This Gorgeous “Big Island” Retreat Doubles as a Portal to Authentic Hawaiian Culture - Hotels Above Par - Boutique Hotels & Travel

"An oceanfront beach-club restaurant recommended for a stellar lunch reached by a short bike ride from the resort; highlights include crispy calamari and poke with rice, and a citrusy Fresh Lime Squeeze (vodka) that pairs well with the seaside setting."

Beautiful, relaxing oceanfront atmosphere. Food was delicious. Guests not staying at Mauna Lani can still eat at Napua but need to park at public parking available in a small parking lot at Kalahuipua'a Historic Park. From there, it's a 15-minute walk along a scenic trail to the Beach Club. The walk and lunch was a great way to spend our time before our evening flight back to the East Coast of the USA.

Google
From the customer service to the way the food was prepared and the ambiance everything was a 5 star. I barely give reviews but this one deserves it. Angie was our server and she is amazing!! The Ribeye with side of coin potatoes was unbelievably good. The aioli was a perfect match with the crispy potatoes. The steak was cook perfect (medium rare) and had a delicious sauce with it. The guava sticky ribs were also good! The Caesar salad was good and the banana lumpia also. My bf and I shared everything and we were very full at the end! Angie was super knowledgeable and friendly and gave great recommendations. Would fly back to big island from Oahu anytime to dine here again!! Oh and the sunset was beautiful!! :) highly recommend!

Napua was one of the first restaurants I visited when I moved to the island 10+ years ago...and it's still amazing! View, staff, menu, music, wine list; all A+! They care about their guests and those who work in the restaurant and it shows. I always bring visitors when they come to the island and I'll keep doing so!

Google
Nice place but no sunset view. Red wine served refrigerator cold, we had to warm with hands. For the price, casual service “ya want pepper on that?” No share plates. No flatware replacement. Food was fine not anything great. I got the Opa special that came well cooked (she said it was like salmon, so think over cooked salmon). But shiitake cream sauce hides a lot of sins. Hubs got the rack of lamb that was good but the Portuguese style was out of place. The crudo app was chef’s choice fish so I was hoping for an assortment of local fish like kampachi but it was just ahi and more ahi. Off our list. Open air, windy at times.

Google
This place is terrific. Food is outstanding. View is amazing. Our server (G-Money) was nice, fun, and had great food & drink recommendations. Could not ask for a better setting for a nice night out for dinner. Would 100% recommend to anyone. In fact, I'm going back myself tomorrow. It was that good.

We had a great dining experience at Napua a couple days ago. Out of all the restaurants we tried on the island, this was our favorite. All of the plates we ordered were delicious and cooked to perfection. The BBQ Ribs were a big hit at the table. We also shared the prawn toast and calamari to start. The waiter was very friendly and super helpful the entire night. Great experience. Thanks!

Google
My all-time favorite on the Big Island. Kinda want to keep the secret to myself. Food is exquisite, amazing wine selection, superb service, best setting for a very special night.

Rack of lamb was phenomenal! Beautiful setting especially for dinner. Live music was exceptionally great as well!

Yelp
We went to what was considered to the best restaurants in the Waimea and Waikaloa area and Napua was by far the best restaurant as far as food goes The location by the sea and the service were also top notch The wine was delicious. The ahi Crudo melts in your mouth. The fish was fantastic. The kabocha squash was amazing Etc I highly recommend Napua over Canoe house any day

Yelp
Nice place but no sunset view. Open air, windy at times. Tables next to us had an altercation over the blinds, up/down/mid. Red wine served refrigerator cold, we had to warm with hands. For the price, casual service, "ya want pepper on that?" No share plates. No flatware replacement. Food was fine not anything great. The crudo app was chef's choice fish so I was hoping for an assortment of local fish like kampachi but it was just ahi and more ahi. I got the Opa special that came hard and over cooked. Luckily, shiitake cream sauce hides a lot of sins. The asparagus and mashed potatoes were very good. Hubs got the rack of lamb that was good but the Portuguese style was out of place. Details: We were given a steak knife when the lamb was incorrectly served to me. We had gone onto the grassy area to get a photo of ourselves and our waitress looked right at us and did not offer to help take the photo. Our entrees were served by another waiter as we took our seats. (Perhaps a fork replacement happened then, because after that I noticed my fork was bent.) Off our list.

ORIJIT D.

Yelp
Great date night. We were staying close and arrived a bit early and were seated in a few minutes. They are beachfront property and you can wait on the beach if you like. Service was great. We ordered the rack of lamb and daily catch special. Both were top notch. The fish was done in a fusion style with a map-tofu base, which was very interesting. A Schezwan fusion with western style fish made my day.. and the lamb chops were delectable, a bit rare for my wife's taste, perhaps they should have asked ... but it was a perfect evening for us .

Yelp
We came in for a nice date night and had a great experience. Service was great overall. We made a late reservation and were seated on the patio with a beautiful view. - Fresh catch (4.5/5): fresh, cooked well, flavorful. $50 - Ribeye (5/5): this was so good. Perfectly medium rare, seasoned well. So much flavor. $56 - House fries (4.5/5): recommended by the waitress. Good portion size, small crispy fries. $11

Yelp
We made reservations here about two months in advance in Open Table. When we were in Hawaii, getting to the restaurant wasn't too difficult. The parking lot was not highly lit but you have the moon light!! We walked in and was greeted but was told that our table was not ready yet. We went to the bar area and waited prob a good 25min We finally got seated. The waitress was nice and took our drink orders and gave us the specials for the day. The kids had some of the keke menu, i ordered the Caesar salad as an appetizer which was made really well, wife shared the rib eye with one of the kids and I ordered one of the seafood specials. We also ordered the calamari which the kids didn't care for but I enjoyed it. It was a peaceful outdoor seating!! I guess the only gripe that we had was that we were celebrating our daughter's bday - we got some desert and wished her a happy birthday and she blew out the candle. One of the bus boys said that his niece was named Aila and in Hawaii it means fat which made my daughter cry but he tried to fix it but ended making our daughter sad at the end and cry on the ride home.

Yelp
I will just come out and say it: Napua is the best restaurant on the Kohala coast and we have eaten at most of them, including Napua, several times. It's not the fanciest or the shishiest but every item on the menu is well-conceived and flawlessly prepared not just some of the time but almost all of the time. (The one time it wasn't they comped the thing without our asking.) That's our experience, reviews to the contrary notwithstanding, and it can't be said of any of the other choices. Went tonight, shared a caesar salad. I had the ribs and my wife had the catch (ono) both perfect as usual. A new dish for us was a fried potato creation that they call Rosemary Coin Fries with herbs and a splash of sauce. Potatoes are easy to cook but hard to cook well and these were cooked well. Nice cobbler/icecream desert completed the picture. Service was not only friendly (as always); it was very well informed. Given the difference in our mains, we had resigned ourselves to wine by the glass until our server suggested a beaujolais that absolutely did the trick. (And I don't like beaujolais!). The only other person we know who could pull this off used to be the wine steward at Bern's in Tampa which has a wine celler with 900,000 bottles. The setting is beautiful, close to the shoreline and considerably more peaceful than the larger and more well-known competitors. If you want to see the sunset you have to walk for about five minutes but, in season, sunset is done by six and it is dark ten minutes later so a pre-dinner stroll is the way to do it.

Yelp
Had an amazing view and even better service! The food was exceptional and it was definitely one of our best experiences on the island.

Greg M.

Yelp
Nice place by the beach. Food was enjoyable and cocktails were nice. I enjoyed my bbq pork sandwich. Service was a little slow in getting a cocktail, but they were tremendously busy and the staff did their best to meet the demand.

Yelp
A favorite stop for a lovely, locally sourced, and delicious meal for special occasions, date night, or dinner with family and good friends. The warm and knowledgeable service is always appreciated!
google avatar

Allen W.

Yelp
The service was great - everyone was super friendly but not intrusive. Our waiter helped us take photos also! The location is amazing, and I'd highly recommend reserving a time near sunset. Once the sun goes down, there's lights strung up across the patio, and a warm breeze even in December. Food was delicious too! I got the lamb and it was so tender. Big win on the green beans as well. We really liked the calamari appetizer and the bread!

Yelp
If I had written this last year, when my family and I had the most magical meal of our trip, it would have been a five star review. For some reason, everything we got on this most recent visit - particular the special, which we got talked into trying - was a huge swing and a miss. I mean everything. Not sure why happened. The sunset view, if you've timed your reservation correctly, is as beautiful as ever at the beach club, and the service affable and professional, but the food feels sadly unreliable to me now. Adding one star (to what should really be a three star review at best) for the guitarist, who played 真夏の果実 as we were walking out.

Yelp
Our first dinner here in Big Island is at this place. Wife and I are celebrating our anniversary in this island so for the next few days we will be trying several highly rated restaurants. First is Napua at mauna Lani. The place is situated with great view of the beach. They don't have a long list of items in the menu but I suppose all are good. The calamari is a 'must' try. Tender and tasty. The fresh catch of the day is also amazing. I ordered the pork ribs. The sauce or glazing on top is so good. For the drink... try the one with tanduay. I forgot what is called. The martini is also very good. They have live music that compliments the outdoor dining. Our server Jasmine is so nice and will give her high-five for that. Overall experience is worth 4.7

Yelp
Amazing dinner, service, and setting. Just beautiful. The food was top-notch. I had the kampachi, which was the chefs special. I can't even describe how good this was. The flavor combinations were off the charts. Just unreal! The salad was delicious. Love the mix of greens, strawberries, goat cheese, and greens was perfect. My wife had the Mahi Mahi and loved it. I had a bite, really good, but not as good as the kampachi. The brownie dessert was delicious. Probably the best brownie dessert we've ever had at a restaurant. Our server was great. The setting is spectacular. If you're looking for a great date night place, you can't go wrong here.

Yelp
Catch of the day was raw on the inside??? Is that how it's supposed to be??? Lamb had some raw pieces and some medium pieces. Seared veggies were tough and no knife was provided. For the price, we expected more.
google avatar

Joshua L.

Yelp
Lovely location. Very friendly service. I enjoyed my ahi tartare and loved the lemongrass salad. My wife didn't enjoy the Olena Cavetelli. Said it had truffle butter. Not a drop of a taste of truffle on that dish. My son enjoyed the ribeye. Cocktails were good. Just a bad night in the fish dish.

Yelp
If you looking for a very nice restaurant for a special occasion or just want to treat yourselves while you're on the Big Island, Napua is the place. An open air restaurant located in Mauna Lani area, overlooking the beach. Best time to go right before Sunset. I have been here a couple of times and enjoyed it every time. The ambiance is what you expect of a nice restaurant on the beach. The staff is always nice, helpful & friendly. Some times the restaurant will also have live music in the evenings. The food has always been excellent. Everything is always fresh and flavorful. The cost is $$$, but for a special evening it is worth it. Looking forward to the next time I visit.

Yelp
Napua is a favorite of ours when we are on the Big Island. The restaurant is located in the Mauna Lani Resort. We enjoyed our cocktails, a Spicy Margarita the perfect balance of heat and the Old Fashioned was garnished with a delicious Amarena cherry. We both ordered the Mahi Mahi special, served on top of a polenta cake with a romesco sauce. Freshly caught Mahi Mahi, moist, mild, semi sweet and flavorful. Service was attentive and friendly, we dined at the bar. The views of the cove from Napua especially at sunset together with outstanding service and delectable food keeps us returning every time we are on the Big Island.

Paymon A.

Yelp
Nice fresh food with local fish. Service was great. Alili mai tai was delicious! Server was very friendly and knowledgeable about his menu/drink options and how they pair.

Bob B.

Yelp
Used to love this place but since Covid the staff got arrogant about access & then acted like it was a privilege we got in. Then they raised the prices, portions shrank, food quality went down. We gave it one more shot & it was awful. They have the potential to be #1 or close to it but IT IS WAY OVERPRICED & arrogant for the quality & what you get. It's almost like they thought they were Michelin star rated. Please go back to what you were pre-Covid.

Yelp
Definitely coming here again! Pros: - Beautiful scenery, delicious food and drinks, great atmosphere -- what's not to love! Cons: - ʻAʻohe!

Kevin F.

Yelp
Took awhile for our server to arrive but she made up for it in a big way with quality service and great recommendations on mains. The ambiance is pretty casual with a bar area and main seating indoor and outdoor. Food was delicious.

Anthony C.

Yelp
No daytime parking at the restaurant. Went to Tommy Bahama's instead and it was great!

Yelp
My wife and I finished our last day on the Big Island with a round of golf at the Mauna Lani North Course and dinner at Napua on 12/10/24. We had so many great meals over that week but our last night at Napua was the best! We had a small bite after golf. Big mistake. Make sure you come here really hungry as you take in the magnificent beachside ambiance and live music. Here is what we ordered: Cocktails: Mai Tai Wine: Bottle 0f 2023 Failla Pinot Noir, Sonoma Cost Appetizer: Calamari Steak Entree: BBQ Pork Ribs Side: Garlic Confit Mashed Potatoes We came here last year and and it was fabulous. We did our own Mai Tai tastings last year from seven different locations on The Big Island. Napua has the best Mai Tai on Hawaii. We also ordered a bottle of Failla Pinot Noir to compliment our meal. The Failla was on their value menu at $85 which I thought was a great deal. The Calamari steak was so flavorful prepared with a panko crust, tomato poke, house made sweet chili aiolo, unagi. The best Calamari I have ever had in my life! The pork ribs were so tender and savory, flavored with their house made guava BBQ sauce and accompanied with perfectly cooked jasmine rice. We also had a side of the garlic confit mashed potatoes. A memorable dinner for sure. Dinner for two with Mai Tai's, a bottle of wine your meal will probably cost around $250-$300.

Yelp
This place is so freaking good. I love it. The li hing tequila and the fish and chips are awesome. I would be here every chance I get.

Rebecca B.

Yelp
Napua is a wonderful dining establishment, whether for lunch or dinner. Set in the beautiful area of Makaiwa Bay, you are greeted by a friendly staff, and presented with amazingly delicious food! The highlight, we have to say, is the charcoal toasted bread with salted butter. Jason is fantastic and provided a wonderful dining experience. A place not to be missed. " for sure " ! Aloha
google avatar

Laurie M.

Yelp
I booked this out a month in advance after reading the great reviews and we were so disappointed in the entrees. While the service was good, the highlight of the meal was the appetizer of ahi tartar. Delicious and served with fried fish skin chips. However, the main entree "Fresh Catch" of the day (ono) was dried out, served atop a fried polenta block (tough to cut through) with a sun dried tomato sauce, which wasn't a good combination at all. Both my husband and I got the fish and neither dish was redeeming. Such a disappointment at that price point. The only redeeming aspect was the beautiful view. Hopefully the restaurant will get back to its former rating of delicious entrees, but it isn't there right now.
google avatar

Kyle V.

Yelp
Fantastic. Best experience, ambiance, and food. Waitress was friendly, helpful and kind. BBQ ribs with guava was amazing. Catch of the day had an amazing flavor pallet. Ahi tartarte appetizer was flavored so well with fried seaweed to act as a cracker. Lilikoi cheesecake is made locally at a bakery and didn't disappoint. View is unbeatable. Highly recommend if you are looking for a date night spot while on vacation.
google avatar

Melissa B.

Yelp
Amazing, punctual, and personable service. Elegant, sunny, breezy, and relaxing dining area. My salad was perfection! The fresh swordfish was the best of my life, so tender, flaky, and decadent.
google avatar

Camille L.

Yelp
Ambiance is an A+ since there's a nice view of palm trees, ocean and beach. We got a table outside. The Calamari appetizer is a must and I got their Ono Seabass special which was decent. The kids menu is also decent since we had our toddlers. The waiter was friendly as well. We made reservations far in advance due to the popularity of this place. They have their own private parking lot which is convenient. I recommend dining here if you're staying near by in the Waikoloa area on the Big Island.

NT W.

Yelp
Dining at Napua was a highlight of our vacation. The location was amazing, food was delicious and the service was fantastic. Very quiet and romantic spot for dinner. Cocktails were great! Portions were very nice and we can eat a lot but couldn't finish everything. Highly recommend this restaurant and we're looking forward to our next trip back!
google avatar

John G.

Yelp
Great food, view and service. Fun way to spend last evening on the Big Island. Hope to return again soon .

Richard C.

Yelp
Everything was good, especially the service. Our order was taken and the food appeared at the table faster than you could stand in line at a fast food place. The wind was blowing some and light rain detracted from the overall experience. Nothing fantastic but overall good.
google avatar

Juliana D.

Yelp
We absolutely loved our dinner here. We didn't make a reservation in time, so we sat at the bar. This place has old Hawaii no pretentiousness charm with a gorgeous view of the beach. For drinks, get the lime squeeze, it's incredible. Lime coconut frozen drink with bits of lime rind. So delicious and refreshing. We ordered the catch of the day, so good and rhe ribs, which had a delicious sweet sauce. We even came back the next day to get lime squeezed to go. All the servers and hosts are so friendly. I love this place and will definitely be back.

D M.

Yelp
Excellent food and service. Focacia bread was wonderful. House special compache fish was to die for! Everything from the salads, rib eye steak and Ono fish were perfectly prepared and flavorful! Service was top drawer.
google avatar

Katie A.

Yelp
My husband and I both got food poisoning from dining at Napua, ruining the final day of our vacation. We called the restaurant the next morning to let them know about this, and which dish (the lamb entree we shared) we believe gave us the food poisoning. The person I spoke to ensured us that the manager would call me back to discuss our unfortunate experience, but the restaurant never followed up. I would expect more from a restaurant of this caliber.
google avatar

Peter W.

Yelp
Sorry to say I was hoping for better. It's is more of a fancy bar than a nice restaurant. Host area is a little run down. We had the Caesar salad which was very uninspired. The Pork Ribs had a nice flavor, however, there was very little meat on the bones...Very disappointing. The worst meal was the Rib Eye Steak, it was so fatty that it was difficult to eat. A good Rib Eye has nice marbling is easy to chew and enhances the flavor. This was FAT and tasted like a $3.00 steak from the supermarket. On the bright side the wait staff was attentive and enjoyable.
google avatar

Katherine C.

Yelp
I always come to Napua when on the Big Island, which is about four times a year. The last time was in November and I had the most amazing lamb chops. I was so looking forward to having the lamb chops again but they changed the menu. We had the chicken which was good, and the special Mahi Mahi. Th Mahi Mahi was good but it was on a bed of homemade pasta with some eggplant. It was a bit of an off pairing to have fish with pasta. It was the first time I didn't love my meal at Napua. Service is always great though, especially from Halana, who's always so friendly and has a huge smile.
google avatar

Bruce B.

Yelp
Had the calamari was good and the ahi also good. Don't get a mixed drink stick with the wine or beer.. had a cosmopolitan but it was very weak! Waitress was good. The bill 2 entries two appetizers 3 drinks $230 with tip and tax
google avatar

Myriam B.

Yelp

Bailey W.

Yelp
Great food and good service. A nice quiet kinda hidden gem of a restaurant on the beach to boot!
google avatar

Peter A.

Yelp
The market fish was incredible! One of my favorite on the island loved the sun-dried tomato sauce and crispy kale bed. Cocktails were also great. My wife thought her fish special (Ono I think) was kind of mid.

Sean A.

Yelp
Food was amazing and the ambiance was great! Lei (spelling?) was an awesome server. Highly recommended!
google avatar

Jayson G.

Yelp
If you're looking for a great ambiance and not too crowded like lava lava with spectacular food and awesome views this is the place to go! They had Vaughn Valentino playing r&b when we ate there. He's really good! The staff are super polite and professional our server was outstanding and even gave us some ideas to go for the rest of our vacation. I highly recommend this place!
google avatar

Mark C.

Yelp
We had such a great experience two years ago that we returned to celebrate our friends' 50th Wedding Anniversary. Once again, Napua made the evening truly special. Our server, Jasmine, was superb and even took time to help us with photos out on the grass with the ocean in the background. Both the food and service were top shelf! All members of our party of five ordered the Ono. We all agreed that the fish was absolutely delicious and the plating was beautiful. The Chef here is excellent. This restaurant would be a "must visit" all by itself, but it's undeniable that a huge part of the experience at Napua is the amazing setting which is truly gorgeous. The restaurant seating is intimate with an outdoor vibe and expansive ocean views. You cannot ask for more! We will always make sure we visit Napua whenever we return to the Big Island.

Angela A.

Yelp
Nice little spot by the ocean. Elegant with amazing food. I especially recommend the calamari steak and the ribs!
google avatar

Eric L.

Yelp
Catch of the day ( mahi mahi) and bbq ribs were phenomenal. I highly recommend making a reservation early if you're planning a trip to the big island! Excellent food/service with spectacular views of the sunset (6pm in late May). Live music was also relaxing and well played!

Roe M.

Yelp
Napua our favourite restaurant in whole world. farm to fork on Mauna Lani Beach Club.. the most stunning outlook and beach, amazing staff and a total Hawaiian experience.
google avatar

Denise Y.

Yelp
Loved feeling the breeze under covering from the sun, listening to beach music and watching the ocean. We came for a late lunch - 3p. However, our rating is service & food oriented. 1st our server was indifferent about his job which is different from a Hawaii time vibe. 2nd was the food. We got the Ahupua'a Salad $24 and added the grilled chicken for $11. The salsa was described wonderfully as local greens, tomatoes, and strawberries, Big Island goat cheese, Waimeli honey garlic dressing. What we got was unimpressive, lacked flavor, barely larger than a dinner salad served in a large bowl. The chicken was dry and hard in spots. The only thing good was the Kona Light Blonde Ale. This was a $45 lunch and we left hungry, disappointed and wishing we had not stopped in for lunch. We do not expect mainland pricing, but this meal didn't even warrant resort pricing for what we received. They also weren't busy so no idea why our meal was so dissatisfying. Sorry, but we don't understand the other reviews. Maybe a difference between lunch & dinner?

Mark F.

Yelp
Great location, beautiful sunset views, wonderful fresh food with stand out food including ribs, calamari and crudo. Sommelier was really helpful and knowledgeable. Service was inconsistent, but generally a positive experience. Some improvements to service and this was a 5 star evening!
