The 12 Best Things to Do in Natchez, Mississippi in 2025

"I visited the Natchez Museum of African American History and Culture, which opened in 1991 and is managed by the Natchez Association for the Preservation of Afro‑American Culture; the museum highlights African American history in the Southern United States from the 1700s to the modern day. It's open Monday–Friday from 10am–4:30pm and Saturdays from 10am–2pm, admission is free, and it provides important context to the region's cultural heritage and contributions." - Matthew Kepnes

What an amazing museum! I made the trek on a random Saturday and I am so glad I did. The gentlemen working were friendly, informative and helpful. There was so much to look at and features a variety of historical items and artifacts. So many books from local authors, artwork. A short video is offered and has a lot of history. I would recommend to anyone in the area. It is free, but they do accept donations.

I enjoyed the museum. I've been to Natchez many times but had never been to the museum. They had a lot of cool artifacts and displays. They played a nice video, and the guy was very informative. I would definitely visit again, and it was free.

Google
Absolutely amazing, so much detailed information! This is a MUST stop if you visit Mississippi. Founded by a group of women to share information to the masses who will listen. It's free but they take donations, you could spend hours in here reading everything. They have a WONDERFUL book collection.

I love learning about history. This small museum was packed with loads of information. There was even a video at the end and a large smart tablet with excel sheets. The guide is what made this place memorable. Mississippians are truly hospitable. He shared information about his history and of more well known history such as the Buffalo Soldiers and their connection to Natchez Mississippi. I’m from Mississippi but feel that people from Mississippi and close by should visit if they have a thirst for knowledge.

This was a very authentic experience. The docent is a lifelong Natchezian who is an excellent ambassador for Natchez. This is a must see when in Natchez.

Google
A must visit in Natchez. A very personal demonstration of the African American experience especially in Natchez from 1619 to present. An overwhelming amount or reading material.

Yelp
This is an amazing place to come to learn bout African American history. If you live in Mississippi, you should plan a visit. They played a short film to tell some history of African Americans from Mississippi that made an impact and accomplished some big things that started a wave for us all.

Yelp
" Great Collection Of Local African American Culture " This African American History & Culture Museum in Natchez is a small museum with many local displays and artifacts. Our Tour guide led us thru the museum explaining the personal experience and the reasons why the African American's used several experiences to try to become equal partners in the United States of America. The museum also show how difficult and hard the journey was for the African Americans as the White majority treated the Black's so bad. Very good history lesson for everyone in America.

Yelp
This museum was on our list and also recommended by the visitors center. Located in downtown in a historic building, this museum features an interesting array of historic and cultural information. Bobby Dennis, the director, spoke with us during our tour and was very engaging. His info, research and thoughtful conversation provide some great insight into some virtually unknown African American history dating back to pre-colonial times thru present day. Enlightening visit. Thank you Bobby.

Yelp
A delightful and enlightening morning on our Mississippi River Cruise. Well worth the time to visit and study the history of African Americans in Mississippi. Museum does not focus on the horrors of slavery, but more of the achievements.

Yelp
Great little museum. Glad we stumbled by and went in. They had great displays to learn all about the history of Natchez and African American History. You can walk around and see the displays yourself or get a tour. My husband and I went on a tour (free of charge). Our tour guide, David was very informative. He showed us around the museum and answered any questions that we had. He helped to spark an interest in African American history within my husband and I. We will definitely be doing more research and learning. If your in Natchez be sure to stop by. You will walk away with some new knowledge.

Yelp
Excellent. Museum provided a good overview that included colonial times, antebellum, civil war, civil rights era, etc. Staff provided a great synopsis of 'why' the focus wasn't just on the slavery experience. It is about the people. Museum had a lot of reference materials, books, etc. that inspire additional exploration on my part. Very well done.

Yelp
I have often gone by this museum when visiting Natchez, but opening hours are limited, so this year was my first visit. The museum has some very good exhibits; but in other sections the collection is haphazard. For example, the section on African art had hand-lettered signs and only provided the most basic information. The sections on slavery and post-war were professionally done and dispelled many of the myths of that period. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful as was the Director - I became a member of the Friends of the Museum after my visit. Denver Mullican

Yelp
This is a great little museum that needs to be promoted around town more. We stumbled across it and made a point to go back for a tour and film. The curator and volunteer were very knowledgeable about the slave trade days to present, clarifying differences in freed slaves and free slaves in the 1800s. Definitely worth the stop and I left with a list of books and black authors to look up.

Yelp
Well worth an hour although it won't be enough. Curator/guide very knowledgeable. Covers a lot of years so hard to get to everything and yes a lot of books and information just stored but some well presented, informative and truthful. Although I enjoyed our one plantation visit this museum told more of the African slave trade history which I felt was lacking at the plantation tour. Great photograph collection.

Yelp
Visited this Museum while on a cruise on the Mississippi. It was the best attraction in Natchez. The art, displays and exhibits cover not only Natchez but much of the south from the 1700's to today. Topics covered include slavery, the Civil War, Reconstruction, 20th Century Wars, the Civil Rights movement and all the way up to hip hop music. Our small group of visitors found the Executive Director, Darrell S. White, to be very knowledgeable, and the volunteers/docents were welcoming and expert. I would love to go back and spend more time there, and I envy locals who can easily attend events and symposia---recent ones include topics like African-American women in the civil rights movement and another on Hip Hop music. Why couldn't my high school teachers and college professors teach history and culture the way this museum does?!
