My fabulous MIL and I have been able to get together a little more frequently. I got to introduce her to Dehli 6 at Highland Village for her first Indian food excursion. This time, we were closer to her house so she researched a top rated place for this cuisine. We arrived later than normal, around 130p on a Saturday and were lucky to have the entire place to ourselves.
My MIL is allergic to straight dairy, cheese, milk, etc. but is ok with it baked into a dish. Still, it was very nice that a kind lady from the kitchen came out to verify the extent of her allergy. She's had Tandoori chicken before and that is marinated in yogurt - so we stayed to give it a try.
No samosas in sight but the place was also Nepalese as well. So, we ordered fried "mo-mo's" (think chicken dumplings) to start. It came out with a spicy, dark red chili sauce and a yellow sauce. They were excellent! There were 8 of them, so I ate one just to try it. Then, we ordered chicken biryani (think fried rice) and a Thali special with mutton, yellow lentils, black eyed peas w potatoes, sauteed greens, salad and a pile of Basmati rice smack in the middle of the dish! If there is a Thali special at an Indian restaurant, THIS is what you want to try to order because you get small dishes to taste.
Holy Himilayas! The chicken biryani came out on a big plate, piled high. We could have just split it. Then the Thali came out and it was so pretty. Beautifully plated. My MIL surprised me by wanting to try the mutton. They did not have lamb on the menu.. so next best thing. The mutton was very tasty but not a lot of meat and you had to deal w the bones. We shared both dishes! The Thali came with fried potatoes and a dessert as well. The dessert is a fried, donut hole sized ball of ricotta, covered in syrup. I didn't care for that but I don't typically order desserts. It had the consistency of a bundt cake, covered in syrup.
The only thing that could've made the experience better is playing Bollywood on the TV or some Bollywood music for a total immersive feel. Either way, we had enough to fill up TWO big containers with leftovers for each of us. I have had 2 meals off of what we had already - and enough for lunch again. I'm a sucker for good food.
So, what are you waiting for? Go there. Get some. Grab your MIL or another adventurous foodie! Life is too short for boring food - or conversation for that matter :) and don't miss out on this gem. The portions are generous and you're going to have plenty of leftovers for 2-3 more meals!
