Museum of the City of Skopje

Really liked this museum. Small exhibitions but good for getting in touch with the city. Not overcrowded. Free entrance. Located in the old railway building that was half destroyed by the 1963 earthquake.

It is completely free and you get to see the development of Skopje from its origins to modern era. It is located on the old railways station, which got partially destroyed by the 1963 earthquake. The clock on the outside still sits at 5:17 - the time when the devastating earthquake took place, and it has been preserved as a memory of the disaster

This is a cool little museum about the City of Skopje. While at first it appears that it may concentrate largely on the devastating earthquake of 1963, it does delve into the periods BC and AD, before brief texts about the history of Skopje during the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes/Yugoslavia, as well as The Balkan Wars, WWI and II, as well the period of Socialism under Tito. All texts are in Macedonian as well as English, as well as some in Albanian and French. The exhibits are spread across two floors, with the Ancient period on -1, and the modern era on Floor 0. Entrance is completely free. There is a ~14 video (in Macedonian) that shows historical videos from around the time of the earthquake and is worth a watch. The museum will likely take around 2 hours max if reading and viewing all texts and exhibits, and even less if you are just taking a look. The staff are friendly and are there to answer any questions you may have.

Artefacts and images show the devastation the earthquake caused for the Macedonian people. Entry is free and it is well worth the visit when you’re in Macedonia.

This is an old railway station with a fascinating history that is definitely worth learning about. The building itself is beautifully preserved, and walking around the station gives you a real sense of its past. It’s a charming landmark that reflects the architectural style and importance of the era it was built in. A must-visit for anyone interested in history, trains, or cultural heritage

Came on a Saturday to the main entrance at 14:30. There was a sign on the door it should be open until 17:00. Doors were locked and inside was dark. A guy appeared and said "close, close", unlocked the door and went inside, then locked behind him. Get your stuff together guys! As far as I know, it was not a holiday.

Interesting place for a wander. Went to learn about the earthquake, but much more there. A few amazing Neolithic pieces, some traditional costumes frescos copies. A little of everything.

The museum definitely feels lackluster, but the admission is free and there's English explanation for most exhibits, which makes up for it. The building itself is a former railway station that was partly destroyed during Skopje's 1963 earthquake. I loved that they left the partly destroyed part as it is, showing the destruction of the earthquake as it is. Which matches with the main theme of the museum, showcasing the history of Skopje before and after the earthquake. The museum also has another section showing some archeological items, but doesn't provide much explanations. Most of the building is still under renovation so only a small part of it is accessible.
