On the Grid : Small Foods

"Opened by architects Bruce Slesinger and Tom Collom of BAT (whose offices are upstairs), this contemporary convenience store and cafe has a little bit of everything, including smoothies, delicious egg, avocado, and cheese breakfast sandwiches on sourdough English muffins, and high-octane Jittery John’s iced coffee on tap. A healthy selection of grab-and-go items, salads, and made-to-order sandwiches, as well as bouquets from Farmgirl Flowers, are available throughout the day. As Slesinger has said, the place is “sort of a gourmet 7-11.”" - Airbnb

Google
They sell expired food. I bought a bag of popcorn that was best before 3 months before I bought it. I bought a separate bag of chips that had a hole in the bag and when I returned it moments after I walked out the door they put the bag back on the shelf. Then tonight I bought eggs and the sell by date was 3 weeks ago. When I noticed and swapped them out, the clerk put them back on the shelf and I noticed the next pack of eggs in the refrigerator was also 3 weeks out of date. Stale popcorn or chips is one thing, 3 weeks expired eggs is actually an issue. Check your product very carefully or just go to the Trader Joe’s down the street if it’s open

Google
Sold me expired yogurt - 8 days past expiration not even the best by date, but the use by date. They did not offer refund and only potentially an exchange but many of their other yogurts also seemed to be expired..... I would not suggest shopping here especially if you are sick.

Google
Unfortunately, they sold me an expired drink. I noticed right at the store after I sipped it and it tasted horrible. The cashier tried to convince me that the bottle said 2026 instead of 2024, but he eventually acquiesced (as all the bottles were expired and clearly stated 2024). I told them I wanted a refund for the expired drink, but they told me they don’t offer refunds. They offered me a replacement drink, but (a) selling an expired product, (b) lying about the expiration date, and then (c) refusing to give me my money back is terrible policy.

Google
I’ve been shopping at this location for almost 10 years. I really appreciate that the produce is typically organic. You can tell from the produce sticker number starting with a 9… The staff is friendly and treats you like family! Thank you, Nabilas!

Google
Best local store ever! Warm friendly vibe. A great range of quality products. The new loyalty program is also very much worth it. Check out the great wine selection, these guys really know their stuff. I feel very lucky to have Nabila's within walking distance of my front door.

Google
I bought bread and it was molded. When I returned it the put it back in the counter. Update: All their butter was molded and expired.

Google
Great local grocery store, they always have a ton of fresh produce and a surprising variety of products considering the smaller size of the store. The owners are always welcoming and friendly too. Yes it's not cheap, but I think the price is consistent with other local San Francisco stores.

Google
tiny but mighty!! I’m so grateful that this neighborhood grocery continues to serve Hayes Valley. They’ve got a really solid selection of quality foods. Excellent organic produce and dairy (and “dairy”), good cheese and great frozen foods and nice bulk section. They also have a fantastic selection of quality beer, wine, and liquor.

Yelp
Unfortunately it seems they sold me expired food here. When I later came back and pointed this out the employee said it's probably fine -- they did not offer any refund or exchange. Looking at the other yogurts in the fridge many of them were also past expiration date by quite a bit which makes me concerned if they actually check/refresh their shelves Note the picture -- this is not a day or two past expiration, it's 8 days past the Use By safety date expiration ....

Yelp
I highly recommend this business Highly clean I highly suggest this corner shop they bring it to the top This is a stunner to find hard to find items

Yelp
I would like to echo what Rachel said. I've also experienced very inappropriate encounters with Raj. He asked me on multiple occasions "if I liked him" He would also position himself in an aisle that I was passing so I had to brush against him. At one point he even asked me out on a date after I told him I was married. I was pregnant at time, but would make sure I had baggy clothes on if I went in there (at the time, the only grocery store in Hayes valley) I was terrified of him trying to touch my belly. I even had a friend visit from Oakland and he took me aside and asked if she was single.

Yelp
I love Nabila's. The kindness of the staff and the way I'm regularly greeted stands out. It's always nice to look around and see what they have to offer. Nabila's is in my weekly rotation, and is an incredible part of Hayes Valley!

Yelp
I cannot recommend this store because one of their long-term employees consistently sexually harasses female customers, following them around the store, cornering them, telling them he likes them and asking them "if they like him too," forcing them to brush against him to get by him, and other various verbal and sexual abuses. It has been made clear that the advances are not welcome but they continue- we're talking over 2 years here. I've tried to reach out to the owner on two occasions to report the concerns, and have not heard back. I even called once and whoever answered said it was none of my business. I'm saddened by this being allowed to happen in my neighborhood to people I care about and having a business that does not care about the trauma being caused that they are responsible for. I'm reporting it here as a last ditch effort that they'll hopefully rectify the situation.

Yelp
very greedy new owners try not to use this place horrible attitude charged me for 8$ for 2 finger wines

Penelope W.

Yelp
TLDR: disgusting, terrible place!! I went in and got instant noodles and when I got home to cook them the package had sizable animal POOP in it. I also realized the edge of the package had gnaw marks. I immediately went to get a refund and the employee told me he could only provide me with a replacement! When he showed me the replacements they all had the same gnawing on the packaging, so likely had the same (disgusting) problem. He didn't even seem surprised or ashamed about it, so I'm concerned he's just trying to get rid of nasty inventory. TERRIBLE!! I fought for a refund but I'll never go here again.

Yelp
I have popped into this independent grocery store about 3 times now maybe. I decided to get a drink in the morning. I didn't want anything else but a craft lemon soda I had not had before. I thought it was fun to try this craft soda brand. It was in a bottle and it was refreshing. I talked to the guy who runs the shop. His mother's name is Nabila and his family helps run it. It's a family shop in Hayes Valley for groceries...smaller selection, but fun to visit. Wine atmosphere I'd say.

g g.

Yelp
Overpriced. Ridiculously overpriced. 37 bucks for three different vegetables and some cheese. I didn't buy alcohol or anything that could be that expensive. I've noticed very high prices here before but this was just over the top. Also since the new owners took over it has a smell in certain areas. Not sure what's going on here but I do not recommend.

Yelp
This place has a decent selection and my first few visits I was provided solid customer service, unfortunately today, I was trying to fix an issue with my card while waiting to pay, and a side comment was made "this is guy over is texting while I'm waiting", an extremely rude comment to be made to your co worker while face to face with a client.

Loic A.

Yelp
they overcharge the **** out of you. avoid at all costs. if youre dying of thirst and need water and nabilas is the only place that is open, just die at that point its not worth it

Yelp
I have been coming to this little store for awhile, it was my main grocery spot when I lived in Hayes Valley in 2012. Now that I live in the Western Addition I stop by for snacks or just a bag of groceries to get me by for a few days. They have a surprising amount of food in a fairly small shop. You can get fresh vegetables, frozen Amy's dinners, rice, bread, coffee creamer, kombucha, a million types of "healthy" candy, coconut bliss ice cream... basically all my staples in a Whole Foods run. There's also some prepackaged fresh food like dolmas and sushi in the refrigerator closest to the register. If you're looking for meat you probably need to go somewhere else though. I don't remember ever buying any here. The guys at the register are always genuinely friendly and playing chill music. And if you're lucky you might see Tosca, the shop's friendly cat. In fact I can't lie sometimes when I'm walking by I will go in just to see if she's there.

Yelp
Nice neighborhood store We were walking around Hayes Valley and decided to stop in Nabila's to check out their wine rack. We were impressed with their selection. My girlfriend was looking for Spanish Wines and ended up finding a couple of bottles that she wanted. The gentleman who was there, was very helpful in assisting her finding the wine. While she was looking for wine, I looked around the store and was impressed with the collection of goods they have there. I don't live in Hayes Valley, but if I did, I'd buy my groceries here.

Yelp
I've been shopping here the last few years, but decided to write a review because of how kind and thoughtful their employees are during the Covid-19 pandemic. Thank you for showing such warm customer service during these stressful times! Since it's a local spot, you can trust they'll be pretty stocked. All the employees were wearing mask and gloves, and they only allow a few customers at a time. -- Nabila's is a fresh local produce shop with a pretty wide selection of other things. This is Hayes Valley (nicer neighborhood in the city), so you can expect to find organic selections as well :).

Abhinav S.

Yelp
Nice little grocery/convenience store with personal service! Great for a quick last minute shopping!
google avatar

Russell H.

Yelp
Whenever we are in the City we have breakfast on Hayes . Then go to Natural's to pick up the Chronicle and a few items and visit Tosca the store cat,

Steven S.

Yelp
Was a consistent customer for a few months, however after multiple visits with horrible customer service it's safe to say I will not be returning. The employee with a mustache is very disrespectful and always seems to be annoyed when a customer walks in. Not the best environment to be put in while looking for groceries id suggest to shop elsewhere.

Yelp
If I lived in SF, this neighborhood store would be what I would wish to live close to. Stocked with so many healthful comestibles, it is charming and well laid out. Pleasant to take a stroll through the place. Nabila is the Palestinian mom's name of the gentleman who rang me up. The paintings and art around the market simply add to its charm. Great place in Hayes.

Yelp
Lately - I've been on a huge Paul Newman kick. Watching his movies, sporting self made Paul Newman shirts, posting epic quotes by the great philanthropist and actor, and the list goes on... While sporting one of my Paul Newman shirts - I wandered into Nabila's to stock up on some kombucha. I was impressed by the assortment of health related goods. They carried a formidable array of gluten free, vegan, and generally health conscious snacks, drinks, cooking supplies etc. I grabbed a kombucha and made my way to the front counter. The guy at the front counter - noticed my shirt right away and we both began to talk about the wondrous man that was Paul Newman. He began pointing out all of the Newman's Own products that he carried and he discussed how great they are. I walked out with a big smile on my face and a refreshing bottle of kombucha. If you need to stock up on some healthy groceries - don't hesitate to take your business over to Nabila's. Trust.

Yelp
Great place! Came here because Fatted Calf was out of bread. Saw that they have Acme bread so I walked over asap! Picked up a baguette and 6 eggs; ready to go. This is a solid place that keeps the locals running. You can also tell that make a decent effort of of keeping the place nice and presentable with fresh food and a variety of other common essentials. Staff were quick and attentive.
google avatar

Yelp
These little health food stores mostly just blend into each other in my mind, and at first glance Nabila's is no exception, but if you look a little closer the details add up to one quality place, from the well-seasoned, subtly skylit interior to the mid-70's Marvin Gaye soundtrack to the impeccable produce to the wine selection to the prices that will make you blink at the register (in a good way), at least considering you're in Hayes Valley. Green Earth on Divis, take note: if you want to be the anchor of a fully-gentrified Nopa in 5 years, this is the place to model yourself on.

Yelp
Such a cool neighborhood health store. It's not all healthy here, fortunately. I came here for beer. Quite the opposite of healthy. They had a wonderful selection of IPAs from local breweries, available in six packs, or by the bomber. The prices were quite reasonable. The clerk was friendly and helpful. He offered to open up the beer for me, and gave me a brown paper bag so I wouldn't get hassled by the man. They have a great selection of healthy products from lotions, balms, dry goods, fresh food, and literature to learn about healthy living. The store was a bit on the cramped side, but they're just doing the most with the limited amount of space that they have. The beer was incredibly cold, which I really enjoyed. Some coolers aren't as cool as this one was. This was downright frosty! This was a great place to duck in and have a quick bite or a drink! I highly recommend this health store.
google avatar

K P.

Yelp
The only grocery store in the neighborhood. But, they're also the only store we've ever been to in the city that doesn't allow (small, polite) dogs inside. Also, they've decided to put most of their prices at 2x the safeway/trader joes baseline. Some things are not 2x but many things are. It's a hassle. When I first went here in 2013 it seemed like they had better stuff for more normal prices.
google avatar

Andrea G.

Yelp
A lovely local with a good variety of food, veg, fruit and booze. Reasonably priced. Staff make it feel like home.
google avatar

Avery C.

Yelp
Nabila's is a wonderful friendly and caring neighborhood market with a good selection of basic fresh fruits and vegetables, freshly ground coffee, wine, cheese etc. Check out the day old Acme bread bin by the register! These folks are a neighborhood gem!
google avatar

Stephanie R.

Yelp
Great staff, family business, high quality and well stocked during the stay in place. Support our long time neighbors.
google avatar

Candace S.

Yelp
Nabila's typically has locally sourced & organic produce. The eggs are local, the honey is local, the Santa Cruz peanut butter is local... All around it's just a really adorable neighborhood grocery store. You are going to pay a little bit higher price than you would at Trader Joe's or Safeway, but honestly I'd rather pay a little bit higher price and get higher quality items. The staff are usually very friendly and helpful, and I really like supporting this local business over huge grocery chain
google avatar

Matthieu T.

Yelp
Decent neighborhood store if you don't mind paying more than you should. But the formerly "$2 markup on any items" is now going through the roof. Just bought a $10+ pot of yogurt. When mentioment that it was $7 last time I was told that "wholesale milk has been really high in California lately".. Checked on instacart afterwards. Same item can be had at whole foods or bi rite for $5.45. That's a 100% markup Nabila! There is a fine line between overpriced convenience and rip off, and I think you've crossed it.
google avatar

Courtney O.

Yelp
Great neighborhood store! The are the heart of Hayes :)
google avatar

Corey O.

Yelp
Expensive. They don't really carry meat (only some frozen stuff). They have OK produce. Poor selection of cheeses. Good beer and wine selection. They have crackers, breads, rice, coffee. Most of the essentials, however.... It's the type of place that adds a dollar or two to every item that you buy at a Safeway or Whole foods. In other words, it's nice in a pinch, but if you're doing a weekly haul of grocery shopping, don't bother. it's 2016 and Instacart, among others, has better prices and will deliver within an hour or 2.

Yelp
Nabilas what a great store very good selection of food drinks and spirits! Five stars !
google avatar

Nicole G.

Yelp
I was really excited to get to know my neighborhood health food store when I moved into Hayes Valley. Nabila's was almost too perfect to be true with flowers out on the sidewalk, a large wine and tea selection, natural supplements behind the counter and organic produce to boot. But upon closer inspection, I wasn't totally happy that this would be the only health food store in my 'hood. The food is overpriced, the produce is not in great condition and of course, it's always super crowded. No offense, Minx (the cat) -- you're 5 stars in my book! Will I be back? Of course! The curse of the neighborhood health store is that you always need it.
google avatar

Kevin J.

Yelp
Nabila's Health Foods is by far the coolest little grocery store in San Francisco! Honestly this place rocks. With it's cool lounge music and fresh produce you hardly realize you're in a store. If you can imagine some chill island in the Bahamas with food from local farmers that would be what you'll experience in Nabilas. Whether it be organic bread selections, fresh produce, chilled drinks, or a decent wine selection, this store has it all. Got a sunburn and need some Aloe Vera? Nabilas got it. You'll not only feel at ease in this location, you'll be in a cheerier mood once you enter. Ahhh! Go relax when you shop. No need to stress out about dinner plans or someone forgetting to buy the garlic. Nabilas got you covered.
google avatar

Yelp
Remember that scene in Harry Potter when Hermione has that little purse, but she's able to pull all sorts of crazy things out of it, because it's magical? That's how I feel about Nabila's! This store is so tiny and yet it always seems to have absolutely every random thing I'm looking for. Best of all, it's all health foods! So you can find things like bulk lentils, miso powder, coconut water, frozen vegan entrees, organic bananas, unsweetened organic soy milk, and the list goes on and on. It's seems to be a family run business and the people are super friendly. I'm so grateful to have this wonderful little store in my neighborhood!
google avatar

Catrinel A.

Yelp
My first encounter with Nabila and their friendly staff was almost two years ago when I moved to San Francisco. My roommate and I were scoping out the place we now live in and took a little stroll on Hayes to see what there was to offer...long story short we walked into Nabila all slap happy and stuff looking for a couple cans of Coca Cola. roommate: hey, you guys have PoP? clerk: uhm, what kind of Pop? me: you know, like Coke. clerk: uhm no we're a natural food distributor. At which point we learned that Nabila would not be a place to go pick up some good old fashioned Midwestern POP but rather a "oh shit, we need a tomato" destination. It's convenient and nice to have but I certainly don't frequent it like some people I know. Sidenote: If you are looking for some POP on Hayes run into Fritz where they have the best Coca Cola in a bottle....yummmm.
google avatar

Ashleigh K.

Yelp
The first time I went into Nabila's their shop cat, Minx, jumped up on my shoulders and comfortably lazed there for the rest of the time I shopped... I think it was a particularly cold day but I like to think it was because he likes me. Anyway, aside from housing THE friendliest resident pet in San Fran, Nabila's also provides my household with some of the best fresh food and eco-friendly cleaning products within walking distance. Their veggies and fruits are never ever mushy or brown and always fresh and pesticide free. Yay! I think my favorite thing they offer is the grains in bins. It's perfect for recipes that call for weird grains I don't normally use; that way I can take just as much as I need plus it's much easier to try things without feeling like I'm spending money on something I might not like. Go to Nabila's if you live anywhere near it and support your local grocer! Safeway sucks.
google avatar

Megan P.

Yelp
This is my closest local market. Reminds me of the 'fancy' bodegas I used to go to in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Yes, it's pricier than Safeway. But it's convenient, the owners/clerks are super nice, and the selection is pretty good, especially if you want to try to be healthy or cook something fancyish and grab a cheap bottle of wine. If cheaper or less healthy food appeals to you, go to Hayes Market down the street (they carry full liquor, "regular" chips, soda, etc but no produce) or Nick's over on Page (who have almost everything Safeway has, for pretty cheap). For some reason I don't mind paying a little more here for the convenience and awesome service. They want you to let them know if you liked a particular wine so they can continue to stock better bottles. They'll always ask you how your day/weekend is going, and with a smile-- they really seem to care about building a relationship with the neighborhood. It's a truly nice group of folks that run this place, and that counts. My only complaints -- I wish they had prettier flower bouquets! The garish melange of colors in the bouquets just doesn't work for me. Wish they could take a cue from Birch across the street and at least group similar colors together, or stock maybe a few dahlias or ranunculus. Also, if they opened at 8 I'd be more likely to stop in before work in the morning, or if they were open till 10 I'd pop in to get something instead of getting takeout. Still, a great healthy/gourmet market for the neighborhood. Glad they're here.
google avatar

Taher S.

Yelp
old expired food for very expensive. Sad they sold some something they knew was old and didn't say anything.
google avatar

Yelp
Good news, folks: even if you don't happen to have a disposable income, but you somehow find yourself in Hayes valley, you can still pop into this cute little health food store and not break the bank!! This may be the only down-to-earth establishment on Hayes street. I really liked it right away for personal reasons (it smells exactly like a health food store I used to go to with my mother, growing up, in palo alto). Like a little woody and a little herbally and little earthy (must be all the health food and vitamins!) They have good stuff... produce, a bulk section, lots of chocolate...they even have alternative medicinals and stuff like that, behind the counter. It is definitely one of the best smaller health food stores I have seen in the city, outside of Rainbow Groceries. The guys working there were super nice and cool. They had on a Thievery Corporation pandora station. I would cross neighborhoods to come here again.
google avatar

Lainie W.

Yelp
Great food for a corner store... but 9 bucks for quinoa? - Eff that! The same pack at Whole Paycheck is 4.50! I'd have to be really drunk to think these prices are OK!
google avatar

Mabel F.

Yelp
As a Hayes Valley resident I am terminating my shopping here after the treatment I received. One of the owners/managers told the lady running my purchases to make sure I didn't lie about the $/lb for my yogurt clusters. I was appalled at this given that I had been a customer here for the last year. If you think you need to check on a customer don't say it in front of the customer. Not only that but I recall once where they entered a higher $/lb and tried to pass it off as the published price. When I told them it was wrong they grudgingly changed it. So much for the neighborhood feel. I support family run businesses but not ones who treat their customers poorly.
google avatar

Nishant B.

Yelp
Two words: frozen kefir. This is the only store in the neighborhood that carries it, to my knowledge. Good quality basic produce also.
google avatar

Andrea T.

Yelp
I live in the neighborhood, and Nabila's is a great place to get last-minute items. Be it white wine (I prefer red wine and always have some at home, but when I need some white wine this is a great place to grab a bottle), eggs, milk, spices, or any other random thing I have needed, this place has come through for me. The selection of wines, spices, teas, and natural foods is good considering how small this place is. I haven't tried the produce yet, but I will no doubt need some last minute produce someday and it is nice that they have it. Also, I think it's important to mention that the people behind the counter have always been very nice and helpful. I'm glad to have this store nearby.
google avatar

Mellissa B.

Yelp
Situated in the hip Hayes street district, this is a lovely, airy and bright natural foods store which includes a fair amount of fresh produce, and quite a few gluten free selections such as pasta and cookies. You can also find Amy's brand gluten free refrigerated items, a large selection of wine (and you know I always gotz ta have my good California wine!), organic and high end pantry items and even mainstream snacks and drinks. Pick up some beautiful fresh flowers here! I forgot that in California, co-ops and natural food markets are called "health food stores." Brings back fond memories of living in CA as a kid, and makes me feel better about eating a half bag of gluten free cookies.
google avatar

Danielle S.

Yelp
I go here mostly for pita and hummus. They a have a large selection of Mediterranean side dishes that I was a huge fan of. Then, a few weeks ago I went in for my usual hummus and pita and decided to get some tabbouleh. I took one bite and instantly noticed the foul taste, so I spit it out. When I looked inside the container more closely, I saw a short white fuzz growing on it. I was totally disgusted and irritated that I paid $4.79 for moldy tabbouleh. I will go back for the hummus and pita, because its the only place for several blocks where you can buy pita. Its definitely overpriced!
google avatar

Linzi B.

Yelp
I work close by and Nabila's is a great place to quickly grab an affordable lunch and/or snack. They get locally made lunches delivered daily (in the refrigerator closest to the counter). Everyone who works there is super nice and they become quick friends with the regulars. Pro tips: * the sushi is delivered fresh at noon * they don't accept credit cards for under $5, so I always bring cash
google avatar

J F.

Yelp
Delicious choices of ingredients to be found at Nabila's. Good prices too and super convenient for those living in Hayes Valley. You can get dinner to go at Paxti's, grab a video at Into Video and duck into Nabila's for some good wine and call it the beginning to a great weekend. The owners are so neighborly . . . love them!

Yelp
My mother, son, and I were in Hayes Valley and came across this grocery store in search of some fresh fruits. The staff was really helpful and friendly. The cashier carried on a conversation with my 5 year old son and helped me to find out if a product I was about to purchase was safe for pregnant women or not (I'm currently 4 months pregnant). My mother was in search of some dried split peas and the woman behind the counter offered to walk her to help her get some. Our experience, overall, was the kind of family friendly and personal service we don't often get anymore. I would definitely come back here. Great service!

Yelp
Who doesn't love a little neighborhood grocer!? Nice selection of produce and the daily essentials. The folks working there are friendly and warm, and that is just all an extra little benefit for shopping at this cute little neighborhood spot.
