For the cost of 478$, 4 people can dine, and be somewhat entertained with a weirdly done murder mystery. I am hoping this review is balanced.
While I enjoyed the food outside of the appetizers presentation, the murder mystery we saw was very, uhm, pieced together and felt pushed. The main character Skip came running down the aisle, contriving the story of a business event/competition that involved two new owners and two fired employees that Skippy had brought back in as employees for marketing, where one or all of them try to poison one of the new owners. It was silly. But I dont think it was trying to be. I wouldn't do the murder mystery again personally.
Alcoholic drinks are additional and the wine menu is not specific as if per bottle or glass, thus causing more questions for the server that already seemed a bit overwhelmed but she was friendly until the end when clean up time occurred then she seemed rushed. Wine list seems limited, nothing local on it, which is odd since the area and surrounding have a number of vineyards. Prices vary from 8 a glass to 225 a bottle. We bought a bottle of Little Black Dress Merlot, 28 even. Our server really struggled with opening the wine, and advised she was used to serving hard liquor and was thus unable to answer questions we had on the wine menu, which was fine til the end when the tour guide advised about their wine dinners and that they always had an expert on board.
Mixed drinks are fantastic. We ordered beer cheese and pretzel which I swear were JayC carrots and celery sticks like the ones you find in snack packs- this was in addition to the cornbread, possible ham or prosciutto with pepper jelly. The meat was room temp, so I'm truly hoping it was cured and the beer cheese was warm at some point but cold by the time we loaded on and we were some of the first to load in.
Train car itself was amazing well cared for and delightfully decorated but we were freezing.
The serving staff was friendly but some of the staff were definitely more comfortable serving, than others, which is a little weird since this is serving, on a train, and balance is key as well as knowledge of the menu that occurs prior to loading during the online ordering process.
The salads were oddly done, mainly due to the romaine recall and listeria outbreak, however the replacement salad was not anything I could eat as it was primarily spinach with two mandarin orange slices. The oranges, cranberries and tomatoes seemed oddly random as well. My friends had one each, and my spouse had five. A suggestion I would make is during times like this, perhaps consider an iceberg as back in addition to a spring salad mix and a bit of containment on the amount and balance of accoutrements. I don't know what salad dressing was brought out so I didn't eat it due to allergens that I have. Which is also funny because after the salads been brought out they mentioned if you had any allergens to let your server know. I kind of feel like that should have been done at the beginning but I don't think my allergens are really important enough for me to brought it to her attention anyway. I just avoid eating the food that I didn't know what was in it.
The dinners were amazing! My table of 4 had the pork with its compote, roast chicken and cranberries, and prime rib. The au jus was not flavored at all, however but brought something additional to the prime rib, I just cant figure out what it was. I've never had a better prime rib, or pork that was this succulent and luscious. The baked potato was fantastic, mine came with the mashed potatoes and there was a truly amazing selection of veggies, but each our plates seemed to either have one carrot, or too many, one Brussels sprout or none, and one plate had a stalk of asparagus but another had four. Again, lacks balance.
As friends, we traded around to get a balance amongst the plates but that wouldn't be the same for everyone.
I cannot rave enough on the coffee and desserts. It was John Conti coffee which I generally dont like but this tasted like Douwe Egbert which I know the taste of distinctly. The server advised it was a special blend John Conti made only for the train.
The desserts we had were the chocolate trifle with Chantilly cream and both myself and the chef at our table couldn't find any Chantilly cream but we did find the whipped cream.
My spouse had the cheesecake, and it was very large but none of the normal hints of lemon or vanilla one expects. Still delish.
Over all, due to company and the main course, it was delightful, we truly could have skipped the mystery murder, the only mystery there was the advertisement of entertainment.
What I do this again? Absolutely but I would not do a murder mystery I think I would just choose a dinner train or one of the wine trains instead. Enjoy the pictures!
