($7 for adults, $4 for children) and has a lovely outdoor sculpture garden that is well worth a visit. On the minus side, the museum's parking garage is hidden - but you can stop by a garage further down the street. Also, the museum could improve by providing a map and description of highlights on paper (in English).
google avatar

Amber N.

Yelp
Very simple check in process. The museum layout is easy to navigate. One of the employees (I'm sorry I didn't get his name) was incredibly kind and helpful. He told me some interesting information about the art, stuff that I wouldn't have known on my own. I appreciated that he took the time to share his knowledge with me. I really enjoyed my time here. The cost is very reasonable.
google avatar

Yelp
Caution: the opening hours are incorrect online. They kick you out at 4:45 - and they are very rude about it!

Yelp
My favorite thing to do whenever I visit a new city (other than eat delicious food) is to learn more about it by visiting one of their museums. The Museo de Arte was a wonderful way to escape some of the summer heat, and the staff couldn't have been more informative or helpful! I really enjoyed learning more about the history of Puerto Rico thru its artists, and I loved the layout of the museum itself. Every docent we passed was so excited to tell us more about different artists and exhibits, and you could just feel their passion in the way they talked about different aspects of the art on display. My favorite part was the outdoor section out back with a nice little mostly shaded walking trail with cool installations and water features as well. It felt like a hidden oasis in the midst of the city. We spent a good amount of time at the museum, and I still feel like we barely made a dent in reading and exploring everything. I hope that the museum was untouched and protected from the devastation of Hurricane Fiona, because it would be a tragedy to lose such a wonderful cultural institution.
google avatar

Yelp
Through art, you can really understand the culture so I always try to go to an art museum whenever I travel to a new place. I absolutely loved this one! For only $6 admission, you get to see the permanent collection of Puerto Rican art (levels 2, 3 and 4) that were filled with a great mixture of modern and classical artists and styles. You could pay more to see the other levels which were European and a lawyer's collection, but opted not to. I really appreciated the art here and glad I chose this one. Spent about 2 hours there. There is a garden too. There is parking on the premise which may be free but we didn't see it so we just parked and paid at a nearby parking lot. Highly recommend this museo!

Yelp
Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico is a lovely museum featuring fine artists from Puerto Rico. Guests can visit the permanent collection, which includes a sculpture garden, and the temporary exhibition. I enjoyed the exhibits, many of which were interactive, and evoke a myriad of emotions. The museum is also a nice air conditioned respite from the heat outside. Most of the exhibit descriptions are written in both Spanish and English, and there are staff members nearby willing to explain the pieces and provide additional context.
google avatar

Kristen S.

Yelp
Really fantastic collection of art. Pretty much all the descriptions were offered in both English and Spanish. We went after my husband got off work one Thursday, since that is their later night. We could have easily stayed another hour until they closed if I had worn better shoes and we weren't getting so hungry. As it was we were able to see about half to two thirds of the museum at my "I want to read all the things" pace in the two hours we were there. I would gladly go back. It was like water for my art parched soul.
google avatar

German D.

Yelp
Really really fabulous museum. Excellent permanent collection that does a great job tracing Puerto Rican history through art. Extremely moving and interesting. The botanical garden is a nice additional touch! Highly recommend, especially during the heat of the day as an A+ indoor activity.
google avatar

Irene C.

Yelp
Great museum! Very physically accessible, very helpful staff! They have good exhibits of visual art from across the centuries, as well as a jointly coordinated exhibit with the Art Museum of Ponce, which is currently being renovated. The art work itself is striking and evocative, and the displays contextualize it well. Recommended.

Yelp
Unique works of Art to appreciate . However Absolutely no signs ! Where are the street signs leading to the direction of the Museum which led us to first park in the employee parking lot until we were advised to leave. Upon walking in the museum 3 workers stopped and stared at us and used hand signals to indicate mask wearing although there were No signs advising of this; no one greeted the group; talk about awkward!!! Upon leaving the museum used the parking ticket provided during entry . While scanning the ticket, the parking attendant advised we could not exit the museum lot because the ticket scanned wasn't paid for . Asked the parking attendant where the signs were indicating Payment for for parking had to be done prior to leaving ; the parking attendant advised there were no signs. To exit the location; backed up the vehicle , double parked, paid at the machine and credit cards are the only form of payment accepted. What a mess!

Yelp
A beautiful space with hip, clean look, and a joy to be inside of. Outside, the garden is very cool, but needs to be worked on a bit as it is still a bit ratty after the hurricane.
google avatar

Ellie B.

Yelp
I liked everything about this museum. The staff was very friendly and the grounds were gorgeous. I thought that the curators spent a great deal of thought and attention on the signage and information and I learned a lot from my visit. The contemporary art collection is world class.
google avatar

Alfie S.

Yelp
Coming to this museum was one of the best parts of my trip to Puerto Rico. Admission was very inexpensive, and there was a ton to see! Four floors made it a little overwhelming, but the staff was extremely helpful (and not intrusive). We got to see and learn about a lot of the history surrounding Puerto Rico, which we lack back home. The permanent exhibits were gorgeous and eye-opening, allowing you to truly see and feel about the plight of the artists and get more accustomed to the culture. The two temporary visits were breathtaking and conversation inspiring. We saw an exhibit surrounding hate speech and modern urban art, both of which I still think of. Finally, we ended our visit while walking through their acres of park space surrounding the museum. There's something incredibly serene about nature surrounded by harsh urbanism. Whether you're a local or a tourist, this should be a necessary stop. Yes, it's outside of Old San Juan but don't worry - You'll be safe! Make it a point to go to support the arts and learn more about the place you're visiting.
google avatar

Em M.

Yelp
Beautiful art! Very cheap to enter! I was sad that not all the exhibits were available, but everything we did see was beautiful. The courtyard in the back is also amazing! Definitely something to check out!
google avatar

Yelp
Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico is a fantastic art museum showcasing paintings and sculptures from Puerto Rican artists. The museum is medium-sized, with a number of exhibition halls, and it focuses mostly on contemporary and near-contemporary artists. Many of the pieces explore Puerto Rican culture and identity, as well as the evolution of society on the island. There's also an outdoor sculpture garden, which is great for a daytime stroll during nice weather. Overall a fun visit perfect for any art connoisseur.
google avatar

Kera D.

Yelp
I am a he fan of great art and this place is a beauty! They offer tours daily and we went on a Sunday. The price to visit the museum is $7 unless you have your college ID and we did so it was $3. Which was a great deal for this visit. We started off on the tour and I eventually strayed away because I was getting a headache from how lengthy it was. After going off on my own there were guides along the way to assist with articles in the museum. They not only provided assistance and information on the paintings and art they had booklets to assist with the pieces as well. I enjoyed this museum and if you are an art person such as myself you will love it. My favorite part was the outdoor garden and it was beautiful. They had tropical fish and amazing greenery. If you have children they also have a children's museum downstairs to entertain the children. This place has something for everyone and is affordable and friendly.

Yelp
Wonderful exhibit of art. 3 floors and outside botanical garden. Friendly staff and super sparkling clean. Wednesday is free Admission. We went Saturday and paid 13 $ for 2 adults. Wonderful price
google avatar

Jenny S.

Yelp
One of the best art museum experiences I have had in a while! Instantly after entering, the workers were very enthusiastic and informative about the art. They paid close attention to the way we observed the art and made sure to suggest other art pieces. All of the workers ensured we understood who the artists were, what influence they had in art and their achievements. They went the extra mile to tell us about nearby restaurants when we wanted to take a break and once we returned they helped us continue from where we left off. Each art room contains a description of what to expect within the space which helps anyone who is not as familiar with art, to better understand its significance to Puerto Rico. It's kind of long but very entertaining, I would suggest to dress comfortably and plan on spending at least 3-5 hours.
google avatar

Karen J.

Yelp
When in Puerto Rico always expect rain showers... While our stay at Double Tree hotel... We realized It was walking distance (2 blocks) to this very nice Museum... Which was perfect, my daughter & I enjoyed it very much... So if in the San Juan area make sure to stop by this place...
google avatar

Adam H.

Yelp
Excellent sample of Puerto Ricos pride in culture. Be sure to wear comfortable foot wear. Grab a map and plan out your visit this way you will see everything.
google avatar

Yelp
I really enjoyed my visit to this museum while in San Juan. They had great installations - I especially enjoyed the contemporary Puerto Rican art. The outdoor sculpture garden is also gorgeous. It's a really nice walk but it can be hot out there (which I think is why I enjoyed it pretty much with no one else around.) A couple of bummers - they have a no photo policy for most installations (museums really need to get with it on this issue, it's not smart in this day and age). Also, the restaurant (which is highly rated) is closed on Sundays. Highly recommended for art fans and those wanting a little insight on Puerto Rican culture.

Yolanda F.

Yelp
Super cool place to spend a few hours! As soon as I walked in i was greeted kindly by the front desk staff. Everyone I interacted with was helpful and friendly! For the low cost it's definitely worth it. So much cool art here and history. Loved the garden and how much art there actually was out there! Took full advantage of the photo ops out there! Cool spot to just relax with your significant other!
google avatar

Wanda N.

Yelp
It was our first day in PR and we had already done the Bacardi tour. We had a 5 AM flight so needless to say I was exhausted. Wish I had more time and energy to fully appreciate and explore this cultural gem. Walked into a talk and demonstration about Plena which fascinated us. The garden in the back with the koi pond was so relaxing. I almost fell asleep!
google avatar

Amanda C.

Yelp
Beautiful and inclusive collection of art. Lots of different styles and very enjoyable. Small enough to see in a day(few hours) and the garden in the back is lovely.
google avatar

Annie T.

Yelp
Very modern decor. Small local collections. Helpful floor. I loved the exhibit on the 4th floor showing a glimpse in the life of a barber shop.
google avatar

Aria D.

Yelp
This museum is wonderful, such a lovely example of works and history and an amazing sculpture garden behind. All the staff was so helpful and wonderful. We were there when there was a show from artists who had moved to Chicago from Puerto Rico, it was one of the best shows I've seen.

Kaitlynn O.

Yelp
There was so much to look at! One of the staff members was especially helpful (and enthusiastic!) when explaining pieces of art and featured exhibits. I am glad that I visited this museum.
google avatar

Awilda A.

Yelp
Great way to learn about PR and their evolution into the states. The garden was the prettiest and I learned slot about the vegetation. Great experience at a good price. Would go back.
google avatar

Kimberly C.

Yelp
A great, well-put together museum with interesting exhibits. They really had a beautiful display of Puerto Rican art that made visitors appreciate culture, society, and PR's history. Plus entrance fee is very low - a must-see in San Juan!

Yelp
Here's my review to the museum and not talk about any of the paintings at all. My sister got married here and what a fantastic wedding!! The ceremony took place outside in their patio and the receptions was inside the museums main hall. With the perfect decorations from a hired decorator and perfect arrangement from the wedding planner, the museum definitely gave it that high-rich class feeling that a princess was getting married. The fact that everything was done at the museum was not only a great idea, but convenient in many ways. Since they have a restaurant, the food came from there and OMG!!! Try the Pork filled with Amarillitos and mashed potatoes. GENIUS CHEF! ...Back to the review. The staff/servants are 100% happy and are there for you. The entrance from the patio is simply beautiful, the patio is amazing, especially the tree to the far right, and the hall is tall and glamours. 2 helpful things. 1) Valet parking out back, the black street on the left or in-front after getting back in the car is NOT a street. It's a pond. (I did see a car drive into it). and 2. Have that Pork Filled Amarrillitos plate. OMG!!!!! I loved everything about this museum, but I can't talk about the arts... oops! Parking is fair, and location is close for locals and tourist.
google avatar

Yelp
Within walking distance from the Doubletree. Super suprised and what a great museum we found. Like visiting a small museum in NYC. It is very cool inside with a/c and beautiful marble interiors. Cute little gift shop. The permanent collection was being remodeled until end of June 12, but we were able to see three exhibits which took about 3 hours to view. Campeche exhibit interesting historical painter from San Juan very educational exhibit. Smaller PR contemporary artist exhibit. And nice Spanish collection of modern design. Certainly a great indoors activity.
google avatar

Jerry T.

Yelp
Where to begin?... The location, the architecture, the fees (no MoMA prices here), the art! From paintings of the 17th century to modern large scale sculptures and photography, there is not one thing you will not enjoy on your visit to this citadel of great art! And as i stated elsewhere, save some appetite to rejoice with the gastronomic offerings of the Laurel Kitchen Art/Bar. ¡Buen provecho!
google avatar

Cherise N.

Yelp
This place is a good place to start in terms of learning the Puerto Rican culture. You are greeted by a giant "wild thing" figure that is crushing a car. Creepy & exciting at the same time. You have to purchase your ticket at the gift shop, we paid about $13.50 for 2 adult tickets. You are not allowed to take pictures inside the museum, with the exception of the outdoor sculpture area (access through the second floor). There are five floors with four of them containing a variety artwork, each floor with a theme. My favorite floor was the third floor. The artwork on the third floor was informative of the warier art eras in PR, although there was not any art work from precolonial times. I would have loved to see that. The first floor was actually the most impressive floor because it contains artwork from students from various schools (it changes periodically). The Escuela Especializada de Bellas Artes Pablo Casals (grades 9-12) was the school that we saw. When I say THESE STUDENTS ARE TALENTED, I am not lying! Their are pieces were amazing. Come here and have your eyes thank you for such gifts!
google avatar

Jill U.

Yelp
The collection of art is a wonderful historic representation of Puerto Rico, (although no prehistoric/pre-Columbian.) I like be the art scene in San Juan, it has so much talent and energy. We learned so much about the history of Puerto Rico, not only because the exhibits are so interactive and explanatory, but the docents really bring everything alive for you. They explained what was going on politically and culturally at the time, and compared works and explained the ideas and intentions of the artists. Everyone here likes talking about art and it gave us such a better appreciation for what we were looking at. Then we took a leisurely stroll through the garden. Um, just go. You will really enjoy the whole experience. The Laurel Restaurant is no longer here though. So we hoofed it up to Libros for a late lunch.....
google avatar

Natasha M.

Yelp
I really enjoyed my visit. The employees at the museum were super nice! I would just be observing pieces and they would walk up to me and tell me the story behind the art, it was great! The collection is small so come with an open mind and be ready to learn about PR!
google avatar

Charly K.

Yelp
I would definitely make this an agenda item for any San Juan adventure. The painting is OF Borges though, not BY him!
google avatar

Christopher T.

Yelp
Loved this place, as a Smithsonian employee I was jealous of their building and grounds, better than anything we have. They have Koi, I even have a picture of them in my profile. The art was well above average and the place in general was just such a treat and blew away my expectations. Kind of the weird middle ground between Old San Juan and the hotel zone but worth a visit. Save time for the beautifully manicured grounds out back.
