Discover the raw, untouched beauty of Greenland and Faroe Islands - SilverKris

"A remote, almost uninhabited island celebrated for large colonies of puffins and other seabirds, a picturesque lighthouse and rugged hiking terrain; access is limited, the resident population is tiny, and visitors are advised to bring good hiking gear to fully enjoy the wildlife and coastal trails." - SilverKris

June 2025. Fantastic. One of the highlights of our two weeks in the Faroe Islands. We booked the ferry in advance but could have saved some money by paying the hiking fee online instead of when we got there. Don’t skip the hike. It’s worth the money.

To get to Mykines you must catch a ferry from Sørvágur which departs only twice a day and can be impacted by the very wild and changeable weather. Ferry tickets must be purchased in advance and the availability is seasonal. You must also pay for a compulsory guide - a fee of 250DK when we did it and the group size is about 15-20 people. You can book a private guide if you wish. As for the Island. The scenery is spectacular and the hike is fairly easy (although the footing can be quite slippery). The weather changes very quickly so be prepared. Appropriate boots, jacket, hat and yes, even sun protection could all be need in the space of your short visit. You can no longer hike to the Lighthouse du to a rather substantial landslide which destroyed the path. The hike you can take offers some incredible views. Even though we were there in May, we did not see any Puffins up close. The noise from the group we were with and their inability to simply stay back and be quiet had more to do with that than the absence of Puffins. They are very shy and easily scared off. You will see people complaining about this fee, but as with other things in the Faroe Islands this is actually pretty reasonable as the island has a very short season and we are in fact entering a very delicate and private environment.

It’s a great place with amazing views. At the moment there is only one hiking route that you can follow. It’s not possible to go to the lighthouse. I personally think it’s a bit too expensive since you have to pay for the boat trip + hiking fee. If you take one of the “extra boat trips” during high season, you will end up spending 590kr just to get there and walk around. However, I still think is worth it since you have made it all the way to the Faroe Islands. Given only one route was possible I felt I had to stay there for “a bit too long” (9-3pm). There is however a nice coffee shop we’re you can relaxed.

Beautiful place. Puffins were everywhere. One of the easier hikes on Faroe. Don’t forget to bring a cap and sunblock. Although more than half the path is off limits now due to a landslide last October, we still saw plenty of puffins. Only thing was the lady collecting the 250dkk for the hike. She had this unsanitary habit of running her lips with her fingers every single time before she touched something. Which happened to be my card and later on the tickets. Unnecessary bad habit in the time of Covid.

The single best place I have visited in the whole world. I didn't want to leave this island. It was so amazing seeing the puffins and gannets up close in such huge numbers against the backdrop of an unspoilt, dramatic landscape.

Do not plan a trip close to a flight. The weather might change and you will not be able to go back to the main land the same day. So plan it ahead of time, there is one boat and does two trips a day. It is not a big boat and reservations are required. The rest is a Paradise, pack your lunch and snacks, there is a small restaurant with some hot coffe, but not good meals.

Puffins are everywhere! There’s a per person fee of 250 DKK which is about US$34 to visit the island. Once you pay the lady walk up the hill behind her and the puffins are probably nesting in the area to the left of the cliff. It will feel a lot colder than the temperature as the wind is usually quite strong. Wear something thick for the weather.

Amazing boattrip with many chanses to see the puffinbirds, also an amazing walk near the cliffs. On the way back the boat goes near drangamir and tindholmur for some photographing. The locals want to charge 250dk to hike to the puffins from the 1st of july before that date it was free
