9 Affordable Private Island Resorts Around the World

"Not one but three private islands linked by white sandbars make up this serene, budget-friendly resort in the Gulf of Thailand. Fifty-six bungalows and villas complete with private bathrooms and porches (some overlooking the ocean) deliver modern-day amenities. A casual waterfront eatery, a coffee shop, and a beach bar complement the resort's facilities. As its name suggests, the property specializes in diving tours and classes, making it a paradise both for experienced divers and beginners interested in exploring the vibrant marine life in the area. Another reason to stay here? The property offers discounted rates for divers. Nightly rates from $89, nangyuan.com" - Travel + Leisure Editors

Fantastic location with great views from our bungalow right above the spectacular Nangyuan beach. Great for divers with excellent walk in dive sites straight from the beach. Busy in day time with visitors from Koh Tao and Koh Samui, but when they had left we had the island for ourselves. Recommend night dives from the beach after sunset for this reason and after the diving you can relax at the resort restaurant without the crowds.

This island is beautiful but the “hotel” does not come remotely close to being nice or in line with the beauty of the island. Air con in the accommodation wasn’t working which made trying to sleep impossible for 2 nights. There were not enough snorkels for us on the day we arrived so we couldn’t snorkel after all of the day visitors left and then we only managed to get a final set for our party mid afternoon on the next day. The restaurant is not brilliant - on both nights we had our meals all served at different times, one 25 minutes after the others in our party had finished!!! The island is lovely but the stay was not - very disappointing indeed.

Full of dead coral and we both got food poisoning. We paid of we £1000 for 3 nights . Food limited and expensive. The owner is destroying this place with tourists . We wouldn’t come back

A stunningly beautiful island - just like in the photos - so definitely worth a trip. ||The hotel, however, is poor - the rooms aren’t clean; furniture is stained and worn; the air-conditioning works only intermittently, so the rooms are unbearably hot overnight; the restaurants are limited, particularly if staying for more than 2 nights; the wifi isn’t great. ||On the positive side, the staff are lovely - very friendly and helpful.||Day visitors (lots of them) are allowed on the island from 10-3. It’s wonderfully peaceful to experience the island and snorkelling/diving outside of those hours - but you’re then committed to an overnight stay, so that’s the compromise.

Once the day trippers have gone this place is magical. The resort can accommodate up to 60 guests so you can still feel like you have the place to yourselves. It would be great if they had a broom in your room to sweep away the sand or a water bath near the stairs to wash the sand off.

I'm not sure why people write negative reviews about this Island. For me this island is must visit if you're going to Koh Tao. Just 10 minutes by ferry from Koh Tao lies a little slice of heaven called Koh Nang Yuan. By day, it's buzzing with tourists chasing the famous sandbar views, but the real magic begins after 4 pm when the boats leave. If you choose to stay overnight, the entire island feels like it belongs to you — quiet, serene, and unbelievably beautiful. There are two boats that will take you free of cost to the island from Sairee Beach at 10.30 AM and 3.30 PM. If the rooms are available they'll provide early checkin. We were lucky in that matter. The staff is quite helpful. You also have a return ferry at 8.30 AM and 1 PM. The sunset here was the most beautiful I've witnessed. Waking up here is an experience in itself... early mornings bring baby sharks swimming right along the shore 🦈, The sharks are shy if you try to swim towards them. You should stay near the shore to see them, and as the sun rises, the water turns into a crystal-clear paradise perfect for snorkeling 🐠. A short 10-min trek and you'll get to see the splendid view of the island. Note if your rooms are up the hill there is a shortcut. Spend your day soaking in the sun, walking barefoot on the soft sand, and letting time slow down to island rhythm. Koh Nang Yuan isn't just a place you visit, it's a place you feel — a once-in-a-lifetime kind of paradise.

Amazing place after 3pm and before 10 am Good food- great service Expensive fore Thailand but logistics is hard and the island is self supplied with power ect. Well worth it. Great snorkeling and sharks in the morning (west beach)🏝️ Transportation is via Koh Tao and included in the resort fee

Beautiful island, but horrible hotel. Terrible service. At night, rats come out on the island — they have nests in the roofs of the bungalows, so it’s impossible to sleep because of the noise and squeaking they make. The room smelled damp and musty. We went for dinner at the restaurant at the top (supposedly the nicest one), they brought us the first course and then completely forgot the second, eventually telling us the kitchen was already closed. The island is surely worth seeing, but unless things change, surely avoid staying at the hotel. To apologize, they gave us a 40% discount on dinner — surely not enough for the night we had.
