First thing's first: let me state that I am a volunteer for Nana and Papa's Nest, so my perspective will be from someone on the "inside". When I first started a little over a year ago, I was amazed at how much Ms. Dolly knew about parrots. She made it very clear that this was not a pet store, and that many of the birds suffered from neglect, abuse, or abandonment. Fast forward to this June, and I approached my parents with the unthinkable: I wanted to foster one of the parrots. I chose to foster Fernando, a greenwing macaw who feel into a deep depression after his owner died. When Fernando first arrived at the rescue, he refused to leave his cage or talk. But with hard work, determination, and a lot of love, Fernando gradually broke out of his shell. With the guidance of Ms. Dolly, Fernando blossomed under foster care and was adopted on September 26, 2020. I don't regret bringing him home, I don't regret giving him a second chance. Sure you can easily buy a bird from a pet store, that's where most of our residents came from. But at the Nest, we're all about second chances. Our birds aren't perfect, they have issues, they've been through unimaginable trauma. But that's why we love them, and that's why I love my Nando bird ❤
