A "Readaway" in Nantucket's Off-Season | Condé Nast Traveler

"Located in the heart of town and in operation since 1972, the independent Nantucket Bookworks sits directly beneath my rental; when I couldn't find Moby Dick on the loft's shelves, the bookstore downstairs had a copy for me to take home." - Jessica Sulima

This was our first time in Nantucket Bookworks. What an amazing, cozy bookstore in Nantucket with great book finds! They didn’t have the book I was looking for but it didn’t stop me from getting another. My daughter was able to find a few arts + crafts accessories so they do have a nice products assortment. I would definitely want to come back on our next trip here! Also check out their sister store, Mitchell’s Corner, another cute space.

Google
Easily my favorite store on the island! I’m consistently mind blown by how carefully and creatively the store is curated, and equally mind blown by how sweet and helpful each and every employee is! Consider yourself lucky if you get to wander around here ♥️

Google
This has to be one of my top ten favorite bookstores, here is why: 1. The location is where the action is downtown. It’s easily accessible and in a beautiful location surrounded by shops and restaurants. So, get a book and get some coffee down the block. 2. The atmosphere and decor/design is thoughtful and enjoyable to spend time in. The space is clean and well put together. It’s one of those spaces that draws you in and makes you want to stay. 3. Great selection of products! Books and other items including a large chocolate selection located in the back of the store. 4. One of the most amazing kid sections I’ve seen in a bookstore. The space was designed for and is inviting for children. Huge win for parents coming to visit that want to look for a book for everyone. 5. Friendly staff! I uploaded a bunch of images so you can get a sense of the space. Check them out! Nantucket bookworks is highly recommended.

I fell in love with Nantucket Bookworks the first time I was on the island back in 1980. Its slanted, uneven, wooden floors and wooden bookshelves reminded me of the library in the town where I grew up. The fact that it was open until nine or 10 every night totally amazed me and I spent many hours there. I come to the Island 4 times a year and the first place I go the very next morning is Bookworks. It has seen some changes and it's now slightly updated, but not enough to change its character. The staff there is absolutely amazing; they are so helpful. In addition to having most any book you could want, they have the most adorable children's section and the most delicious chocolate section, curated by the wonderful Suzanne Bennett, who searches the world for the most wonderful and unusual chocolate products. Can't wait to see the fantastic Christmas decorations that will be in the shop when I arrive in a couple of weeks. Shirley Murtha

This Place is a must visit when on Nantucket. An amazing little bookstore with lots for kids and adults alike. Amazing staff who are always happy to help you pick out the gift , be it chocolate , activities for kids or just that amazing fireside read you have been looking for.

Google
Come for the books, stay for the artisanal chocolates. The owner helped me solve a personal snafu and am extremely grateful for all the help. Wonderfully adorable book shop, will definitely be back.

Google
Absolutely in love with Nantucket Bookworks! Cutest kid section I have seen in a book store. They have a great selection of chocolates, souvenirs and goods made by local artists.

Yelp
This is right next to Brotherhood of Thieves and we stopped in after lunch to check out the books and toys. They have a large assortment of toys, and we ended up with a big Jelly Cat for my daughter. The book selection is like that of a city, and of coure they've got an entire alcove just for Elin. Super friendly staff.

Yelp
Liked this place so much we visited twice while we were staying on the island. Staff was friendly and pointed me to the supply of some of the books displayed in the windows. They have a cute children's section. When we visited around Christmas time they had a small selection of ornaments. They also have a really nice selection of chocolate, including locally crafted bars that we really enjoyed. I also purchased a convenient and spacious tote which was really practical for Christmas shopping and a nice souvenir of our visit. Definitely look forward to returning here. Conveniently located right next to the Brotherhood as well!

Yelp
NANTUCKET BOOKWORKS is a cute, small yet mighty bookstore near the busiest part of town. It has a very cool children's book section and an equally cool young adults' book section, which are only eclipsed by the, wait for it,... CHOCOLATE SHOP IN THE BACK! The chocolate shop is like a short trip around the world with fancy chocolates from all over the world. I of course chose one that was made locally -- and it was creamy creamy creamy! The workers here are friendly and super helpful. There is a good selection of books and chocolates and souvenirs in a price range from cheap to I'm-treating-myself.

Yogamarc M.

Yelp
Kudos to the buyer of this wonderful bookstore. I told her last time I was in what an amazing job she does. Not only a great little bookstore but also full of special and very unique items from ornaments to paper, cards, candles, incense and an incredible selection of chocolate from all over the world. This is what separates the corporate beasts from the independent stores - it's all about curation by passionate people.

Yelp
I loved this store!! It was adorable, colorful, and had a lot of neat items, not just books.
google avatar

Tiffanie S.

Yelp
Love this place. Friendly staff and a great selection of books and local crafts. This is exactly the type of small business you should be supporting!

David P.

Yelp
This bookstore was a bright spot on our day in Nantucket. There was such an outstanding assortment of books.
google avatar

Yelp
Such a sweet bookstore. There is a treasure trove of gifts as well as a well curated display of books. The selection is staggering.

Yelp
Perhaps the woman who runs this bookstore should read a book on etiquette. This review is based on years of observation and considering we're in a pandemic you would think the people working here would be a little more appreciative of customers. Nope. Nasty. For years I've witnessed the woman behind the cash register snapping at people and just being plain rude. I don't think I've ever even heard her say "thank you" to customers or myself. I guess she sees it as she's doing us all a favor. I support small business whenever possible, but places like this make me grateful for online ordering. This all said if you're on the island looking for a book -- definitely go to Mitchell's on Main Street. PS: This is my first bad review I've ever written in my years of having Yelp. I don't take it lightly.

Pat G.

Yelp
I called them while walking downtown in Nantucket. I asked whether they had a book, which they did. I got there within 10 minutes and they already had the book behind the counter ready for me. This was all done in haste cuz I had a tour 5 minutes later.

Yelp
This is such a gem of a bookstore. Though it's small, it's packed with books and other items like candy, notebooks, stationary, accessories, etc. The overall feel of the store and staff were welcoming. I loved the display windows; they are beautiful! It's a good place to browse and I will definitely come back here on my next Nantucket stay!!
google avatar

Maria-Elena T.

Yelp
Lots of things in addition to books. Very small chargers, corkscrews, socks, water bottles cool party thing, etc. It's a totally fun store to browse even if you don't need a book! The place is a bit cramped though.
google avatar

Hegne G.

Yelp
Very cute book store, there is place to sit and read. Lot of different books and toys. Kids love that bookstore so much to explore. They also have very cute kids cafe there. I would definitely recommend to visit when you in neighborhood.

Yelp
I love most to all bookstores, but this one made me kind of sad and annoyed. This was next to Jared Coffin where I stayed and was my first stop after I checked in, but it left a bad feeling in me. First off, I came into the store and there were two ladies behind the register chit-chatting and gossiping loudly and being judgemental toward someone they knew on island. Didn't even acknowledged me! Whatever, I get it. It's a bookstore, not everyone comes in buys. But they kept going on and on gossiping I didn't even get a chance to ask about Nantucket books I could get for gifts (they did not have a good selection FYI). The ladies continued to chit-chat as I roamed the store to the point that I walked into what looked like their staff area and no one noticed. I did find a few things, $70+ worth of things! And guess what? The one of the ladies goes, "Looks like you'll need a bag, we charge for those." Now I'm stuck with a bag that I'm not happy supporting, but I'm going to get my $10's worth out of it. The only good I can say about this store is that they open late.

Hazel L.

Yelp
I saw some reviews saying that the person at the counter was rude, but she was very pleasant when I went. There is a big selection of books about the island as well as other small items like candy and jewelry. I bought some postcards and things didn't seem to be that expensive. Definitely worth it.

Ingrid R.

Yelp
I used to love Nantucket Bookworks and I have lovely memories of bringing my daughter into the store almost every day. But in the past few years whenever we'd visit the island and we ventured into the store the manager Suzanne has only been incredibly mean and rude. Suzanne you've been working there for over 33 years, maybe it's time to step away.

Yelp
I checked in with Yelp, spent the money they asked for and got their super awesome tote bag! My husband got an out of print shirt and I got a book about Nantucket. I really liked this cute little bookstore.

Yelp
Truly a disappointing experience on such a beautiful island. I went to this bookstore today, excited as a favorite local author is always raving about it. I was met at a sign and table at the front door that asked for customers to use hand sanitizer and ask permission to come in. I put hand sanitizer on and handed bottle to my boyfriend. I stood and waited as the woman behind the counter continued to carry on a conversation with a another woman. Not greeted, just ignored. The conversation they were having was offensive and quite disheartening in the middle of a pandemic speaking of anti vaccination themes and the woman behind the counter herself said she was not vaccinated for MMR ( measles mumps rubella). Again, still ignored while this private conversation went on. We then proceeded into the store keeping our distance from these individuals. Suddenly the woman behind the counter barked out "Sir did you use hand sanitizer" with a bottle in her hand. The woman she was speaking with admitted she "told on him" calling herself the hand sanitizer police. Well good thing she is not an officer of law as I handed him the bottle, he used it and placed it back on the table in the front when we first arrived. Perhaps if the woman behind the counter bothered to put attention she would know this. After defending us and explaining he used it when I handed it to him, I realized... I am a first line RN back on the mainland, both are find worked hard combatting covid 19, and continue to. I don't deserve to be ignored and then accused of not doing something that we would of course do. Offended and disturbed by the anti vaccination discussion we immediately turned around and left. Too bad we are here on the island for New Years and our anniversary and I was excited to pick up some books about the history and pictures of the island.

Yelp
I've never wished for 6 or even 7 stars as much as I did when I saw this named here... I love, love, love this funky little book shop. I would not be who I am had I not spent a lot of time and a lot of cash in this place... My love of books and obscure philosphy texts began right in this shop. And it's great for gifts too!

James C.

Yelp
Truly the nastiest bookstore I've ever been to. Staff is always surly and rude. They must think being awful to customers is a plus. Go to Mitchell's instead. They know how to treat people. I'd also rather buy from Amazon then ever buy a book from here again. Shameful.
google avatar

Yelp
I gave it 5 stars because if you want a book in town, this is the only place to go. Bookworks is a very cute locally owned shop - reminiscent of what NE bookstores might have been before Barnes and Noble. They have a great selection, with plenty of beach reads, biographies, New England history, magazines, activity toys for the kiddies, and games for adults. (One year we got rained in so took up Cribbage after buying the board there.) I've never done it, but they'll order books for you too, if you're going to be on the island for a while.

Yelp
This is my favorite bookstore in Nantucket. It's got a lot of quirks and a lot of books. It also has cool knick knacks and a great card room, with unique cards, notebooks, and the like. The children's area is also really spectacular. My only complaint is that it is small. I'd love to just sit here and read for hours...
google avatar

Yelp
I love the old-timey local feel of this bookstore. We were staying at the Jared Coffin House next door, and this lovely little nook of a bookstore gave me a fun place to poke around in. I love bookstores, I'm a book editor, actually, but I order most of my books on Amazon now, so I really relish checking out local bookstores when I'm on vacation. Sure, they sell a lot of bestsellers (HELLO BESTsellers, they do have to make money), but I thought they also had a lot of really neat, interesting things here. Feeling inspired by my trip to Nantucket, I bought a copy of Moby Dick, right there, on the spot. Sure I could have ordered from Amazon, but then I wouldn't have been able to sit on the Nantucket docks reading EXACTLY what I wanted. Another plus is that they stay open late, unlike most things, so if you're looking for something to do, check out Bookworks.
google avatar

CC C.

Yelp
This is such a cute, eclectic kind of book story that just seems to work on this island. You can go browse around and find books on Nantucket, or a silly gift like a wallet that moos, or uncoredcted advanced proof copies of books for a small donation. It's all the things you don't necessarily expect to find here, but love when you do. I always walk in and wish they had a table where I can sit with a book and read for a bit. They do have little nooks that would work, but it haven't been brave enough (or patient enough) to camp out yet. It's definitely a place worth stepping in to and exploring.

Yelp
My favorite bookstore ever, and I'm sort of a bookstore junkie, seeking them out wherever I travel, so take that as you will. Always friendly and knowledgeable staff, great place to hang and browse, everything is organized well, and they have a surprisingly complete stock for such a small place. Also great for books and gifts for kids. One of my favorite ways to kill time on the island. Can't say enough good things about them.

Yelp
I've lived on island for just about 4 years now, and Bookworks has been an exceptional store every time I've gone in. The staff is friendly and helpful, I've had a few wonderful conversations with them during the slow season. It's small, but they do their very best to stock it with something for everyone. It's charming and it has so much character, you can't help but fall in love. When I'm in need of a cute, personal gift for a friend, Bookworks is my first stop. Yes, there is another book store on the island. I've been to both. I only recommend Bookworks. The parking could be better, as it's only street parking and during the summer it's near impossible to get a spot close to the store, but if you want a good book and a lovely atmosphere, it's worth the walk.

Yelp
I LOVED this bookstore. Fantastic book selection, with staff write-ups on favorites. Great accessory selection, as well as cards, calendars, and Tattly tattoos. Overall adorable.

Yelp
Extremely thoughtful collection of books, board games, and specialty items. I am only on Nantucket for vacations, and I stop each year to find something. I never have been let down. A beyond helpful staff is very friendly, and there have been nice Yelp sign in bonuses. I already look forward to next year.
google avatar

Lucy D.

Yelp
Love the fact that they are open until 10:30. Nice selection of local and national best sellers.

Mary B.

Yelp
Thank you Nantucket Bookworks. Thank you for being open until 10pm, even in January. Thank you for keeping your doors open during a summer rainstorm, and letting me get lost in your children's section, re-reading my childhood favorites. Thank you for having a great True Crime section. Thank you for being adorable and your staff for being so nice. A true jem in this community. While so many other places don't seem to care about the year 'round community, Nantucket Bookworks does.

Marika U.

Yelp
We spent so much time in this magical bookstore that we got a parking ticket. So they not only helped us picking out books, but helped us find the new police station also.
google avatar

Tamita M.

Yelp
Lovely, well-organized bookshop with friendly and helpful staff. Wonderful selection and good use of the space. They also have a great stationery room with note cards and gift packaging.
google avatar

Brenda W.

Yelp
Kids and adults agree this is the best store on Nantucket. Also a great gift store (wrapping paper, quirky gifts, cards, toys in the back). Whenever we go to Nantucket, this is our favorite in-town destination.
google avatar

Melissa T.

Yelp
Nantucket books Is one of my favorite book shops. There is never a visit to Nantucket when I don't make my way in for book hunt and End up leaving with a pile of books. The buyer for this store must be obsessed with reading .... Based on the wide range of choices in this one store there is the typical old classic and best seller sections but it's the new up and coming authors that Nantucket books seems to find before the rest of the world.
google avatar

Jenna H.

Yelp
Great little book nook! My husband and I stopped here on our way out of town to get the ferry and easily spent an hour here devouring the book selection. I found the place both welcoming and cozy - a great place to spend a rainy day.
google avatar

Betsy S.

Yelp
This is a wonderful, adorable, and very well-stocked bookstore. We were visiting for a week with our family and two year old son, and everyone loved Bookworks. Great selection of books, awesome children's area with great books, toys, art supplies, and more. I even got an adorable canvas printed purse there that I love. Basically they just have a great eclectic variety of merchandise in addition to their books. Lovely lovely bookstore.

Chand Z.

Yelp
In addition to having some of the most interesting books that I can't find anywhere else, Nantucket Bookworks has the cutest board games and accessories I've ever seen in a shop its size. I'd buy the whole place if I had the time and money, and I really hope it doesn't change like all the other stores in the area have (they've downgraded to keep up with today's trends, while the bookstore has remained awesome throughout the years). The icing on the cake is its free WiFi and the cool knick knacks and candies it sells at the front desk. I really recommend picking out some exciting adventures there for when the island has rainy days.
google avatar

Yelp
First of all, contrary to the last review, it's not the only place in town to go for a book - that is false. There's also Mitchell's Book Corner on Main. I notice this claim comes from the same individual who said they don't sell Coca-Cola products at Something Natural. You're 0-2 right now, lady. Anyway - there are two bookstores! And they're both depressingly awful! Buy your books on the mainland, or, if you're unlucky enough to be stuck out here for a prolonged period of time, order from Amazon. Both Bookworks and Mitchell's are small - they carry a token selection of like Penguin Classics or something and then the NY Times Bestseller list. Last summer I noticed their most popular items were the latest Harry Potter and the second Khaled Hosseini book, "A Thousand Piles of Vomit" or whatever. Round that out with day old Wall Street Journals and stuff from Stephen King, Jodi Piccoult, John Grisham and so on...this place is like an airport bookstore.

Brad P.

Yelp
Tons of the greatest and newest books, and the best people! My wife and I, and our two boys spend hours there whenever we are on Nantucket. The store was recently rebuilt. Beautiful! Kids area in the back is so much fun. Put it on your list!

Karen m.

Yelp
I love Bookworks, my grandchildren and I go there weekly, always can find books for my 11 and 8 year old and me too! great staff too. our only book shop

Randy P.

Yelp
Great local bookstore. We always visit when on the island. Nantucket Bookworks and Mitchell's are now jointly owner, so are often able to cross-check availability of a requested book. Also the managers are more than willing to order anything not in stock.

Adele S.

Yelp
No trip to the island would be complete without a visit to this funky little bookshop--it's just packed with great stuff. My kids love the childrens' room in back and I love all the hand-written recommendations. The book selection is really impressive for such a small store. Great Nantucket section too as you would expect. We look forward to our Brotherhood/ Juice Bar/ Bookworks evening every year.
