Museum of Lead Mining

Excellent place to visit with loads of history. The food from the cafè was really great as was the coffee, and they have Oat Milk amd gluten free items. All the staff I spoke too were very enthusiastic about the place. Dogs are allowed inside the cafè within a designated sitting are which is surrounded by historic facts. There are public toilets seperate to the Cafè.

Driven past the sign on the M74 for this many times, finally decided to visit. Was not disappointed. Great little museum, friendly and knowledgeable. Would highly recommend the guided tour. If you have to weight, there is a good circular walk along the steam. Would come again!

It was very good, the museum part was very informative, and we went on a guided tour that included a walk into one of the mines, as far as a stope (dirty big hole in the ground), rhenium down to some workers cottages, a pumping engine, and to the 2nd oldest subscription library in Scotland. The guide was very knowledgeable, he was quite local and therefore difficult to interpret if you were foreign. As we were heading home from a holiday in Scotland we didn't have a lot of time to explore the local area, but there were more trails available to take.

Not particularly cheap but a very interesting tour which my daughter found really interesting with an enthusiastic guide who was happy to chat and answer questions. Small museum and shop on site with a nice tea room to warm up with a coffee afterwards! Well worth a visit and combine with a trip on the narrow gauge railway which is nearby.

A brilliant day out, as simple as that. This is definitely worth a visit, the guided tour is brilliant and informative. It took us just over 2hrs for the full tour.

We visited with our 7 year old. Fantastic day out. Tour guides are so knowledgeable. We had fun going down into the mine for around 30-40 minutes then a short walk to the miners cottages to see how the minors lived. Then a walk up a fairly steep hill to the library. The mine sits in beautiful surroundings well worth a wonder round to take in the sights. Words do not do the surrounding area justice just stunning.

Well, what can I say...... loved it. I thought that museum was one of the best I have been to, in terms of the location, the tour of the mine, exhibition explaining the geology, the café and then the gold panning. It's all in one place. The staff that took the tour lovely people, eager to answer questions and explain things about what had happened at the site. Always courteous and polite. Really lovely people. The staff at the museum, were also courteous, polite and very bubbly. You can tell that the staff all know each other well and like working at the museum. I loved the mine tour and would have loved to see more- eg where the tour stops about a 1000ft into the mine. I believe they are trying to open more of the mine which is great news. The lovely walk to the beam engine and then to the cottage. The library was fascinating and a real eye opener to what education did for the community. The tour was sympathetic to the mining community, at the same time realistic about the families trying to make a living in what were harsh conditions above and below ground. I have nothing other than, it was good value for money, the weather assisted and made for an all-round brilliant experience. Over and above this the narrow gauge railway from Leadhills, using it as transport to the Glengonner mini station to then walk down to the museum is my tip for anyone interested.

Had a family day here today, we tried the gold panning experience. £9.50 per person and it was fantastic! We had a great time and found a little bit of gold each. Highly recommend a visit! Very friendly and helpful staff a lovely tea room and an interesting museum.

Situated in Wanlockhead, the Scotland's highest village, this museum gives a taste of what life used to be like for many of the poor souls who used to mine lead deep deep under the ground. With opportunities to actually go into a now disused mine - at least a little way - and also to see the sorts of accomodation that families used to live in this is a fantastically interesting museum. Come the Christmas season, they even stick Santa down the mine and children can visit him in his 'grotto' ... just mind you head! Attached to the museum is the usual gift shop where all manner of locally crafted goods can be purchased along with samples of some of the areas mineral wealth can be seen. Well worth a visit if you are in the area.

I have visited Wanlockhead and the mining museum twice now and both times came away with a greater understanding and appreciation for the people that mined in that place. The FIRST public library in Scotland! Mining cooperatives rather than typical poor working conditions. The Museum is very interesting and the mine tour is highly informative. The guide when I took the tour was great. The valley is beautiful. If you're within 50 miles, make the effort!
