25+ Free Things to Do in Washington, D.C. (Updated 2025)

"I appreciated the National Archives Museum for housing foundational documents like the Declaration of Independence, the Bill of Rights, and the Constitution (and a rare Magna Carta), with informative panels and interactive exhibits for children, and recommended reserving a timed entry ticket online in advance to avoid lines (free with a $1 reservation fee)." - Matthew Kepnes

The only thing I can say is go visit the archives! Great exhibits, and the display of some of the most important documents in our nation's history. We did not get entry tickets, we were there on a Sunday in September and it was not too busy. I think during the summer when it's busier, it's recommended you book an entry time. The gift shop is pretty amazing too 😉

Visited here as part of a tour. I am always impressed by the architectural design of the roundabout in DC. Simply stunning! The 3d tobacco flower designs on the ceilings seem common in a lot of places around here. If you stand there in front of all these documents and the artwork depicting the events, you feel a sense of appreciation for the content. The main rotunda is a bit dim in lighting, but I'm guessing it is all part of the preservation or to avoid glares from the glass.

One of my favorite museums we visited in DC. Great displays on civil rights including Rosa Parks fingerprints. Great exhibits focusing on women's suffrage and immigration. And of course, the magna carter, declaration, constitution, and bill of rights. With all of that inside a single building it is easy to overlook the fantastic Russell Lee's Coal Survey. However, I recommend you carve out time to see the surreal exhibit.

A great experience that is a must-see at least once in your life. While general admittance lines were fairly lengthy, there is an alternate (and quicker) entrance for those that are with guided tours, veterans, or special events. I was fortunate enough to be the first of the day to enter the Rotunda and get some quiet time with the Founding Documents before the crowds entered. Security is kind and courteous and keep order when appropriate. Photography is encouraged in most areas of the Archives, but you'll definitely want to refrain from using flash photography as it is banned throughout the building.

It had been a few years since we had been here. We hit the Constitution and the Bill of Rights which were amazing as always. We really enjoyed the exhibit on mining from 1945. It was very informative and the photography was excellent! We highly recommend it!

My daughter and I enjoyed our visit to the National Archives Museum. There was no wait to get in and the facility was spotless. We enjoyed the exhibits Records of Rights and the temporary photograph exhibit "Power & Light: Russell Lee's Coal Survey". Its amazing when going into the see the Declaration of Independence & the Constitution that they have been able to carefully preserve these artifacts all these years. Its cool to see at least once.

This is where the original Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights are displayed. It is amazing that everyone can get so close to the three cornerstones of the country and learn about the history. The portraits of the current government officials, on the other hand, are a bit abstract and hard to comprehend.

As interesting as our national documents are, just seeing the building itself was an experience. What great architecture. As with most federally funded museums, this place was grand and picturesque. It is truly a structure worthy of housing our nation’s most important artifacts.
