This is my closest local market. Reminds me of the 'fancy' bodegas I used to go to in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Yes, it's pricier than Safeway. But it's convenient, the owners/clerks are super nice, and the selection is pretty good, especially if you want to try to be healthy or cook something fancyish and grab a cheap bottle of wine. If cheaper or less healthy food appeals to you, go to Hayes Market down the street (they carry full liquor, "regular" chips, soda, etc but no produce) or Nick's over on Page (who have almost everything Safeway has, for pretty cheap).
For some reason I don't mind paying a little more here for the convenience and awesome service. They want you to let them know if you liked a particular wine so they can continue to stock better bottles. They'll always ask you how your day/weekend is going, and with a smile-- they really seem to care about building a relationship with the neighborhood. It's a truly nice group of folks that run this place, and that counts.
My only complaints -- I wish they had prettier flower bouquets! The garish melange of colors in the bouquets just doesn't work for me. Wish they could take a cue from Birch across the street and at least group similar colors together, or stock maybe a few dahlias or ranunculus. Also, if they opened at 8 I'd be more likely to stop in before work in the morning, or if they were open till 10 I'd pop in to get something instead of getting takeout.
Still, a great healthy/gourmet market for the neighborhood. Glad they're here.
