5 Adaptive Winter Sports Programs in the U.S.

"Located minutes from Park City Mountain and Deer Valley Resort, this program takes participants to both mountains and uses instructors trained in a wide range of adaptive techniques—2-track through 4-track, mono- and bi-ski, snow slider, ski bike, snowboarding, and guiding for low-vision or blind skiers. It serves people with intellectual disabilities and those who are deaf or hard of hearing, and many participants go on to try summer offerings like horseback riding, biking, and trekking." - Evie Carrick Evie Carrick Evie Carrick is a writer and editor who’s lived in five countries and visited well over 50. We absolutely loved our experience at the National Ability Center. My son is on the autism spectrum and usually does not stay with people he doesn’t know — and yet here, something truly special happened: he happily went with the instructors without me. He stayed for the entire class and when I picked him up, the smile on his face said it all. The level of empathy, patience, and professionalism from the instructors was incredible. They create a safe, inclusive, and joyful environment for the kids. We highly recommend the National Ability Center. An exceptional experience and one we are deeply grateful for.

It’s hard to put into words how we feel about the NAC ski program. My daughter has grown leaps and bounds in the 4 years she has participated. The staff feel like family. This is physical therapy for my daughter the doesn’t feel like “physical therapy”. She enjoys it and it makes my heart so happy to watch her progress. My husband and older daughter started volunteering with the lessons for other participants and we have fallen in love with that side of the program as well. This place is truly changing lives and we plan to volunteer in every capacity that we can. Being a part of helping other experience things you love so much is such a blessing!

The NAC was an amazing facility to work with! Everyone was extremely kind, professional, positive, and went out of their way to ensure that our group had a great time. All of their facilities and programming were completely inclusive and well run. We were incredibly impressed with the organization and safety provided by the team at the challenge course. Mathu was our group lead and we had a blast working with him! We could not have asked for a better weekend. Thank you NAC Team!!

Staying at the NAC facility was very comfortable and relaxing. The staff is always excellent, helpful and kind. Would highly recommend to anyone wanting to explore the amazing opportunities for adventure and connection here in Utah! Our guides and support team, Ben, Josh, Abe, Mathu, and Mike were so awesome!!!

This place has been great. They have so much patience and a variety of activities. I highly recommend this facility for children who may need assistance with doing tasks on their own.

Yelp
The NAC is the BEST!! This is my third time here. I am a disabled veteran and they support us so much. I am impressed with their staff, they are so kind and helpful and really try to get to know you. The rooms are so clean and comfortable. Each room has a weighted blanket! All the activities I have participated in have been so fun and they are patient in teaching. Mike is a wonderful chef I always look forward to his cooking. Even my little kids enjoyed the obstacle course. I have sone indoor rock climbing, Pickleball, yoga, archery, bike riding, horse therapy, skiing and team building. They are always improving things and take our feedback when we are done. Thanks NAC!!

Yelp
We did the high ropes course today and it was a blast. The staff were very engaging and fun. The obstacles were challenging but doable. My favorite obstacle was the "Tarzan" one. In order to do that one, you have to let out the Tarzan yell. Overall, it was a great experience and I can't wait to come back!!!

Yelp
Assisted a low-vision family member with skiing at Park City. She now loves skiing and can't wait to get back to the slopes.

Yelp
I have been a participant at the NAC since I was 9 yrs old and I'm 30 yrs old now. The NAC has taught me how to snowboard and ski and have more self confidence and be a stronger person. The NAC is an amazing place. They change lives. They certainly changed my life for the best way possible.

Yelp
This place was amazing! My daughter, who is special needs, was not able to do any of the things the other children in our group was doing while in vacation in Park City. We contacted National Ability Center and they got us in the next day. This place was the highlight of our trip! Because of her seizures she needed to be outside during the cooler hours and they accommodated us. We went on an amazing bike ride, not flat though. we were able to get bikes for our whole group and my daughter and I were in a tandom side by side bike so the hills weren't too bad. then we went on a horse ride on a trail. it was amazing. the staff was terrific. It is this place that will make us come back to Utah.

Yelp
I was referred to the NAC as I have low vision impairment and suggested to check and see where would be a good start for some easy MTB options. I went into the executive office and was greeted by a nice young lady to my right as the other girl to my left gave the impression that I was interrupting her day. I had explained to the young ladies that I was referred to NAC by my cornea specialist as I have low vision impairment and was asking for some reference materials or suggestions to assist me in finding some mountain biking trails. The young lady to my right suggested all she had was maps for me to purchase I explained yet again that the maps would be difficult for me as I have low vision impairment and the print would be to small for me to see & that I'm new to the SLC area .She then suggested to apps and the young lady to my left pulled it app up her phone and said see it looks like this and explaining to me that I can locate trails and maps there. Well again I could barely see what she was showing me. I'm highly dissatisfied with the "assistance" I received here today! It's ok if they said they didn't know how to help me but at least take my name and number and get back to me with some information later. What's the point of being a National Ability Center to assist those with a wide variety of disabilities with no assistance or lack thereof. I'm learning to get around with my newly diagnosed condition on top of moving to the SLC are from Nevada The frustrating part was their inept ability to understand my question/request or ask me further questions for a clearer understanding. My recommendation is train on listening / customer service skills. Unfortunately I don't have the names of the girls I interacted with today; if they had name tags on I couldn't see them.
