Island of inspiration: Penang's flourishing arts scene - SilverKris

"A narrow, long shophouse bar with high ceilings, bare walls and vintage seating that spills onto the sidewalk, serving music, drinks, coffee and cakes while attracting young artists and a lively crowd; its tunnel-like layout and communal vibe make it a compact, creative hangout." - Marco Ferrarese

I’ve been to Narrow Marrow countless times over the years, and it remains one of my favourite cafés ever. Their tiramisu is still the best in Malaysia—hands down. The texture is perfectly balanced, creamy yet light, with just the right amount of coffee and alcohol. Every bite feels like perfection, and it’s consistently amazing every single visit. The atmosphere here is cozy and unique, with a warm, artistic vibe that makes it the perfect place to chill, catch up with friends or enjoy some quiet time. The staff are always friendly and attentive, and their coffee is great too—smooth, aromatic and well made. If you’re a dessert lover or just someone who appreciates quality café experiences, Narrow Marrow is a must-visit. Always worth the trip, and it never disappoints. Highly recommended!

A must-visit café if you’re in Penang! The place has such a chill vibe — great music, comfy seating, and a beautifully artsy interior. The open bar setup adds a nice touch, and the staff are super friendly and welcoming. The drinks are delicious, and the menu itself is really creative and fun to browse through. Definitely try their tiramisu — it’s soft, not too sweet, and absolutely delightful. Perfect spot to relax, sip a good coffee, and soak in the cozy atmosphere. Will definitely come back next time I’m in town! 🌿✨ ⭐ Rating: 5/5 – Great coffee, lovely people, and amazing vibes!

Narrow Marrow Café is a charming little spot tucked away from the main streets, perfect for a relaxing coffee break or catching up with friends. The interior has a cozy, minimalist vibe with warm lighting and comfortable seating, making it a great place to unwind or work for a few hours. Their coffee is rich and aromatic, and I especially loved their Dirty Chai it’s taste cinnamon . The tiramisu espresso kahlua is my favorite! Service was friendly and attentive, even during busy hours. It’s a small café, so it can get crowded during weekends, but it’s definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area. A hidden gem for anyone looking for quality coffee and a peaceful atmosphere.

Narrow Marrow is a whole different experience at night. The atmosphere is incredible—dimmed lighting and raw industrial decor that gives off serious post-apocalyptic/cyberpunk vibes. It’s the perfect spot to just hang out and soak in the atmosphere. As for the menu: Coffee: Really solid. You can tell they take their beans seriously. Nutmeg Soda: A must-try! It’s super refreshing and something unique to Penang. Tiramisu: We ordered a slice and it was lovely—creamy and rich without being too heavy. If you are looking for a place with character that isn't your typical cafe, this is it.

Based on the reviews, I decided to try the Tiramisu Espresso Kahlua and it didn’t disappoint. It wasn’t too sweet, just ngam ngam for my taste. I also got myself a Hojicha Latte since the matcha no stock. The vibes there were pretty relaxed… and I have to say, the cashier at the counter was kinda cute too hehe. Will def come again whenever im in penang next time ;)

I appreciate the tiramisu even though I'm not a big fan of the espresso flavor. The texture and the sweetness with the alcohol has the right kick. The mocha drink was nice as the chocolate flavor was significant to me. Great place to be and good service too.

Google
famous for their tiramisu but it was the clitoria cheesecake what stolen my heart! Super well curated viby place with cool and kind people, amazing coffee, art and many details you can observe and never get bored. Love it and will be always looking forward to visit again.

We found this place by chance while searching on Google and thought we’d give it a try while on a short visit here. It was pretty packed when we got there on a Friday afternoon, and we were asked to wait at the back. Most of the cheesecakes and various tiramisu were still available. I ordered the Hojicha strawberry tiramisu because I don’t take coffee or alcohol, and my friend went for the regular tiramisu. To be honest, there was no strawberry whatsoever in mine, even though the menu clearly mentioned it should come with strawberry compote (I even double-checked the menu). All I got was a tiny, dried-up piece of strawberry on top as decor. The cream was also soft - too soft (likely just heavy cream with very little or no mascarpone), and for RM26 a slice, I didn’t think it was worth it. We got seated at the bar table, which had a nice old-school, rustic feel. But here’s the part that really put us off - we were sitting right in front of the baristas, and we saw one of them sniffing and then tasting tea from three different glasses using the same spoon for all of them! Then another barista just poured the tea into glasses with ice and served them to customers like it was nothing. Honestly, after seeing that, we don’t feel comfortable recommending this place to our friends visiting Penang. Sure, you might have a close-knit team of baristas or even family members working together, but that’s no excuse to overlook basic hygiene. Friendly service is great, but it should always come with proper cleanliness.
