Wonderful piece of history The curator was very friendly and acknowledgeable. He was the best part of the museum. Plus to see and when you think you're done, there's a whole nother section with the house garden and a old outhouse

Cute little museum in the middle of nowhere! Lol. I never imagined to find this here and it was actually very well setup and informative. My son and I enjoyed our time here. It is very small but if you're in the area, check it out.

This was a very cool place to could spend the whole day here learning about Everglades City and the surrounding area.

Great detailed information and the guy at the front really knew his stuff that he shared how the snake exhibit was curated. The special front room exhibit is replaced every 4 months or so. (January should be Randy White focused). Won’t take too long if you are in a hurry but seeing the photos of the building process is impressive - 1.3M sticks of dynamite! Free admission and easy parking.

The manager, he was so knowledgeable gave us some great stories about the past every month. They change the front room so you’re always learning more and more about the Everglades in the history of the area always something new. He was so knowledgeable in the museum was so wonderful thoroughly enjoyed it.

A small but very impressive display of the history of the Everglades area and the building where this museum is located. The revolving display at the time of our visit was the invasive python that number in the 100's of thousands. The gentleman at the desk was very knowledgeable and talked to us at length about the pythons in Florida and the constant effort by the python hunters to track and eliminate this invasive spiece that decimates native wildlife all over Florida.

Not knowing what to expect at such a small venue, we were very surprised at how much history is packed into this place. The gentleman at the front desk was very informative and seemed to really want to answer any and all our questions. They seem to have rotating exhibits up front. During our visit, it was an everglades Python invasion exhibit. It features a local Python hunter, Wildman Dusty, who also has a pizza restaurant in town. Everywhere else is everything everglades. Including movies filmed in the glades. We enjoyed our visit and it's free. Yet they do have a donation box.

What a wonderful time on our visit. A Free museum with absolutely outstanding displays. The curator was incredible and very attentive to ask the visitors. A wealth of information and a true love of Everglade City and Collier County. Must stop location.

Nice little roadside museum. Two short but informative movies on Collier, Collier County and the completion of the Tampa Miami highway, the Tamiami Trail. Friendly people.

A very nice surprise, if you're interested in how the heck southwest Florida was settled, this museum is very informative. No charge for admission, donations only, the museum focuses primarily on Barron Collier's vision and commitment to building a city in south Florida and the Tamiami Trail from Tampa to Miami.

I was visiting Everglades City and stumbled upon this quaint museum. If you have never been to Everglades City it is quite amazing. You drive for what seems like forever and pop out in a historic town at the mouth of the Barron River, on Chokoloskee Bay, population 400. The area was first populated by Native Americans and escaped slaves. The first white settlement was created in 1870 by William Smith Allan. By 1889 the Storter family owned what is now Everglades City. For years the only way to reach it was by boat. Barron Collier came to the area in 1907 and he developed real estate in the area which led to the construction of the Tamiami Trail which broke ground in 1915. It is the southernmost road that connects Miami to Tampa. From there the city sprang up and things were prosperous in Everglades City until the Florida land bust of the 1920's that was caused by hurricanes and the Great Depression. The town of Everglades became a city in 1953. Today fishing and tourism are the main occupations. There are a lot of restaurants that serve up the Florida favorite stone crabs. It is a great place to explore on a day trip. The museum is located in the Everglades Laundry building. It was built in 1927 and added to the US National Register of Historic Places in 2001. The building first served as a laundry and some of the original equipment is part of a display. In 1965 it became the meeting place for the Everglades Women's Club. In 1998 the building opened as a museum. The museum is free to visit. Exhibits start with the Native Americans and covers to today covering a span of 2,000 years of human history. One of the exhibits is about the Storter family who farmed the banks of the Barron River. Another display is about the mythical creature, the Skunk Ape. A screen in the back plays an informative movie about the building of the Tamiami Trail. Surrounding it are movie posters and pictures of movies that were filmed in this area. A display on hurricanes that have hit the area features the old museum sign that was destroyed during Hurricane Irma. other displays detail the history of Everglades City. I loved my visit to Museum of the Everglades. The lady running the museum has a lineage that runs back to the pioneers of the area as do most of the families that live in this town. I learned so much about this place and it made me love it even more. It is quite a trip out to Everglades City but one well worth making.

The taste and history of the Museaum of the Everglades is the greatest story over time from pre-history to modern history. The museum not only highlights all the diversity of the flora and fauna of the everglades, the 10,000 islands and Florida in general. They have artifacts for the 1700's, 1800's and 1900's from indigenous cultures that inhabited the area to the first settlers who broke away from traditional society to move to wild south florida to be free, start a new life or hunt the abundance of wildlife in the region at the time. These hunters killed mostly birds for women's hats in the 1920. The Museum of the Everglades is a must see if you are on the Island. The Everglades are a treasure chest of stories and history. From Collier and his development vison for the Everglades City, to drug smugglers evading police through the dense mangroves, to the first Native Americans who inhabited the shell islands of the area.

A nice little FREE museum. I requested pencils for my students and they were extremely accommodating to my request. The museum was informative and I learned a little bit about the history of the Everglades. A must stop if you have about 30 minutes and are in the area.

Great small museum. Lots of interesting history of Florida. Worth the trip to Everglades City.

Found this randomly, free to go, so that enticed us a bit. A lot of cool historical information about Florida and the Everglades City area. We learned a ton and had a good time. I recommend it, maybe not for kids as a little dry (just thinking about when I was younger, I know I would have said it was boring), but for adults, it really is interesting. And gets you inside after a hot day of fishing or hiking. Check it out!

Very nice museum! Lot's of nice exhibits to learn about the history of the area. There was no entrance fee. Very friendly lady at the front desk is available to answer any questions about local history and the exhibits.

We were down for the Airboat rides and had time to kill, so we took a tour. Very nice for a small Museum, very informative. The lady at the door gave us great advise and was very knowledgeable. We read allot about the town and it's people and it was awesome. We sat threw a couple of movies about how the town came about and it's people. I would highly recommend it.

Stopped in on a day trip and got lost in here for over an hour. Gorgeous building, museum is very well done, and video histories in back were professional and fascinating. Such a nice, knowledgable gentleman up front. Plus, they had cookies on the counter! How welcoming!
