21 Places That Celebrate Female Artists

"Musée de La Femme swung open its doors in September 2018. It’s the first of its kind not only in Morocco, but in all of North Africa. Located in the heart of Marrakesh’s medina in the historical Sidi Abdelaziz quarter, the Musée de La Femme is home to a variety of thematic exhibitions that highlight the creative spirit of Moroccan women and their cultural contributions around the world. Visitors can learn about the historical, social, and political impact of women’s art within the Moroccan landscape through a revolving line-up of cross-genre exhibitions. From contemporary painters, activists, filmmakers, and poets to traditional craftswomen, textile weavers, and fashion designers, the museum highlights a wide scope of artistic achievement. The feminist museum is not only focused on exhibiting contemporary “high” art, but also uses the space to showcase women’s invaluable contributions in the domestic realm, too. The museum’s debut exhibition, for instance, was dedicated to the daily life and artwork of rural women, emphasizing the tropes of family, community, and village lifestyle.  While the exhibition space isn’t particularly large, according to Lonely Planet, “the passionate staff make a visit here worthwhile.” Visitors can meander through three exhibitions floors, including traditional Moroccan fashion and textile collections, which the staff updates every few months.  Musée de La Femme’s exhibition as of June 2019, entitled “Pioneer Women,” highlights three women who helped lay the foundations for contemporary Morocco: politician and education advocate Malika Al-Fassi; documentary filmmaker Izza Genini; and artist Rachida Touijri. “Pioneer Women” runs until September 2019." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Google
Definitely go to this museum about how females contributed to the history of Morrocco. The price is 15dh if you live in Marrakech, or 40 dh for tourists. Definitely worth visiting. Also take a look at the rooftop terrace.

A small museum spread across three floors with a cafe terrace at the top. I think it's great that this museum exists. It shines a new light on the changing role of women from unpaid domestic work to salaried roles, some gaining senior positions. Interesting fact: It was the Queen of the Almoravid dynasty who in 1062 chose the site and drew up plans for a new city named Marrakesh (Land of God) Whilst it's evident that the role of women is advancing from the lead created by featured contemporary women; it is clear that there is a long way to go before Moroccan women have the same opportunities and rights as their Western counterparts.

A wonderful place to discover the contributions women are making in the Moroccan society. The museum is on several levels leading up to the rooftop Terrance restaurant which affords a lovely view of the maze of streets below. The Moroccan desserts and mint tea were an afternoon delight.

Visited the museum in Nov 2025, it was 20 dirahs for a ticket (normally 40 but one floor was closed). The parts that were open were amazing. Very good descriptions and interesting photos. Highly recommend!

Date of visit: august 18th and august 21st. Definitely worth the visit. Beautiful small museum with a nice young lady at the entrance who’s very welcoming. She was very helpful, witty and polite. We visited twice. The museum is a wonderful presentation of Moroccan women who have been and are of great importance. I am very pleased to have been indulged with knowledge and art from and for women with great support of likewise supporting men. As to be expected of Marrakech: a beautiful rooftop to sit and relax or sip on a hot Morrocan tea.

Google
Fascinating museum that gives an interesting insight into the role of women in Moroccan society. It challenges preconceived notions and is packed with art, artefacts and stories to engage the visitor. They have a temporary exhibition which is outstanding, lively and uplifting. The young women that run the museum add to the experience with their humerous and enthusiastic approach to their job. There's also an excellent little rooftop café that has a limited but excellent choice of food at extremely reasonable prices.

A great little museum with a permanent exhibit of prominent women of Morocco throughout history and artefacts of the daily life of (mostly rural) women. There was also a temporary exhibit of the art of Hafida Zizi, which was excellent. On the rooftop terrace was a fantastic little cafe was a nice view of the neighbourhood. Highly recommend stopping in for 30-60 minutes if you need a break from the busy Souk!

Google
Museum spread over three floors where you can learn about trailblazing women who have contributed to many aspects of Moroccan society including the construction of the nation.  At the time of my visit there was a fabulous exhibition of the artist Hafida Zizi who using a vibrant naive style depicts the daily lives of Moroccan women through her works.  There is a small shop where you can buy these and other items like posters from past exhibitions. After my visit, I took in views of the skyline from the rooftop cafe where I enjoyed a selection of briouates and Moroccan mint tea but there is much more on offer from the menu. Special thanks to Ibtissam who provided a warm welcome at the museum's reception desk. I highly recommend a visit.
