"Lake Myvatn Geothermal Site During summer the northern parts of Iceland get almost continuous daylight. The area around Lake Myvatn is ridiculously scenic - and not a little surreal - with geothermal areas (pictured), volcanic lakes and more. This image was taken at 11pm!"

This is a volcanic lake formed after eruption around 2300 years ago that is located on the Ring Road between Aukureyri and Egilsstaðir in the north of Iceland. The lake itself is beautiful and there are quite a few natural attractions related to past volcanic activity that you can seen and explored in the area. It is worth a visit to the Lake Myvatn Visitor Centre on the southwest end of the lake. You will find a small village called Reykjahlíð on the northeast corner where there is a supermarket, Vinbudin bottle shop, local handcraft gift shop, Fish & Chip restaurant as well as camping sites and a few accommodations for those interested in staying around the lake while travelling in the north of Iceland.

Very interesting landscape, nice to walk around a bit. Nearly no midges when we there at the end of June.

Very pretty lake area, lots of birds, went in June. Good wind kept the bugs away.

This beauty is a view from lake . We were lucky to see a rainbow there. The lake was semi frozen but we could see the volcanic mountains very clearly. You just want to keep roaming around this place , it is so so beautiful. The cold breeze makes it a little difficult though but you will love things around here.

Mývatn is the premier area in Iceland to see a wonderful variety of birds. From waterfowl, to phalaropes, to gulls & terns, to the occasional Gyrfalcon - Mývatn has it all. Any passionate bird watcher must take the trek to Mývatn at least once in their birding journeys. You can spend 3-4 days birding the lake and the surrounding area. Mývatn lives up to all the rave reviews. You will not be disappointed!

Myvatn is a very specific place and our stay in this area was unforgettable due to the amazing atmosphere of the place and the time of day (after 10 p.m.) we didn't see anyone in the area apart from one campervan. Amazing landscapes, roaring wind and a truly mysterious aura that is difficult to describe. However, before we got here, we covered the section from Husavik along a road full of amazing landscapes which, although they are practically everywhere in Iceland, were an amazing setting for the magical place called Myvatn! Pretty interesting formations we've seen in Hawaii as well. Glad we took the scenic drive around the lake!
