On the Grid : Naked City

"There’s some serious attitude to be found here, a shop that looks like it’s decorated for Halloween, all year long. In a good way, not like Spencers or Hot Topic. The clothes, shoes, and accessories here, mostly for women, have a lot more vintage funk than mall teen angst. Go punk, retro, rockabilly, or pick up some fun lingerie. Or come back around for Halloween and get set up with a great costume." - Kevin M. Fitzgerald

I always have a positive experience here! They have a great selection of items even for men even though that isn't their primary target, and awesome things for gifts! Julien (sorry if I spelled that wrong) is always super friendly and knowledgeable. Overall a great business!

Google
Super cool store!! Pin up to the max and also cute like monster and goth fashion too. Cute shoes. Cute dresses. Some of the dresses go up to 1X but mostly just size 16 on most things. Over all amazing. Lots of fun costume or day to day wear. Will 100% come back. Also not super expensive like I was expecting. Love this store. Store owner is nice as well. She's adorable too. Lots of monster movie posters. Has that rock-a-billy feel all the way.

Bought my wife a gift card here. Had to come in before we head out for viva as vegas for a new dress and romper. Love this place, and those who work here are amazing

Rad vibe with very reasonable prices. Plus Julian is the coolest. Can't recommend enough! 💕

I cannot say enough wonderful things about this store! I discovered this place about a year ago, when I first arrived to Portland. The owner, Julian, is as kind as she is helpful without ever being pushy. Her trusty and stylish assistant, Chloe is also sweet and gives the best 2nd opinions. The assortment of fun, neuvo-retro, punk and gothic/gothabilly clothes are somehow simultaneously edgy and classic. Additionally, all of the accessories are curated to compliment anything you might choose to wear. There really is something for everyone, too. I shop exclusively at Naked City. Tell 'em Deb sent you!

Google
This long time small business is great! Staff and ownership are friendly and helpful. The store is overflowing with punk, goth, and rock-n-roll shirts, pins, patches, dresses, shoes, skirts, and tops. Not to mention the fun kitschy things like books, finger puppets, earrings, and other accessories that make awesome gifts!

Kaycee Bassett

Google
Such a cute spooky little shop! Unfortunately they didn’t have the size I needed for the dress that I wanted the most, however I did find lots of other great items and trinkets! Definitely recommend checking it out.

Google
I ordered a dress online that I wanted to wear for NYE and I emailed explaining how I needed it expedited but didn't have that option when ordering. Julian was so quick and helpful and got everything sorted for me and my dress arrived just in time. It was beautiful and got so many compliments. A girl in the bathroom even started following the store instagram because of it.

Yelp
A Portland gem!!! NC remains ever consistent with offering the most unique and well made items for those who love film, music and all things that go bump in the night. From garments and gadgets to patches and posters there's something special here for everyone. A thoughtfully curated selection is an understatement. NC works directly and closely with the brands they carry and it's those kind of relationships that set shopping at NC apart. They know every style, stitch and story behind literally everything in the joint. Plus they manage to keep their prices in a range that fits all types of budgets. (I imagine they probably don't order certain items because they'd come with a hefty price tag. Talk about considerate!) It's for these reasons that it's especially important to acknowledge and support businesses like Naked City. PS. I live in PDX, but their website is so easy to shop that I opted to by a piece online for free local pickup. It was ready before the charge hit my bank account. I also picked up a few things in store. Thanks again team!

Yelp
This store is an awesome stop if you're looking for patches and enamel pins. They have three large cases towards the back that rotate (cool!) and have a wide selection. Many are from classic horror movies or just general spooky kind of things. Prices are pretty reasonable for being licensed stuff. They also have some clothing and jewelry, etc. they have clothes for both masculine and feminine but most of the clothes I saw lean more towards the feminine side. Overall it's a cool little shop and always a stop I make when in Portland. This visit the women working were super friendly and took care of us quickly. They also have a rocket ship by the doors for $.25 you can get a little trinket. We got an alien and a fake mustache. Cute stuff!

Yelp
T shirt shipped very fast, material is thick cotton and should last a long time......

Yelp
Retro + Rocky Horror + 40's/50's fashion and cult clothing and accessories. Fantastic customer service! The owner is a doll. Great recommendations and doesn't just chat up the pricey items. Nice clearance rack outside. Items in the store itself range from $12-40 in average. The quality of the clothing is better than most other sips of this nature. Plus, the music in the background is rockin'.

Yelp
I came in here for the first time on a mission looking for clothes for an event I was going to. This place came up on multiple searches of "Best of Portland" for the Hawthorne area and I remembered how many times I walked by the store (but never went in) when they were in their previous location on Hawthorne. So, it felt like fate. I had to go. After all, I was on a serious mission! I generally don't love clothes shopping because I can't find things I like enough to buy, or the things I do like don't fit properly. Yet, I came out of here with a 50's style skirt, 60's style pop art tank, a pop art sundress, two mid torso fitted cardigans, another sundress, a necklace, and two pair of earrings. All of it came out to much less money than anticipated and everything is very unique and my style. Also, the owner who has short brown hair was super attentive and provided excellent customer service. The whole experience made my entire weekend! I can't wait to go back!

Yelp
We loved Naked City, which sells clothes accessories and ephemera for the counterculture kids. Plenty of rocker, punk, rockabilly, pin-up and kitsch wares, and everything weird and wacky inbetween. The front of the store is mostly clothes and there's lingerie and costumes in the back. I loved all their crazy graphic tees and Elvira merchandise. Naked City Clothing was probably my favorite clothing shop in Portland and I'll definitely go again the next time I'm in town.

Yelp
Naked City Clothing is a cute, kitschy little clothing botique that I really enjoyed going into recently! They have lots of adorable little "neo noir" type dresses here for the ladies which really adds the place some charm! They have clothes for men too, mostly screen print t-shirts but they were really cool! There is a host of other things here too. Shoes, masks, hats, cards and knick knacks. It definitely compliments Portland's quirkiness!

Yelp
EEEEEEEKKK!!!!. THIS IS THE BEST PLACE EVER!! I LOVE their selection, they have so many unique things in this store!. It seems like a small footprint of a store but the amount of different pieces they have in there is impressive!!. The woman with the short dark hair that works in the mornings is AWESOME!. I love to support local businesses like this one and I will shop here until the day I die if possible.

Yelp
Naked City is an oasis of BAMMM amid the desert of "same ole." Midway through my grande gauntlet of shopping on Hawthorne BLVD, Naked City is a must stop any time I'm in the hood. They have a really unique twist on the Portland boutique. They offer pin-up 1950s style lingerie and swimsuits, same era dresses and clothing, goth jewelry and tshirts, and a great selection of sunglasses and clearance shoes. They always have a $10 dolla HOLLA rack outside too. The service is impeccable, the prices are reasonable and they always have a really unique collection of items you won't find anywhere else.

Yelp
Naked City rocks! I stopped in here on NYE needing a couple last minute accessories for my costume. Naked City delivered when Red Light booted us out for closing at 6pm. Thanks for staying open! They had exactly what I needed (white fishnets and a shrug) to complement my outfit. In addition, my boyfriend found an awesome leather belt - the kind you can change the buckle on - for only $16.50. There are lots of deals to be had if you are looking for unique, punk-ish, costumey items and accessories. I'll definitely be back to check it out when we come back to Portland.

Yelp
This place is so cool! I was looking for an alternative to ModCloth (twice got a bad quality product and owned by Wal-Mart. No thanks!) I'm a size 12/14 and was a bit worried I wouldn't find something wouldn't fit, but I was so gloriously wrong. I wanted a new outfit for a party and not only found the most gorgeous black dress with velvet accent, but also some great chunky statement jewelry to go with it. The shop is super friendly and helped me decide on a look since I'm a bit fashion-stunted. I liked it so much I came back the next day with a friend! I love the vintage and retro looks with often times cool, cute, or creepy aesthetic. I can find interesting accents that would be difficult online (especially since creepy/goth brands love featuring clothes on rail thin models which does not help someone like me). I'm so excited to keep going back and see what they stock! Also their clearance racks are AWESOME.

Yelp
Naked City is great! The button wall and patch display case are my favorite things to look at & they have so many cute clothes and accessories! PRO TIP: I always check out the SALE rack because I've found so much good stuff there!

Yelp
I read through all of these reviews, and as a longtime Naked City shopper, I have some things to say. First off, the staff there are actually pretty nice. I don't know why people think they are not "cool enough" to shop there, based on staff attitudes. Just because they don't give you a million watt smile and talk your ear off the whole time you're there doesn't meant they aren't friendly. I always have a good time chatting them up and they always give me really good feeback on clothes I'm trying on, if I ask for it. Secondly, maybe compared to Goodwill they are pricey. They have some expensive stuff there but it will last you much MUCH longer than Walmart clothes. They won't stretch and become baggy an hour after pulling them out of the dryer. They won't fade as fast or get little pin holes in them from wear. It's simply good quality and honestly their prices are very competitive when looking at places like pinupgirlclothing.com (of which I am also a shopper). They have stuff to fit every budget. I am not wealthy by any means but I never leave there empty handed and always feel like I got my money's worth. And occasionally I'll save up my dollars and splurge on something really nice for myself. Thirdly, I have no idea why people are calling this place "hipster". I classify it as pinup/rockabilly/psychobilly mostly. There are some skinny jeans and neon sunglasses there but it's definitely not hipster. So those of you who are scared of hipster joints, feel free to go in. I pretty much love NC with all my heart. You guys are awesome, keep doing what you are doing and I'll keep spending my hard earned money there. Shop local!

Yelp
A: I'm not cool enough for porland 2: I'm not rich enough for this shop. D: I still love it so so much.

Yelp
After spending a good portion of my Saturday afternoon wandering in and out of a multitude of stores filled with racks of bohemian chic clothes (great in theory, but when I put them on I feel like a potato sack with legs), I was getting frustrated. Where are the worn-in, form-fitting jeans, the tight black shirts, the thigh high boots, funky belt buckles, the polka dot dresses, the peep toe heels, the perfect black hoodies? "Excuse me sir? Can you please point me in the direction of a store that sells rocknroll clothes?" I asked the salesman behind the counter. To my surprise he smiled and, without hesitation, gave me directions to Naked City. So happy. Lots of black tees with cool designs ($20-$30), killer cardigans and hoodies that I haven't seen anywhere else ($40-$60), accessories (jewelry, purses, belts, hats) that will elevate the plain tee/jean outfit into something suitable for a show, shoes that my feet begged me to buy, and dresses that ranged from Rockabilly Chick to Rock of Love Groupie. The denim selection was a bit sparse...but then again I'm one picky bitch about my jeans. The staff is sweet without being pushy, and all have an individual style that makes you want to shop where they shop (always a plus for me). While I do find some of the pieces too trendy or a tad too pricey, it's nearly impossible for me to leave Naked City without buying at least a few things.

Adrienne A.

Yelp
Confession: I am not this stores niche market. I think of this store as grown-ups hot topic. Think rockabilly, pin-up, and kitschy accessories. Nothing wrong with any of those things, just not my thing. I'll be honest that the first few times I passed the store I thought it was a costume store or some weird vinyl/latex dress selling store. I will say that while I cant say I love the store I do love that they cast a wide net for people who dont want to follow the "traditional" and boring fashion trends.

Yelp
I've been to Naked City a couple of times--it doesn't seem too expensive to me. I mean, it's not like Forever 21 dirt cheap or anything either, but I walked out of there today with a winter coat, boots, and gloves for under $100. My only complaint was that one of the buttons on the coat already came off... within hours. And another is already starting to go. Bleh. Other time I went, I got a shirt for $10. Still in good shape, still wear it, months later. Employees didn't seem super jubilant or chatty or anything, but I think I preferred that anyway.

Tory M.

Yelp
Ah, Naked City, how I missed you till I found you again, so far out of the way now, but I will continue to visit. The Bettie Page shoes: sublime. The clothing: perfect. The jewelry: inexpensive and perfect as a pick-me up. The things that keep it from being a 5? The customer service is...less than awesome. It's great to have free rein while shopping, but I am regularly ignored. I am a middle aged woman, not a "counterculture goddess" but it would be nice if when I asked if something could be ordered, and would they call me, they had. When my 19 year old college cool girl comes in, they are attentive to her, even though I am paying for her. Not cool at all.
google avatar

Madeline F.

Yelp
Went to this store because it was the first thing that popped up when I was looking for a fun patches for a jumpsuit I hope to decorate. I was definitely impressed by their selection as they had two rotating racks of patches and if you're into buttons they had a ton of those and magnets as well up on their walls. I found some spooky patches and some more girly ones and also ended up picking up a beanie and some socks for stocking stuffers. I would definitely recommend this place if you're a fan of Hot Topic, Kreepsville 666, Sourpuss, or similar brands that mesh retro pin up style with punk and goth culture. They had so many dresses, tees, tights, sale items and other stuff to check out I would definitely recommend a visit here.

Yelp
I venture into this shop very little, and up until recently had had rather poor experiences... Prior to my most recent visit, I had rarely been greeted when walking in the door, and if I ventured a "Hello" myself, I would get a rather snobbish "Hi" from the person working. But in recent visits, the tone has changed slightly, and employees seem to be a bit more chipper, making for a much more pleasant shopping experience. As for the shop itself, it's small, and quite packed. It's brightly lit, which is nice, and full of all sorts of goodies, from great rockabilly dresses, to t-shirts featuring favorites such as Dracula and Vampira as well as wonderful odds and ends for the house, including hearse floormats. There's jewelry and purses, and belt buckles. You could seriously overhaul your entire wardrobe here if you wanted to go in a rockabilly/psychobilly direction. The place has BOTH mens and womens, but more stock is allocated towards the gals. Prices vary, and they all depend upon the brand itself. The carry Bernie Dexter items, which are on the pricey side, but her stuff is made in the US, which is nice, and they also carry items from Pin-Up Girl Clothing. But don't expect the entire selection of either company's stock, it is very, very selective. At Halloween, they offer up fun and unique costumes.
google avatar

Meredith R.

Yelp
Awesome selection of alternative and rockabilly clothes and accessories. Has plus sized stuff as well. Not cheap, but if you want something unique, it's well worth the money. Excellent staff as well.
google avatar

Kiera H.

Yelp
For years I walked by this store and never went in. I don't know why but I thought it was going to be reminiscent of Hot Topic. I was so very wrong. They have dickies shorts and skirts for girls, sexy lingerie, some shoes that happen to be cheap and vegan (not quality in vegan, just shoes that happen to be vegan because they are too cheap to be leather), the Bettie Page brand dresses that I can only look at and not afford, accessories, socks, SO MANY THINGS in one place that I want to buy! The people that work there are friendly and non-pretentious. I will be going back. frequently. And if someone would give me a job, I would buy a really cute dress to buy with the vegan fluevog shoes that I also really want and my life would be perfect.
google avatar

Crystal R.

Yelp
Stopped in and we found A LOT of really cute clothes here without paying an arm and a leg. I also love how it was all organized by color which really helps to speed up your search.
google avatar

André E.

Yelp
If you're looking for rockabilly gear you've found your place. From Clash items, little sun dresses with bats on it, to band aids with images of mustaches on them this place has all kinds of fun stuff to check out. Didn't look to long because it was about time to eat, but I'd definitely come back if I was in Portland.
google avatar

Julie B.

Yelp
so I just got back from portland, OR and I love it there....Keep Oregon wierd was their motto and that's awesome! This place defently helps the motto. At first I was looking for bigger girl clothes and for some reason yelp pooped out this one...I love this place! BUT it is not for big girl clothes but it all made me want to lose tons of weight so I could buy one of everything =) I live in San Diego and it's hard to find rockabilly or punk goth big girl stuff unless it's torrid. (overpriced) so I got excited but alass the biggest it went was 1x and I don't even think it was a real 1x...but it isn't the shop's fault, yelp got me exicted. For something cool go here!
google avatar

amii c.

Yelp
Found some great deals here: A long black button up sweater cut in a vintage style for $17 A zipper make up bag printed all over with old-school radios for $6.50 Little alligator hairclips with aqua, green, and yellow bows for $1 each Not everything here is that cheap, but hunting was rewarded with very decent prices. Also enjoyed the variety of styles represented here.

Yelp
I LOVE Naked City. Great selection, great prices (on a lot of things) and awesome staff. It seems like the owner really buys things to appeal to a wide range of stylistas. You can get super cute Dickies stuff there, but also get more tailored selections from smaller designers. Some of the stuff there is expensive, but if you know clothing you will know that the more spendy stuff is either handmade or made by a tiny company with a staff of about 5 people. There is also the question of quality- in other words, you get what you pay for. This is by far my favorite store in Portland, and is my go-to place when I need something cute for a special occasion. Also a great place to take shopping buddies from out-of-town!

Natassia H.

Yelp
Lots of great reasonably priced stuff. TONS of patches and accessories, as well as vintage repro clothing for men and women. Cool purses, jewelry, housewares and posters.

Suzy M.

Yelp
Who are the people saying Naked City is expensive? Where do you normally shop? Fred Meyer? Take a trip to a real city and find out what clothing costs. I love this shop for having cute basic items (skirts, jeans, hats, boots, flats, heels, tees) in the boyish, tight style I love. The accessories are fun, the toys are irresistible, and so what if the teenagers working there are bitches? They're teenagers. Get over it. You're probably annoying. Go back to Urban Outfitters and pay triple to have brainwashed robots chirp inanely at you. Love you Naked City, please never stop selling the deadstock sunglasses and fingerless leather motorcycle gloves!!
google avatar

Shila B.

Yelp
I love the clothes since it is stuff that I would wear: Alternative, goth and steam punk. The prices compared to where I come from are very very reasonable, however, here is where it falls flat....their customer service. It was not polite but it wasn't rude either. They seem to be lacking in general people skills which was an immediate turn off to buy what I really wanted that I just got at another store a few blocks down.
google avatar

Heather S.

Yelp
Naked City has everything a guy or gal -- mostly skinny -- might want. Skinny jeans, Dickies jeans and pants, skirts and cute Bettie Page brand dresses, shoes on sale -- just got an adorable pair of Rocket Dogs for $25! -- rockabilly plaid shirts for girls (we got 3) for really reasonable prices, a plethora of belts of all sizes, and, cool handmade necklaces and wallets. I LOVE this store. Now, only if I can lose some weight to fit into those skinny jeans... ;)
google avatar

Candice Z.

Yelp
This shop is the coolest! Whether you're looking for a fun, flirty, or funky dress, they'll have something for you. The prices are a bit steep for me, but all the dresses were really cute and well made so I can see why they were a bit pricier. All the gals who work here are also super nice and helpful. If I could I'd probably have my whole summer wardrobe be from Naked City!
google avatar

Abby M.

Yelp
If you like Forever 21 (or as I call it, Forever 35), but enough a little more punk rock in your world, this is your store. Trendy, not too expensive, but more than F 21. I still have that "cool factor" thing happening when I walk in, but that's not their fault. I never claimed to be a hipster.
google avatar

Kate F.

Yelp
If you're looking to dress like a hipster and don't want to spend a lot of cash, head on over to Naked City. They sell a pretty nice array of clothing for the young and hip, and it's possible to find something really cool without having to blow your paycheck. The quality of the items isn't so great; the few things I've bought from them are already pilling, coming apart at the seams or losing their shape. But if you're careful and you're not looking for stuff to wear all the time, or are just starting out in dressing like you're cooler than everyone else. this place should be just fine.
google avatar

Tasia L.

Yelp
Amazing little shop cute stuff at a decent price. One of the only rockabilly shops I've seen in the area so far. Pretty decently priced. The ladies working are helpful and sweet. :)
google avatar

Danika A.

Yelp
One of my favorite shops in Portland. Sometimes I think the price is higher than the quality of the product, but most of the time its very decent. The only con I think I find in the shop is that occasionally I feel like the ladies behind the counter are grumpy, but then again maybe they're just hung over like everyone else in Portland!
google avatar

Svetlana S.

Yelp
A little edgy for my taste, but oh my gosh do they have a lot of fun vintage style clothing! It was the middle of winter, and I found my new favorite polka dotted swimsuit for next summer! If there was one store I wish I could take home with me, it would be this one. I had a blast checking out their merchandise. So many cute dresses, skirts, shorts, tops to pick from. Sexy stockings and accessories. I can't wait for my next visit!
google avatar

Barbara L.

Yelp
I was here in August while the city street fair was on this block. They had a major sale rack outside and great items inside. The staff was friendly and now with Tatyana store gone they are the only real option for rockabilly dresses. The store is cute and has wonderful items. It was a lot of fun and I found some cool stuff. Stop to see these ladies and try on items that make you feel like a woman!!
google avatar

BoaBzOr B.

Yelp
I like this store because it actually stocks clothing sizes that are larger than teeny tiny. I wouldn't say that it seriously caters to seriously plus size, but if you are an average sized woman in the 12-14-16-18 range, you might be pleasantly surprised at what you can find here.

Jane M.

Yelp
It's my go-to place for anything rockabilly, horror or pin-up. Plus it's just fun. Plenty of American-made brands to be found. But not the gross hipster Mom-jeans in American Apparel, or any of that tacky 80's crap. These finds are classy cocktail dresses, comfortable miniskirts, leggings, stockings and shirts. Some of the lingerie can be pricey, but you have to expect that for handmade, sweatshop-free finds. Everything I've bought there is cute, durable and unique, and well priced. The sales can't be beat. Jewelry for $1, posters for $3, and tons of clothing for $10. I filter through regularly just to check the sale racks. I try to help relieve the inventory just to see what the next shipment will contain.
google avatar

Katie G.

Yelp
I managed to make room in my suitcase for a couple of items from this shop when I visited it on a weekend trip to Portland. Now, that says a lot! Cute selection, and the staff is nice. Wish it wasn't as expensive! ;)
google avatar

Tracey G.

Yelp
Hands down, my favorite clothing shop in Portland. I discovered it when I got my discount card for being part of RCR, and have been completely obsessed ever. The first night I actually shopped there I ended up being in the shop for like three hours trying stuff on and they could not have been nicer or more accommodating. And as far as people saying it's expensive, I completely disagree. I think I spent about $250 that night and left with something like 14 items including two dresses, three pairs of pants, two skirts, four tops, tights, a couple of ties, etc. I was blown away by how much I got for that amount.
google avatar

Andrea V.

Yelp
In a word, awesome. If you like goth, punk, glam, rockabilly, or just plain retro-chic clothing, this is the place to go. Plenty of sizes (though maybe difficult to find above an 18), different but flattering styles, and kick ass prints. The woman who was working was very helpful and friendly. If I lived in Portland, I could see myself coming here again and again. Keep on keepin' on, Naked City.
google avatar

Brenna S.

Yelp
This is easily one of my fave clothing botiques in Portland. They are constantly getting new clothing in, so no matter how much you like to shop, there are always new thing to try on there! They are also quite original in their selections as I almost never see the same clothing at any other botiques in town. All of the gals that work there are very helpful and friendly, and are always great with fashion advice! A couple of the lines they carry are a tad expensive, but the overall selection is definitely nice to your wallet. They are also "the place" to find cute, cheap heels and flats.

Leah B.

Yelp
I ALWAYS stop here when i hit portland's Hawthorne street. The owner (i think?), red headed gal, is SUPER helpful with any questions you have. The prices are really reasonable. Sometimes they hold onto inventory for quite a while, but i usually find something i have to have each time i stop in. keep doin' what you're doin!
google avatar

Brandy S.

Yelp
While I hardly ever buy anything from Naked City (it is a bit too expensive for me). I am coveting about half of the store's contents. Cute shoes, purses, and clothes.

Ashli E.

Yelp
I love Naked City! Most of the reviews here I feel are completely not fair, but I will try not to be biased. I also have a couple Blueberry Vodkas and Soda in me soooooo...Yes, they are too expensive for what I usually buy. I mean, when I shop I can't buy one item at normal store cost, unless it's a dress. So that's why I buy in bulk at cheap stores and goodwill. But STILL this store is so fun to even flip through. They have AWESOME shoe sales if you can find the shoe in your size(look under the clothes along the wall)...and now I'm distracted. Check out the stuff on the top of the racks. RETRO! They have general stylish jackets and dresses even if you don't like retro and don't know who Bettie Page is. LOLZ at you for not though.

Yelp
Love! We spent about an hour in there and left with a ton of awesome stuff and barely broke $100. The owner is super cool and very friendly. Great selection of "pork" products like cool patches and tshirts. Love this place!

Yelp
I've always loved this store and have found some of the cutest stuff here. Recently I was in looking for a birthday dress and the girl helping me was awesome. She was super friendly and knowledgable and knew exactly what dresses to give me that would accentuate my curves and give me what I was looking for. She wasn't pushy at all and made wonderful suggestions. I ended up buying a insanely sexy black pinup style dress and even snagged some sunglasses ($10!) while I was there! This store is a must do if shopping on Hawthorne! Love it!
