Probably the best thing you can find inside the Fort. An insanely cool museum — entrance is 1,000 rupees per person. Inside, there are two floors packed with fascinating exhibits, each with descriptions and fun facts. Definitely worth a visit!

The National Maritime Museum in Galle Fort is set inside an old Dutch warehouse from the 1600s. It shows ship models, fishing tools, corals, shells, and even a big whale skeleton. You can also see items found from shipwrecks like anchors and pipes. Some parts inside feel a bit hot and old, but the museum is very interesting if you like history and the sea. Worth a visit while walking around Galle Fort.

Great museum! It’s a wonderful place to visit. There’s an impressive giant whale skeleton, nearly 13.5 meters long, which is really fascinating to see. Entrance ticket is required, but it’s definitely worth it!

Galle Maritime Museum offers a well-curated collection of exhibits that shed light on Sri Lanka’s rich maritime history and its role in international trade. The displays are informative and engaging, making it a great stop for anyone interested in naval history, ancient seafaring, or the island’s cultural heritage. A worthwhile visit, especially for history enthusiasts exploring the Galle Fort area.

The museum itself is an interesting window into basic maritime history in the region. The objects on didplay are sorely in need of much more historical context and depth if story - what is provided is quite basic and not even as much detail as what a Google search would render. The tickets are priced vastly differently for locals (LKR 120) vs for foreigners (LKS 1850) which doesnt sit well given foreign visitors get no extra services for the highly inflated price they are required to pay. The space could benefit from some fans and/or airconditioning

I may be biased as I love Maritime museums. I spent well over an hour here in this small museum and read every informational panel. Really interesting history from prehistory to colonial times and all the trade routes and partners including Dutch, British, French and Chinese. Entry seems free for locals and I had to laugh at the foreigners price which looks like its changed daily based on exchange rates with USD? It was 1818LKR for me which ensured I ended up with a handful of rupee coins as change! Only downside is their is no air con and the humidity is horrendous inside this muesum. In each room I stood in front of the one pedestal fan to try and cool myself off.

The Maritime Museum in Galle is an a must see destination for those interested in the maritime history of the region. The museum is housed in a historic Dutch warehouse and it showcases a variety of exhibits related to the island's rich maritime heritage, including shipbuilding, fishing, and trade. Some very interesting statues found after the Tsunami in 2004 are also shown. The atmosphere is very informative and educational, making it a great stop for kids, and anyone curious about Galle's coastal significance. I totally recommended it. It was great, and the kids loved it. Foreign visitors must pay 1800 LKR.
