I had a wonderful experience at the National Museum of Visual Arts. I really appreciated the thoughtful connection between modern and traditional art, showcasing works from some of Uruguay’s most famous artists. The museum is well-maintained, and the staff are very friendly and welcoming. As the daughter of a renowned artist, I was especially excited to share the photos I took with my mother, and she absolutely loved them! It made me wonder if the museum accepts works from international artists. I highly recommend this place to anyone visiting Montevideo who enjoys art and wants to explore Uruguay’s rich artistic heritage. It’s truly a gem!

It's a fairly small museum in Montevideo! Depending on the exhibition it can be really nice. But its worth a visit!

Every year in December there is a program "night in the museum". This is a certain day when the museum is open until midnight and anyone can visit the museum at night. There were quite a lot of people who wanted to. I liked the museum, it is small but has quite a variety of exhibits. If you are nearby, be sure to stop by.

It was lovely to see the display of artists here. It was quite a large selection on display. I entered for free, there’s a place to check-in bags and we had a nice coffee afterwards at the coffee shop.

Beautiful sculpture garden with a cafe right out front of the building. The collection ranges from sculptures, to paintings and video installations. Each section of the museum was incredibly well curated with themes and media. Great mix of classic works and contemporary. I noticed a new exhibition was being installed when I visited and that tells me they rotate their exhibitions greatly leaving the visitor/ viewer with something new to come back and experience. Highly recommended on a nice day and even a rainy one . :)

A very simple rectangular floor plate with a mezzanine level, plus ancillary spaces that accommodate both the permanent collection and special exhibits. The important thing is one can easily view the artwork with proper illumination. The museum grounds are beautiful and tranquil. A coffee pavilion (operated by The Lab) offers excellent coffee and bakery items, with ample outdoor seating in the museum garden. Almost handicapped accessible — the exterior ramps do not provide flawless access for wheelchairs; but once inside everything is good.

It's one of the museums you should visit if you're in Montevideo. The entrance is free and do spend some time to browse the exhibits.
