27 Best Things to Do in Tokyo

"A Tokyo mecca for anime- and manga-loving otaku subculture fans, the Nakano Broadway is a multi-story shopping arcade that has become a hub for niche collectors of all stripes. When it first opened in 1966, the complex epitomized the spirit of future-perfect economic optimism sparked by the Tokyo Olympics. Competition from newer shopping malls emptied its corridors of fancy boutiques in the 80s, before the Broadway reinvented itself as a center for used manga and anime models in the 90s. More than 300 tiny outlets are crammed into the aging edifice’s bottom five floors, offering everything from vintage Godzilla and Astroboy figurines to designer watches and creepy dolls galore." - Anna Chittenden, Melinda Joe

Most of the shops is not open until 12pm so if you came early you will be faced with empty nakano broadway (you can still shop at the front shopping alley though) Some of the shops is also closed even when I went there on weekdays. But beware as well some of the shop offer higher prices than usual. I find Mandarake store can offer best price at some products. For foreigners shopping at Mandarake and wanted to claim tax free you can combine multiple receipts from Mandarake and combine to get 5500 yen total for tax exemption eligible.

Nakano Broadway is a great place for anime and collectible lovers. The mall has many small shops with rare figures, manga, vintage toys, and unique items you can’t find anywhere else. It’s easy to reach, fun to explore, and has a special old-school vibe. A perfect spot for fans who enjoy treasure hunting.

Nakano Broadway is a fantastic spot for finding vintage treasures, from watches to anime collectibles. I picked up a few great items here — just make sure to check everything carefully before buying. Definitely worth a visit if you’re into unique finds!

This is the place to go to for otaku and collector stuff. From toys to Pokémon collector cards to vintage movie posters to second hand branded bags and watches, this is the place to kill many hours. Surrounding shopping streets around nakano broadway offer many affordable shopping and food selections too.

It’s a must go place for figurine bargain hunters. Everyone goes to Akihabara for figurines but missed out on this superb place. Besides figurines and gashspons there are also other souvenirs that you can get here. P.s: I visit this place on my occasions. You won’t miss it. Just a distance from the last station of the Tozai line. Along the way there are many eateries too.

Nakano Broadway is a must-visit spot for anime, manga, and collectible fans! There are tons of unique shops packed with figures, vintage items, and souvenirs. The atmosphere is lively but not too crowded, and it’s easy to spend hours exploring each floor.

Google
For us not looking for any particular anime toys or figures, first visit here & this place offers a different nostalgic kind of vibe. More toys seen on the upper storey, and less crowd similar to shopping street in other cities. Unlikely for us to revisit due to interest and it is out of the way

Google
Nakano Broadway is a legendary multi-story shopping complex in Tokyo, widely known as the "Otaku Mecca" that predates and rivals Akihabara. While its ground floor hosts typical shops and cafes, the real attraction lies in the upper floors (2nd through 4th), which form a dense, nostalgic labyrinth dedicated almost entirely to subcultures and collectibles. The complex is famous for being the main headquarters for Mandarake, which operates dozens of specialized shops within the building selling everything from vintage manga, rare animation cels, old-school video games, classic action figures, idol merchandise, and retro toys.

Yelp
This is the spot if you're collectible hunting and want to try something that's not Akihabara. This is a bit smaller but there are more rare items here. Prices vary from store to store. Sometimes you'll find items with stores next to each other with a huge difference in price. That's just the way it is. There are four floors of goodies, so it can take some time. Hours are all over the place for the stores. One second a store is closed, and the next it's open. Try your luck and you might find a toy or CD/Video Game you're looking for.

Yelp
As a recovering anime nerd, I fondly recall my forays into the warrens of Nakano Broadway, looking for unusual treasures. Here I've spent so many thousands of Yen here, gobbling up trinkets and baubles to fuel my dangerous collector's habits. That being said, to find the "good stuff", you have to know where to look. And so, I present to you this "Guide on How To Waste All of Your Money Buying Anime Stuff at Nakano Broadway" (copyright JVC, 2020). ;) Once you enter Nakano Broadway, spend some time perusing the shops along the arcade, but keep progressing forward. When you get to "the end", your journey is just beginning. After leaving the covered alley of the arcade and enter the building proper, there will be an increased density of restaurants on the first and second floors. Stop for a snack or a meal; you'll need to keep up your strength if you are to emerge with loaded bags of swag. Continue working your way upwards. The third and fourth floors are "where it's at" for the connoisseur or all things anime, but not where you might think. The layout on these upper floors can be a bit hit-or miss; some of the storefronts are empty or closed off, occasional sections are dimly lit, and there isn't a good "flow" to the layout, but continue in a roughly circular fashion, and be sure to poke your head around every bend or corner to make sure you don't miss anything. Skip Mandarake, and look for the little shops hoarding figures, knick-knacks and chotchkies from the forgotten anime classics of yesteryear. Be thorough, and before you know it, you'll be broke and happy. Just make sure you have room in your suitcases to bring it all home; otherwise, you'll have to do as I did, and send yourself international packages from a local post office, which is about as fun as it sounds (customs forms + language barrier), and not cheap.

Yelp
This place was really interesting. It had a mix of everything. The deeper you go into it you will find a great selection of anime figures, video games, old systems and funky clothing. I ended up finding an old school Gameboy color for $20, Ghostbusters 2 for the NES and a bunch of fun Sailor Moon things. I think the prices here were better than akihabara. A must see when visiting

Yelp
I love this place! If you have any interest in Otaku/Geek culture, you will absolutely love this place. And if not, there is plenty of discount shopping, food, groceries, snacks, and other Japanese subculture. Pros: -Mandarake -Anime Toys for cheap -8-Flavor Ice Cream Cone -Lots of weird, pervy gachapon -Sex Shops -Cheap Food -Lots of Izakaya -Weird Theme Cafes -Cheap Souvenir Shopping Cons: -Nothing is open until 12 noon

Yelp
Nakano Broadway is a relatively short walk from Nakano station. Not too hard to miss. It has a bit of everything going on--- food, clothes, hobbyist stores, and the like. In terms of it being an A-list location for nerdery, I felt a little underwhelmed. Half of us had spent several days by now riding out our Airbnb in Akihabara and were kinda spent mentally--- maybe spiritually, but that didn't stop us from seeing what Nakano Broadway had to offer. It was a rainy day, and the crowds actually weren't that bad. They had an exhibit with Pixiv upstairs that was really great to check out. A lot of stores had a bit more of the older franchises over anything newer which was cool. Lots of great figures and merch. They also had a lot of shops with cute boutique stuff too. So overall, there was quite a myriad of vendors. While walking in it reminded me a little of the side streets in Naha and Kokusai. My verdict is maybe hit Nakano Broadway up first as there might be better prices here. Before you get way overwhelmed in Akihabara.

Yelp
Definitely a hobbyist's paradise! This place looks older than most, almost a little run down even, but that gives it an interesting charm! This place is packed with books, figurines, games, collectables, old and new! You could spend a whole day here just wandering all the floors. I really enjoyed the packed bookstores with narrow aisles, so narrow it could fit on person at a time! One of the shops had a bunch of figurines from the cheap to the more rare! What I liked about it most was that they had all the current gachapon (capsule toys) that you could purchase without paying a gachapon machine, hoping to get the one you wanted...! I'm a huge gachapon fan and I thought this was a great idea! Will definitely come here for some hobby shopping when I return!!

Yelp
This place is cool to check out. The building is filled with Mandarake and other cool toy/manga/Otaku shops. Sensory overload. The bottom floor also has a food court in case you get hungry. They even have a daiso here. Great place to go shopping and check out!

Yelp
This is a decent place to purchase anime items and there's numerous shops to compare prices. In addition there is a mall prior to entering the building Nakano Broadway. You will find restaurants, bakeries and other retail shops. The variety of stores is a nice addition to the shopping experience.

Yelp
Too awesome!!! ------------------------ I went here with my son looking for toys.. and I could have broken the bank! After getting out the station, you start walking in what seems to be a shopping street. At the end you see Nakano Broadway. We looked around and didn't see much. But it was when I went up stairs... BAM!!!! TONS OF HOBBY STUFF!!!! Models toys Kawaii.. My favorite spot was the one with the M.U.S.C.L.E.S because those were the toys I grew up with.. but not only that, the particular spot had TONS of 80's toys... If I could recommend a spot... this is that spot!

Yelp
This shopping complex is rather crazy and also a little dingy, but you can find almost anything, from toys to seafood! If you're looking for used video games or old gatchapon toys, this is the place! Some shops were so small and full that we could barely edge our way around. Still, it's a geek paradise.

Yelp
Nakano Broadway is a place to be! Great place to dine at and do some shopping! It's truly a place for people that collect games, anime, books, and more! They have several floors to this center and it's so much fun going through each floor. They have a market on the bottom floor! So don't miss out if you want to get some fresh produce! One of the top floors has a mini arcade area that a lot of the teens like to meet up and challenge each other. It's a pretty neat place! My boy friend, friends, and I came here several time to shop for our own goodies as well as souvenirs! It was really a paradise!

Yelp
Great place to get lost! Lol if you narrow places to shop than this us the place for you! Went there to look for Japanese action figures but it really had only one store that fit my description. If you are looking for Kamen Rider, Kikaida figures than go to the 3rd floor the Mandarake Special 2 and start digging! I didn't find anything but my family found deals in the various book shops!

Yelp
Nakano Broadway is for the truly dedicated fan of Japanese pop culture. Mandarake, the Amoeba Music of Manga is located here, and to stroll among used and new books is surely a time-waster of great joy. Many toy shops, and an excellent location for vintage toys from the 50s and 60s. There is also a great underground bookstore here, that has Japanese counter-culture zines, as well as underground music on CD. And speaking of which, there is also a fantastic store that focuses on the 1980s Electro-pop music, especially on Japanese artists. If you are a YMO fan or like early Ultravox, this is the place for you. Great neighborhood as well to roam through various food places and small shops, bars, etc. Go!

Yelp
Great place to add to your itinerary - I will be back! Nakano Broadway is a mall, 3 or 4 floors of anime themed stores. Anime figures, books, puzzles, costumes, and a few eateries. My favorite part of the mall was the basement - A Supermarket!! No, not the fancy depachikas - I mean like grocery super market. Loved it! So much great food for real prices, where the real housewives in Tokyo would shop. Next time, I will come back without lunch yet - and buy food here! Just because I would feel like I'm a local. We did do the 8 flavor ice cream cone. Finished in 5 minutes - the whole thing :) $4 usd Loved how it's rainbow ice cream cone!!

Yelp
Nakano Broadway is one of the first places I visited in Tokyo but didn't really know how extensive this place was until I got to walk through every floor and oh my god this place is a dream if you're crazy about manga and anime. The first floor has a bunch of different stores from cafes, to anime stores, to phone stores. The second floor is manga and anime-centric and you'll find maybe one of the widest selections of otaku media in all of Japan. You'll see nerds the world over coming to Broadway. The third floor is full of anime collectors items, action figures, souvenirs and then the fourth floor becomes more of an empty wasteland of closed stores. But luckily the creme de la creme is tons of fighting games in an old style arcade. Love. Also cheap plays too. So take a look at Broadway and feed your anime addiction.

Yelp
So you get off at Nakano, and you can't miss Nakano Broadway, I remember walking around the station (full circle) trying to find the place, past the cherry blossom trees its pretty obvious! Why because its a massive shopping mall. You walk in and there is a long corridor with shops and restaurants either side. What was amazing was as I walked down the corridor they were playing music by one of my favourite Japanese composers, Ryuchi Sakamoto, specifically 'Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence' I then learnt that Mr Sakamoto was in fact born in Nakono - go figure. In any case at the end of this corridor you hit Nakano Broadway - four floors of bliss. especially if you are looking for anime swag. Yes I found soundtracks to old anime's that I had seen years back and really if you are a fan of any anime shop or gear - you have to come here! Nakano Broadway forever!!!
