10 Best Museums in Bangkok

"The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) is a five-story museum with more than 800 works. The stark, modern building was created to look as though it was carved from one piece of granite; cascading jasmine designs on either side project natural light onto the atrium floor inside. There are several floors of permanent exhibits, plus seasonal shows (including, most recently, the elephant-focused "Legend"). The art isn't packed in, and there's plenty of room to admire one piece at a time." - Katie Lockhart

What a great art museum! Not huge, but a well-curated collection with diverse themes and mediums. Spent a very enjoyable 2 hours here. The works by Thai artists in particular was very impressive - my mind was just blown away by the creativity and imagination on display, as well as the incredible technical skill and talent. Not forgetting the architecture and decor of the museum itself. Highly recommend!! When I left the museum cafe was doing a bustling business - I didn't stop for lunch but the food looked great.

The museum itself is great, five stars. But it's staff is ridiculously rude!!! It's very, very unusual for Thailand. It's nonsense! Dear MOCA, you should teach your staff to behave or just to hire any other smiling and welcoming local people. First of all, they didn't let my wife to go inside with a small bag. Ok, it's fine, but there many other people with small bags. They forced us to leave at the entrance our small capybara toy. Whaaaat? They said that people can't go with dolls inside. Whaaaat? Strange rule. And it's not a doll. Staff in the exhibition rooms were nearly sleeping. Literally speaking. Only one guy in the room with "Chinese Dali" was really kind and professional. (This guy and the security guy at the entrance were the only kind persons here). In the cafeteria, we ordered two drinks and two french fries. At any other place in Thailand, you can get a proper meal in 5, max. 10 minutes. Here, we waited for fries 20 minutes. Really!!! I asked few times and every time they told that it will be ready soon. Leaving the museum, once again we met really rude and impolite behaviour. MOCA, do something with it. Your stuff is ruining the whole experience. How did you find these rude people in the country of smiling and beautiful Thai people?

An impressive museum with beautiful hand painted pictures. I was fascinated by the colours and details of each painting. The history and description behind of each art was great. Loved the air-conditioned, calm and quite place. Last level with modern art was very uninteresting. A tiny bit far away from the city centre but recommendable!

I almost missed this place, and I’m so glad I took the time to search for more spots to visit during my stay in Bangkok. The art collection is truly a blessing to the eyes—it made me think, “This art absolutely belongs in a gallery, to be seen and acknowledged by many.” The layout and presentation were beautifully done—kudos to the interior designers. It wasn’t too crowded either, which made the whole experience even more enjoyable. I left feeling inspired and happy I made the visit. My favorite artist among all who really left an impression on me was Prayom Yoddee. I wish I could see more of his paintings—and hopefully, he reads this review, hehe. Unfortunately, there were a few paintings without credits or titles displayed, which was a bit sad. I hope the team sees this review and takes a moment to double-check, because it’s such a shame to have beautiful, inspiring art go unacknowledged. 😔 I’ll definitely come back if I’m ever in Bangkok again 🥰

I visited MOCA Bangkok with my family for a relaxed day out at an art gallery. It is a little far from the city centre but well worth it if you can fit it into your itinerary. There’s a very generous (60%) discount for local and international students as well. The collection includes sculptures, paintings and photographs by Thai and international artists, with each floor featuring a unique theme. I particularly enjoyed the exhibition of Thawan Duchanee’s works, the western-themed “Richard Green” room on the 5th floor, and the mask collection (among others!). The exhibition did a great job showcasing the common heritage of Indian and Southeast Asian art. I was also impressed by the attention to detail. Even the chairs have unique and charming designs. The collection includes many *sensual* depictions of women’s bodies; if this makes you uncomfortable, please be advised. Overall, I had a great time at MOCA and would recommend visiting, especially if you are a student here in Bangkok.

Compared to crowded tourist hotspots, this place is quiet and full of depth. The ticket is a bit pricey but absolutely worth it. Don’t forget to bring a light jacket—the air conditioning is strong. 📝 Summary: ✅ Art lovers: A comprehensive introduction to the development of Thai contemporary and modern art ✅ Photography enthusiasts: A perfect blend of architectural space and light ✅ Great summer escape: Strong A/C and peaceful atmosphere with few visitors ⚠️ Note: It’s quite far from the city center—consider combining it with a half-day trip to Chatuchak Weekend Market

As an artistic person, most of arts are beautiful to me. This museum is nice as it shows the art of the new generation that try to combine the culture to the era. You will enjoy it more if you are the open-minded type of person. Personally, I would love to see more variety of styles and techniques in their exhibition. It is quite small and emty to me and not reached to my expectation yet, or, maybe I do not get the concept...However, it is a nice place to hangout.

Quite a large museum with a nice permanent collection spread across five floors, and it has a nice cafe as well. 300 baht for foreigners prices it as probably the most expensive art museum in the city but it’s worth it. Plan at least two hours to explore it fully. The museum is fairly far away from central Bangkok, it’s close to the airport rail line but if you’re staying in Sukhumvit it takes a while to get there.
