The 13 Best Things to See and Do in Taipei in 2025

"I visited the National Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall, built in 1972 to honor Sun Yat-sen (the Father of the Nation); it houses items from his life, serves as a meeting, educational, and cultural center, and has free admission." - Matthew Kepnes

The National Memorial Hall in Zhongshan Park is currently under renovation, so you can’t go inside. However, it’s still worth visiting because the view from around the pond is very beautiful. You can take great photos of the memorial hall and even see Taipei 101 in the background.

Google
A lovely large square and a great place to admire some traditional architecture with the temple at the front. The water feature is kept clean and it’s a spacious area preventing it feeling too busy, and if you’re in the area you really should pass through.

Unfortunately, the building was closed for renovations on the day I went, but the surrounding area was beautiful with a view of the Taipei skyline. (Visited in Oct.2025)

Under renovation when we visited. You can walk around in the park and lake, its a nice communal space. We enjoyed it.

Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall is a must-visit in Taipei. The architecture is stunning, and the spacious gardens provide a peaceful atmosphere. Inside, you can learn about Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s legacy through well-curated exhibits. The highlight is the hourly changing of the guard ceremony—precise and impressive. The location is convenient, near Taipei 101, making it a great stop on a city tour. Whether for history, culture, or just a relaxing walk, this place is worth visiting. Highly recommended!

the museum is under renovation but we enjoyed sitting around at the park and lakeside.

I came here for a new year countdown celebration. It’s a good view to see Taipei101 from here. Unfortunately the memorial hall was closed due to renovation.

Google
Currently closed for renovation, but an iconic building in the Xinyi area, and a must see place when visiting Taipei. There is also an adjacent park with a large pond, bridge, and gazebo, that is quite beautiful. Pets are allowed, and this is one of the best places to take your dog for a walk in Taipei, or just take a stroll on a beautiful day. There is also a coffee shop adjacent, public restrooms, and nice views of Taipei 101.

Yelp
This memorial hall is one of the key commemorative and historical sites in Taiwan, worth visiting for both historical context and many ongoing cultural exhibitions, research and public educational events. Situated close to both red and blue metro lines and many bus routes, the main building sits in the middle of an open park square with reflecting pool. It's located about a 15 minute walk to Taipei 101, so good to plan into a day of activities in the area. Walking up to an entrance, depending on the time of day, you'll often notice groups of people practicing tai chi, yoga or dance on the portico/veranda that wraps around the building. I love that it's a public space available for various groups to use! Entry is free to most of the museum, with the main 1st/ground floor exhibits focusing on the life and works of Dr. Sun Yat Sen, highlighting his role in the creation of Taiwan as a nation. The main hall with a larger than life statue sits facing the south entrance, with a solemn changing of the guard every hour. There are multiple ongoing exhibits featuring various artists and art mediums (painting, sketching, sculpture, multi-media, etc), calligraphy, handicrafts, most of which are free to view. In past visits I've really enjoyed some gallery presentations of traditional paper-cutting techniques, various paintings (oil, watercolor) and calligraphy. Normal visiting hours are 9am-5pm however the main building is temporarily closed from February 2024 going into 2026 for renovations. The surrounding park is still open. Bathrooms are available inside.

Yelp
Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall is a must-visit in Taipei for Chinese and Taiwanese history and culture enthusiasts. Just a short walk away from Taipei 101, the Memorial Hall grounds is a spacious and clean park, complete with tree-lined paths and a fountain in front of the main building. The Memorial Hall is free to enter, which is amazing for tourists on budgets. It's full of fantastic history of Dr. Sun Yat-sen and of modern Chinese and Taiwanese history, complete with a changing of the guards ceremony that draws a huge crowd of tourists filming the changing of the guards with their camera phones. This is not as large as the Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall, which also boasts its giant statue and changing of the guards ceremony, though the Dr Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall is nowhere near as steep and is easier to walk around. Recommend!

Yelp
Memorial Hall, museum and gallery. The Memorial Hall commemorates Taiwan's founding father Dr. Sun Yat-Sen. Not only a place of remembrance, but a biographical museum of his pictures and letters. It contains displays of Dr Sun's life and the revolution he led. It is also a multi-purpose social and cultural center with several galleries of permanent and temporary art collections. I approached the memorial from the 101, so I came into the Chungshan Cultural Park on the front side, then the reflection pool. It's quite the sight. Completed in 1972, the building area covers 29,464 square meters. The grand entrance to the hall contains a statue of Sun Yat-sen seated facing the entrance. I arrived just in time to watch the formal changing of the guards. So much precision and discipline. After the guards, I started my tour to the right and explored the Dr Sun wing, learning more about him and the revolution he inspired. Then passed through several galleries taking in various collections of art from the past to current young artists. Admission to the exhibits I explored were free.

Yelp
The National Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall was more substantial than I thought it would be. As a Chinese American, I thought there would only be a statue of Dr. Sun Yat-Sen, but I was pleasantly surprised to discover restrooms open to the public, calligraphy classes for adults, an art gallery, gift shops for souvenirs, a library, and more. I also had a chance to see the changing of the guards, which was a unique experience.

Yelp
Over shadowed by Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, but have better photo opportunities with Taipei 101. Dr. Sun Yat-sen memorial hall is where I always bring my visiting friends. There, you can see the stories of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, tour the outdoor garden and watched the guard changing ceremony by the hour. After the visit, you will be in the area to do much of shopping (like, the famous Chia De pineapple cake or some fancy stuff in the department stores) and eating.

Yelp
There are two big Memorial Halls in Taiwan. One is Chiang Kai-Shek and the other is Sun Yat-sen. Sun Yat-sen is smaller than Chiang Kai-Shek. It is located close to Taipei 101. The plus side is that it has less stairs to walk compared to CKS Memorial hall. The place has been very well maintained. The landscaping work was very beautifully done. If you come on the hour, you would also get to see the soldier marching ceremony. There are many artworks to see at Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall. Overall this is one of the famous landmarks in Taipei.

Yelp
Sun Yat-sen History and art installation with free entry. No pictures allowed! so they sayyyy..... Tina's Travels and Tabloid - Ceremony where guard changes every hour on the main floor or view from upstairs. - Super touristy place to be and you can view the Taipei 101 from the outside area - Downstairs in the basement area is where all the artsy paintings are and they are gorgeous! - If you have free time and art is your thing, this is the place to be - Gallery, art exhibit, history, and all the above!

Yelp
I couldn't miss this impressive structure from the observation deck of Taipei 101 and certainly from ground level at the Hall, the tower is an impressive structure! So when we walked through this area, I had to make a stop. Huge building, lots to see including the changing of the guard on the hour. And while there is art to look at inside, no pictures are permitted. Bummer. A great tribute to the founding father of the Republic of China and Taiwan's first President.

Yelp
If you are already in the area, especially after spending time at Taipei 101 (walking distance), this place is well worth a visit! Although it is not as elaborate as the Chiang Kai Shek Memorial, the Sun Yet Sen Memorial is still charming in it's own ways. The main attraction is the changing of the guards that happen inside the memorial hall every hour. Afterwards, you can take a nice and relaxing stroll around the area. I love that there are vast open spaces! There are also beautiful gardens, and artistic and educational exhibits to check out. I noticed many locals exercising, meditating and or holding events/activities on the premises, which was fun to observe! Basically, what you make out of the memorial is what you are going to get. I had a fun time here and super glad my boyfriend and I stumbled upon this spot!

Yelp
We got off at the Sun Yat-sen train station and immediately saw the gold roof of the memorial hall. We walked past a school and the new domed stadium. We had wonderful views of Taipei 101 nearby. Lake Tswei was in front with a beautiful garden and floating islands. The surrounding Chung Shan Park had a large fountains that sprayed different styles of water every :15. Inside we saw an information desk and picked up English brochures and the gallery floor plan. We saw the massive sculpture with the changing go the two guards on the hour. I didn't realize the influence Dr. Sun Yat-sen had on the people of Taiwan. We began with a timeline of his life and the link between China and Taiwan's revolution. The Dr. Sun Yat-sen history exhibit displayed his accomplishments with a lot of audio-visual displays. We walked through the National Gallery and art gallery. There were smaller galleries displaying works of local artists, a library and lecture hall with a large auditorium. We spent about an hour here, it's opened from 9 until 6, it was interesting & free.

Yelp
[Too busy to update reviews lately, so here they are weeks later :)] (Within 24hr-only-stop in Taiwan): Memorial Hall commemorating Dr. Sun Yat-Sen (founding president of Taiwan)~ * YES - Elders, families and children playing in the park * YES - Tourists streaming in and out of the Hall * YES - Local vendors selling lots of kites, toys, and snacks * YES - Lots of benches and planters to sit on * YES - You can tour interiors & exhibitions (offers tours in English, Chinese and Japanese) but we didn't have time More info can be found on their website: http://www.yatsen.gov.tw/en/

Yelp
A must visit, for locals and tourists alike. Come early in the morning to see tons of groups doing what they like from Tai Chi, to hip hop dancing. This Landmark is a Hallmark of Taiwan: Taiwanese love to be active, out and about, early to late. It's a place that reminds you its great to be alive and remind you to enjoy life more. Check to see the schedule for when the guards switch shifts and march inside the hall, its pretty neat. A place to pay respects to the Great Dr. Sun Yat-Sen, revered by the people of Taiwan AND China. To be revered by China is not easy, trust me, and you'll see many tour buses for Chinese mainlanders coming to pay homage. You can see Taipei 101 from here (see my photos), and there is also a neat little straight pathway that runs alongside the hall (closer to the street and sidewalk). This path is full of stones that you can walk on and is "therapeutic" for your internal organs as each stone hits your pressure points. I can walk only maybe 20 feet only, obviously I need to shape up! Come and enjoy! I will often with my loves!

Yelp
I arrived past 6pm which was closed. I couldn't go inside to check it out. So I decided to hang out outside. There were multiple groups doing multiple things outside. For instance, there were a yoga group, taichi group, break dancing group, and many more. Looks like a great place to hang out in the outside...

Yelp
(Disclaimer: Review based on visit to Taipei in November 2013.) Sun Yat-sen was the first president of the ROC. Outside of Taiwan, there are a number of memorials in Asia and North America that are named after Sun Yat-sen. Aside from the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum in Nanjing, this has to be considered one of the most notable. The Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall is near Taipei City Hall and Taipei 101 so it is in the heart of the city. I found this attraction to be okay. The grounds are well cared for and there are some interesting statues outside of the memorial hall. The interior of the building can get quite packed with visitors. There is a changing of the guards ceremony that attracts a crowd. The rest of the complex is a museum documenting the life of Sun Yat-sen. The hall also serves as a multi-purpose educational/cultural center. I did visit the other memorial hall in Taipei, Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall and liked that attraction better. The architecture of that structure is much more memorable and along the lines of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC. If you are in the area, I think this attraction is worth a visit. But it is not one you should go out of your way for if your time in Taipei is limited.

Yelp
The Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall is near Taipei City Hall and Taipei 101 so it is in the heart of the city. I found this is good tourist attraction if you're that area. Military guard changing mini parade occurs every hourly before it closes. It's great to watch it and watch around at memorial hall

Yelp
Fabulous place to visit in Taipei, Taiwan. It contains many historical collections on Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the father of the Republic of China. Moreover, it also hosts exhibitions of all kinds, and I believe all free, including admission to the Hall. The change of guard ceremony is worth watching.
google avatar

Tunaidi A.

Yelp
Not as impressive as the CKS Memorial Hall. The park itself is smaller, and the building not as large. The statue and the changing of the guards is essentially the same scene. The historical exhibition seems to be lacking in background and information.

Yelp
A great place to visit that's right off the MRT. This memorial hall has art exhibits so that's fun to look at. No pictures allowed! Also, there's a guard changing ceremony every hour that's pretty cool to watch. You can choose to watch on the main floor or upstairs. This memorial hall is very similar to the National Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall as it has a huge statue of the man that is being honored and there is a guard changing ceremony. This memorial also has an incredible view of Taipei 101 so be sure to snap photos!

Yelp
Sun Yat Sen (孫中山) was the first president and founding father of the Republic of China. He was a big figure in the events that lead up to the Double Ten Revolution. Completed in 1972, the memorial hall sits in a park called Chung-shan Park. The memorial hall consists of a statue of Sun Yat-Sen, lecture halls, a multimedia theater, a library, and more. The Golden Horse Film Festival and Awards (Taiwan's highest movie award ceremony) is held in the auditorium every year. They have a formal changing of the guards on the top of every hour. It's a pretty big tourist attraction! At the entrance of the memorial hall, you get a pretty nice view of the Taipei 101. Definitely one of the top touristy must see places!

Yelp
Dropped by for a sight of the Memorial Hall. It was a regular day with students practicing dance routines outside the halls.

Yelp
I found myself near Sun Yat Sen Memorial Hall with some time to kill and decided to check it out. I was pleasantly surprised by it. It has very striking architecture and really dominates the area around it. It is surrounded by gardens, which on a nice day, are probably very nice. I walked up the stairs and into the mail hall, where I immediately was faced with a large statue of Sun Yat Sen sitting in a chair. In that sense, it's a lot like the Chiang Kai Shek Memorial. I think this one was a bit nicer on the inside, but like the CKS Memorial, it has guards standing by and you can see the changing of the guard. There is also an attached museum where you can learn a bit about SYS. I didnt have time to see the whole museum, but I understand there are some rotating exhibits that may change periodically, while others remain largely in place. I would say this memorial is worth visiting, and if in the area, I'd make the time to stop by here.

Yelp
The Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall is a beautiful piece of architecture settled in a lovely park space. That's pretty much all it has going for it, though. If its a nice day, then it's a beautiful place to fly a kite or stroll the grounds (there's a stunning pond nestled among some lovely greenery), but that's about all there is to do. The actual exhibits in the hall are fairly drab, and there isn't much else to do here. The location makes it quite nice, however, as it's not far form some great shopping (either on Zhongxiao E. Rd. or surround Taipei 101), so there is lots to do nearby. I wouldn't necessarily make SYS Memorial Hall the focus of an outing, but it makes a fun part of a grander day.

Yelp
Business hours: 9:00AM - 6:00PM Phone: 02 2758 8008 This one landmark holds a variety of different purposes and functions. First and foremost amongst them is in dedication to the Father of the Nation, Sun Yat-sen. As such, the main entrance to the hall contains a statue of Sun Yat-sen and the building still contains some relics and artifacts from his life. Mostly however, the Memorial Hall is used for exhibitions and performances. There are two Memorial Halls in Taipei, this one and Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall. I prefer this one to the latter. It is just as scenic and the architecture is just as grand, but far less people come to this one. Not to mention, this Memorial Hall has a pretty good view of the 101. You may not know but the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall is used once a year for the Golden Horse Film Festival. All of Taiwan's biggest stars get all decked out for Taiwan's biggest movie award ceremony.
