Kumano-bettei NAKANOSHIMA (Nachikatsuracho, Higashimuro-gun, Wakayama Prefecture) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Kumano-bettei Nakanoshima is blessed, first and foremost, with an astonishing location, on a small and densely forested island at the mouth of Wakayama’s Katsuura Bay. There’s been a ryokan on this site for 80 years, but in 2019 a new building expanded the capacity of the only lodging on the island. Hot-spring baths are present as a matter of course, as are a number of classically Japanese tatami-style rooms; they’re joined by luxurious Western-style rooms in a colorful contemporary style. And as in any ryokan worth its salt, you’ll get a crash course in the region’s cuisine via a hyper-local kaiseki dinner." - Tablet Hotels

One of our best Onsen hotel throughout Japan! Stay there in June 2024, the service is great from the parking to the short boat transfer to the hotel. The room is very beautiful in the island. The onsen is beautiful withe great amenties with nice view along the island. Women can wear the given suit for the outdoor onsen which the upper floor has small grotto and bed where you can lay in the hot water which is nice. Still to little of massage chair provided for the onsen. The dinner course is top notch. Excellent wagyu shabu with extra complimentary beef provided. The beer and ice cream also provided after taking bath. The hotel shop have interesting products to choose. The breakfast is okay with good quality of food. We also booked the dolphins trip with the hotel and have a nice time private kayak tour just not far from the hotel. Great unforgettable experience here!

Overall, a good experience, though not a truly Japanese one. ||The hotel is the sole presence on the island. Make sure to take the walk to the top of the island as the views are worth the effort. The staff are great, the food too. Parking in town is free and convenient, the staff taking bags to the nearby dock for the 5 minute trip to the hotel. We stayed in a room with an outside bath (not geo-thermal water), which are in the new building near the dock. These rooms are spacious, well equipped and well finished. The majority of rooms (perhaps 40?) are in the main building on the other side of the island. No idea how these compare. The onsen and rotenburo are supplied with geo-thermal water.||The hotel seemed full during our visit in March. The majority of guests, perhaps 75%, appeared to not be Japanese. The whole onsen/kaiseki experience is uniquely Japanese, however their absence makes the hotel feel a bit like a theme park.||A fairly pricey place to stay, but (probably) worth it. We'd like to return.

We just got engaged and I can assure you the staff goes above and beyond to make your experience unique and unforgettable. I won't share the many things they did for us but this plus the seaside hotspring as well as other surprises in the island made us regret not being able to spend more time there. We will come back for sure on our next trip to Japan! Thank you very much for having us ♥️

This hotel was a wonderful experience at the end of our trip to Japan. It has a very cute setting and all the staff were warm, welcoming and helpful. I would like to give a special thank you to Ako Kawashima who served us during dinner. She is a very nice young lady who was very kind to us and explained everything to us in detail.

It’s a perfect getaway for the hustle and bustle of our city life. We have enjoyed a lot of the onsen experience. Worth mention that the hotel has offered several activities on spot, fishing, a walking trail around the island with a scenic onsen foot bath.

Can't see why this is rated as a 3 star hotel...it's a 4 any day. Located on an island, a 5 minute boat ride from the mainland, the hotel has great staff, food and onsen/rotenburo. Guests are mostly foreigners, which makes it feel rather like a theme park. Unfortunately, the "over tourism" of Japan is reaching well beyond the usual hotspots.

We had such a wonderful time during our stay! The staff were incredibly kind and welcoming, and the dinner was absolutely fantastic. We loved every dish – beautifully presented and so delicious. I also got to enjoy a complimentary ume drink from the bar, which was a nice touch. The onsen experience was unforgettable, especially with the stunning outdoor view of the sea. I loved how they switched the male and female baths so everyone could enjoy it. This stay felt like stepping into a secret world, and I’ll never forget it. Thank you for an amazing experience!!!

Nakanoshima is a beautiful island with good onsen water, marred by this ryokan which serves spoiling food to their guests. For ¥37,000 per person a night you would expect fresh fish from the bay that we were in, but the restaurant will instantly transport you miles inland. On the menu was rotting sashimi, smelly shrimp, beef that tastes like they bought it at a discount from the supermarket, and at breakfast, salted fish that was stinky, and cold rice. The onsen itself was good, but the maintenance was very poor. The double-storey onsen featured in magazines was available to women between 3pm-12 midnight, then to men the next day only from 6am-10am. The room had an uncomfortable massage chair, and 1 armchair. Another armchair was requested for but was unavailable. The humidifier in the room was out of order. If you stay here you won’t be able to relax or eat. Best for people on a diet.
