As a recovering anime nerd, I fondly recall my forays into the warrens of Nakano Broadway, looking for unusual treasures. Here I've spent so many thousands of Yen here, gobbling up trinkets and baubles to fuel my dangerous collector's habits. That being said, to find the "good stuff", you have to know where to look. And so, I present to you this "Guide on How To Waste All of Your Money Buying Anime Stuff at Nakano Broadway" (copyright JVC, 2020). ;)
Once you enter Nakano Broadway, spend some time perusing the shops along the arcade, but keep progressing forward. When you get to "the end", your journey is just beginning. After leaving the covered alley of the arcade and enter the building proper, there will be an increased density of restaurants on the first and second floors. Stop for a snack or a meal; you'll need to keep up your strength if you are to emerge with loaded bags of swag. Continue working your way upwards. The third and fourth floors are "where it's at" for the connoisseur or all things anime, but not where you might think.
The layout on these upper floors can be a bit hit-or miss; some of the storefronts are empty or closed off, occasional sections are dimly lit, and there isn't a good "flow" to the layout, but continue in a roughly circular fashion, and be sure to poke your head around every bend or corner to make sure you don't miss anything. Skip Mandarake, and look for the little shops hoarding figures, knick-knacks and chotchkies from the forgotten anime classics of yesteryear. Be thorough, and before you know it, you'll be broke and happy. Just make sure you have room in your suitcases to bring it all home; otherwise, you'll have to do as I did, and send yourself international packages from a local post office, which is about as fun as it sounds (customs forms + language barrier), and not cheap.
