When Publix's Memorial Drive location closed, I was in extreme denial. I went there the last day they were open and it was packed to the gills with customers, and I thought, "Surely a manager is watching this right now, and he'll call corporate and they'll answer the big red emergency phone and then hit the ABORT button and business will be back to usual." But nope! They actually closed! It hurt my feelings because it seemed like Publix only wanted to be in fancy neighborhoods and I'm a little too low-rent for them. Well, Nam Dae Mun is here and I can confidently give a big middle finger to Publix because I don't need them anymore.
I've been to NDM twice in as many days, and I think I'm in love. They somehow managed to cram a million kinds of things into one tiny former-Publix. I'd read reviews of some of the other locations to get a feel for what to expect, and I was sure it'd be adequate but not great. I figured I'd have to supplement with trips to other stores, but would support NDM since it was so close just like I do with Thriftown. But after visiting, I don't know if I ever need to go to another grocery store. (Okay that's not true, Costco is my boyfriend and we'll never break up EVER but it's kind of in a league of its own)
When you first walk in, there is definitely a pungent odor. Other YDFM and Buford Hwy shoppers know the smell, but I think it's a liiiiiittle bit stronger here. After your nose settles down, your eyes are assaulted by ALL THE FRUITS. There are also bulk herbs, spices, candy, and nuts. There are live crabs, and an insane variety of seafood. There's a cookware aisle that even displays car mats and rice cookers. There's a small aisle filled with ramen! There are Jamaican staples, Thai ingredients, Mexican specialties, and pretty much any other kind of food you would ever need. The freezer aisles offer kimchi fried rice alongside DiGiorno pizza. There were yogurt brands I've never heard of, and fancy cheeses I can't wait to try. They had Ben & Jerry's, and fresh-baked breads. There was even a tiny food court! It appeared to be just one counter, but they had hamburgers and fried rice (and probably other things too!).
The other shoppers were all as goggle-eyed as I was, but everyone's cart was pretty full. I will no longer need to order henna from Amazon, or make a trip to Buford Hwy for pierogies and gyoza. On the way out, there was a receipt checker who gave us a free package of paper towels for spending over $50, and every single employee we encountered was extremely friendly. The only drawbacks (besides the smell) were that we saw a whole goat in the freezer section that expired back in June, and we got some ground beef that wasn't super great-looking. But I'm not in the market for a whole goat, and we can grind our own beef!
I don't hate Publix for making what they thought was a sound business decision, but I kind of hope they regret leaving us. If I need White Mountain bread I can still go to Shamrock plaza, but for my every day gotta-run-to-the-store needs, I'm definitely going to Nam Dae Mun.
