38 Museums Devoted Entirely to Food, From the Delicious to the Disgusting

"For many years the highlight of Mount Horeb, Wisconsin, was the famous Mustard Museum, run by a local celebrity (Barry Levenson, famous for the mustard museum, naturally) and home to a huge collection of both new and “antique” mustards from all over the world. The museum was small, but delightful, and the collection of antique-mustard serving sets was particularly charming. There was also a stream of movies, such as Mustard: The Spice of Nations, shown throughout the day on a big television in a little seating area known as the “Mustard Piece Theatre.” When the growing collection strained the location, the mustard museum moved 18 miles to Middleton. Now dubbed the National Mustard Museum, it houses an extensive collection devoted to what staff call “the king of condiments, the “collegiate “Poupon U,” and a  gift shop that offers hundreds of mustards ranging from fruity to super hot, all of which can be sampled on request. If one is really serious about mustard, the first Saturday of August is National Mustard Day, and cause for a full-on festival at the museum." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

This place is so dang cool. History of mustard. They have so many different mustards here from all over the world and in each state in America. Such a cool little place and it was free. They did have where you can donate to the very cool museum. The staff working there and in the store are just so very nice and informative. The store is neat as well being they have so many different types of mustard to buy. Bonus you can taste over hundred and fifty different kinds of mustards. I bought some Honey Raspberry Mustard and it is so tasty that I am going back to buy more.

Google
Do you like kookie (not just cookies)? Do you like exploring the off-beat? Do you LOVE mustard and everything about it? Then this is definitely the place for you! Here you’ll find mustard’s from every corner of the world as well as from every state in the union! They’ve got old mustard’s new mustard’s and some that frankly are questionable as are they even mustard. But one things for sure if it’s a mustard (or even resembles mustard) chances are they’ve got it. Taste test some unique samples at their mustard tasting bar, or brush up on your mustard lore in what is possibly the one and only Mustard Piece Theater! They’ve got mustard themed gifts and even mustard themed activities for the little ones. It may be a little quirky and wildly offbeat, but it’s definitely a fun side trip! So if you’re anywhere close, so be sure to put it on your bucket list and stop in to the national mustard museum and be sure to tell them Michele says hey! @nationalmustardmuseum #nationalmustardmuseum

Google
Unfortunately the "museum" part of the museum was being renovated when I stopped by. But I was able to view a bit of the museum and the people in the store/gift shop/tasting room were wonderful! Friendly, knowledgeable, welcoming. If you're in the Madison area, I strongly recommend stopping by

Google
Such Ana amazing history of mustard and samples of all the worlds best kinds! Who knew mustard could be such a fun thing to learn!? And it’s free!

Scott Colgan

Google
Great stop if you enjoy mustard, learning about the history of mustards, or seeing the varieties from around the country and world. Plenty of stations to explore the world of mustard.

Derek Pogorels

Google
Very unique, love these kind of stops. If you like mustard, this is your place. Any and every kind. Scavenger hunt for the kiddos, the tasting bar was awesome.

Alexandria Smith

Google
This is such a fun museum all about mustard! It's certainly unique and you can tell the years of passion behind the story of the National Mustard Museum. Definitely a place you want to stop at!

Google
Come come by yourself or come with a date there’s so much fun stuff to look at and even things to try and eat. They have wonderful sauces for pretzels. They have great jellies they have of course wonderful mustard selections but it’s also a museum and it’s really fun. The kids will love it too.! It’s one of those little doors in a community although it’s not that small because the museum is down in the basement but it’s just so fun to go there because it’s right in downtown Middleton and right next to it is Hubbard‘s diner so my daughter and I have gone there. You know around to the shops around 10:30 or so in the morning 11 and then we will go over to Hubbard‘s diner for lunch And there’s a great new coffee shop over there too. It’s a small one. It’s just beautiful so you are like The mustard museum and another great thing there is they’re very good with shipping and everything because they have wonderful gifts. You can send out like you can even send out the Badger pretzels with some of the great mustard. Maybe even some spices they’ll ship it for you. It’s really cool. I’m sure they might even be online but come have a fun time.

Yelp
As a fan of oddly specific places and free things, the National Mustard Museum was a requirement for the beginning of our trip. Our first hotel stop being in Middleton, Wisconsin, this museum was one of the first planned destinations my husband and I went while on our almost two week adventure. I personally have been a fan of mustard since kindergarten when I used to eat just cheese and mustard on bread, which is an odd choice but who is going to argue with a six year old about food? I was excited to explore a place dedicated to my favorite condiment, learn more about mustard, see the World's largest collection of mustard, and hopefully find something stellar in the gift shop. I ended up purchasing 2 mustards, a T-shirt, and a kids book for my nephew. This free museum was definitely worth the time spent inside.

Yelp
What a fun place! The staff was very friendly and we 100% enjoyed our mustard tasting. Brought home a cat nip toy and it was an instant hit. The museum is one of the quirky little places I truly enjoy. It won't take long at all to browse through the museum, but if you read every single label, you could probably stay all day. Just don't wear a tshirt support ketchup!

Yelp
I am always looking for quirky things when I travel. We were in town moving my adult kid into her new apartment and decided to visit this place and we were not disappointed. We were able to park on the street just in front of the museum. Once you enter, you were greeted by someone at the desk who warmly explained how the museum worked and to start downstairs where all of the museum artifacts and information was. Upstairs is an expensive gift shop and tasting area. Honestly, I've never been so excited to learn about mustard. It was really cool to see all the different varieties from all over. Upstairs, we did try a few of them and really enjoyed the bourbon mustard and then one other local spicy brown mustard that started with the letter K. Everybody was so helpful and nice. We got a few souvenirs and even ordered a hot pretzel, which was delicious. I highly recommend it. There's no charge to get in, but I would definitely spend some additional money on some mustard gifts and souvenirs. It probably takes an hour or so to go through and they have air-conditioning, which is really nice. I think it's suitable for all ages. Great activity. I actually would go back and spend a little more time looking at all of the items and reading all of the displays and watching the little movie.
google avatar

Yelp
Friendly staff and lots of fun choices what a great place. They have so many choices for mustard I bought my co workers gifts. It was fun. Got to sample some and that helped with buying a few or a few to many lol. Found my new favorite one. The museum is in the basement and had a lot of interesting and unique history go you won't be disappointed
google avatar

Yelp
Yes a mustard museum and mustard store. The museum is downstairs. It literally has a mustard vending machine; we bought Everything But the Bagel Mustard; so good! Before purchasing mustards for ourselves and fam/ friends, we sampled quite a few. They had vastly different flavor profiles. I bought a French horseradish Dijon, a Hot German, and a house favorite, in addition to the EBTB mustard. Upstairs also has lots of gifts/ souvenirs too. Fun place! I recommend it if in the Middleton WI area.
google avatar

Yolanda G.

Yelp
This place is the perfect place for a mustard lover. The downstairs features mustard bottles/ containers from all over the world. Upstairs there is mustard swag and shop where there a ton of mustards to choose from. There is a mustard tasting bar where they have a good amount of selections to try if you are debating between a few. Great place to stop by for some mustard and to take the kids to check out.
google avatar

Mollie G.

Yelp
A fun little place to go to if you're in Madison! They also have samples of mustard you can try
google avatar

Amber S.

Yelp
What a fun place! The kids had fun checking out the mustards from around the US and the world. They also had fun trying some "funky" mustards too. I do wish there would have been an employee downstairs to talk about the displays or give some fun facts. Would definitely come back.
google avatar

Sho R.

Yelp
The concept was interesting. Plus the museum is free. I was in the area and decided to make a quick visit. There is one floor (one big living room) full of different types of mustards, mustard serving vessets etc. There was also a small room where video of facts surrounding mustard history is played continously. On the ground floor there were items for purchase including different mustards, spreaders, rubber chickens and non alcoholic beverages. I tried a spicy ginger soda, and it was good.
google avatar

Yelp
Took a small day trip out to the Middleton area and what a cute downtown! One of the things this area offers is the National Mustard Museum. The main level is a shop with an impressive variety of mustards of every flavor imaginable. The lower level is a small free exhibit detailing the history of mustards and showcasing a small historical collection. They have a sampling station in the gift shop so you can try before you by which is always a nice feature. Unique stop - and worth the visit while bouncing between the cute boutiques and coffee shops of the area.

Kevin F.

Yelp
It was a very unusual because it's Mustard! But there are SO Many varieties of mustard and different tastes. It was a good experience and I enjoyed the taste testing of various mustards and seeing all the different mustards from around the world and for the ones from different states. I would recommend a visit if you're ever in the area. This place is also close to the Middleton Downtown where there is a lot of other things to do and see. (Especially during the summer months)
google avatar

Kurt M.

Yelp
I have only visited the National Mustard Museum vicariously. However it receives great reviews. Most certainly the most numerous collection of various mustards in North America. As a one-time resident of Wisconsin I can confirm that it seems to easily overtake neighboring Minnesota in quirky, intriguing places. The Mustard Museum is a must see if visiting this neck-of-the-woods. Friends bought a jar of superb German mustard at the gift shop and gave it to me as a treat whereupon I proceeded to enjoy it in a number of ways that went beyond the traditional slathering on sandwiches. Mmm... Delicious!
google avatar

Rachel L.

Yelp
One of the oddest museums I have ever stepped foot into, yet one of the most interesting. Was in Madison for their half marathon weekend and it was a cold and rainy weekend. We ended up online searching for indoor activities and this place popped up. 20 minutes away, we decided to drive and check it out. I don't know what to say to describe it.... But if you like mustard in any way shape or form, this is your safe haven! They had thousands of mustards, and varieties I would have never imagined existed. Hundreds you could taste (and buy, of course). Basement had a video going showing the history of mustard and how it has impacted the world. I won't give any spoilers: check it out yourself :)
google avatar

Bruce K.

Yelp
Mustard. Mustard for days. Jars, tubes, cans and displays of mustard, mustard, mustard! How is is manufactured, how it was used as medicine, how it's mentioned four times by Shakespeare (and ketchup exactly never). Jars of mustard from around the world. A long wall of mustards from other countries and other states. Movies about mustard in the "Mustardpiece Theatre." Mustard games. Mustard trivia. Upstairs, all sorts of mustards for sale along with Mustard Museum memorabilia. I bought two jars of mustard (check the "clearance" shelf in the corner) and some post cards and such. Really interesting stuff and the museum is free! [Round number review 20700 overall - 270 in Wisconsin - 1681 of 2023.]

Traxsguy S.

Yelp
Originally started in Mt Horib, and long ignored by this writter, I finally took the time to visit the new location in Middleton. It's a hoot. How many mustards are there in the world? It tuns out, a whole bunch. It was touristy and it plays that up. None the less, it was a fun visit and worth a stop. Experience Poupon U. Top it off with a visit next door to the Hubbard Ave Diner. Good sandwiches and malts and pies. Lots of pies.
google avatar

Janet S.

Yelp
Even if you are not a mustard fan its good fun. A great little interactive museum downstairs and a cracking video on the history of mustard. Upstairs, mustard tasting and shelves of mustard and mustard themed products to buy. Something for all ages to do here.
google avatar

Donald L.

Yelp
Ok, well, honestly I haven't been there in maybe five years, but the place was/in phenomenal.
google avatar

PJ C.

Yelp
It has been over ten years since we last visited this museum - well before we relocated to Madison. We had also toured its old location in Mount Horeb a really long time ago. We were nearby in Middleton running errands on a rainy day and decided to pop in. A fine tourist stop for fan's of mustard. The museum in the basement has a great collection of mustards from around the world and mustard related paraphernalia. The owner of the museum is a lover of bad mustard puns and that is evident throughout. The upstairs has a wide variety of mustards, mustard related gifts and other things to purchase. The staff is very friendly. An odd-ball attraction that is worth a detour.
google avatar

Susan C.

Yelp
A tribute to mustard! How delightful. Be sure to hit the mustard tasting ... so many delicious combos. Shelves and shelves of mustard from all over the world. They even have a mustard a month club. They have restrooms and Public parking is about a block away. The staff is very helpful and friendly.
google avatar

KC C.

Yelp
If quirky is your thing, this is a perfect stop! Upstairs is a gift shop with mustards from around the world. Downstairs is a small museum with the history of mustard and displays of mustards from around the world over the years. Fun little stop for an hour or two.

Lucy Y.

Yelp
Ok not only will you gain knowledge on a condiment. there is humor all over the place to make it fun. You can even get a sweatshirt from the university of Poupon U... plus some fun photo ops. I've been here a few times and it's been fun but most importantly the CUSTOMER SERVICE IS MAGNIFICENT...... I had to call the museum to get some info I couldn't get anywhere else (the sweet gal will know what that's about if she reads this hopefully) and she went above and beyond to get me that info. Anyways if you were that sweet gal that helped me I just want to say thank you again for going the extra mile.
google avatar

Olivia W.

Yelp
Yes yes yes! This is a hidden gem in Madison that I have been telling everyone I meet to go to. Not only does it have history of mustards, mustard from around the country (and world), and a gift shop with hundreds of mustards it has a free mustard tasting bar. I didn't even know I liked mustard that much until I tried lots of them. They had sweet, savory, spicy and so much more. I am waiting to go back!! If you are in Madison for the day, I highly recommend!!!
google avatar

Karen N.

Yelp
First I have to say I do not like mustard, but what a unique, fun museum. When you first walk in you are immediately greeted by friendly staff instructing us about the store, tastings and museum. We started with the museum self guided tour! It had everything you can imagine related to mustard. It had every kind of memorabilia you can imagine. The collection of mustard jars I particularly was interested in. My husband tasted a few mustards accompanied with pretzels. If you are in the area, it is worth to stop in for 20 - 30 minutes.
google avatar

Monique H.

Yelp
Mustard. Museum worthy? Heck yes. Spent some time in Madison, WI and the only museum open on a Monday was this gem. Take a history tour of mustards from around the world, learn about the mustard making process, play some trivia, and taste mustards that you couldn't have even imagine existed....I'm looking at you, root beer flavored mustard. The downstairs is where you'll find mustard memorabilia and the wall of mustards. Upstairs is the gift shop and tasting area. I went home with some curry mustard and I'm hooked. It's a fun place, if a little odd, but I like odd. Stop in!
google avatar

Christine H.

Yelp
This was a fun/random stop during our weekend in Madison! It's free to get in but they suggest a $2 donation. You can make it through pretty quickly, an hour tops but we had fun playing mustard ring toss, checking out the wall of mustard and learning some fun facts about mustard (if there is such a thing). One of the best parts was the ability to sample unique mustards! The shop also has some unique items, it's worth checking out!
google avatar

Douglas B.

Yelp
Very interesting museum with mustard and related items from around the world. The store has a nice selection of mustards and a tasting bar. If you like sweet & hot mustard, I highly recommend picking up a jar of their own Slimm & Nunne Sweet & Nicely Hot Mustard (you can try it at the tasting bar). The store has some eclectic gift items and a friendly staff. Definitely worth the visit!
google avatar

Michele B.

Yelp
Do you like unique and interesting roadside oddities? This is the place for you! We walked through the store portion and crept down the stairs. Mustards from everywhere lined the walls! What a sight to see! We tried our hand at the mustard ring toss. Only one of us four was able to ring a free bottle to take home! We learned about mustard deed, read about the hist, admired the mustard dish collection, and were amazed people used to bathe in it for health cures. So much to see and learn. Then the best part! Upstairs we went to try some mustards! The weirdest was the root beer flavored one. We found our favorites. Some honey mustard and pretzels. Plus tales to intrigue our friends!

Aimee T.

Yelp
Great little museum. Lots to look at and it's not over done or pretentious. Sample bar was great and overall it was a great way to spend an hour. Highly recommend
google avatar

Pamela R.

Yelp
Quirky space full of mustard memorabilia downstairs and variety of mustards in the market to sample and take home! Downstairs you'll enjoy a self guided, free tour and "Mustard Piece Theater" with very dated videos specifically a mustard tasting. Fun stop as you make your way through the beautiful downtown area.
google avatar

Isabelle L.

Yelp
To me this is more a mustard store than a mustard museum. Yes the downstairs area has a wide collection of mustard jars from all around the world but there is not a lot of effort put into the display and the old short TV movie playing in the back room is in serious need of a redo. Yes it's free but the education value I would expect from a museum is pretty much non existent here. Now if you are looking to buy or try mustards, this is in no doubt the place to go. You will find award winning mustards you won't be able to find at your local supermarket. If you are in the area with a few minutes to kill, by all means stop by and all the jars of mustards might spike your curiosity. But I would not drive out the way to visit this "museum" which is what we did and it was not worth the detour.
google avatar

Heather C.

Yelp
I was so excited to finally get here! Went downstairs first to do the tour of the museum. It's a pretty large space and super awesome how much stuff they have. I really can't believe how many different mustards there are. There's even a spot in the back that plays a video! The sampling upstairs in the store part was amazing. You can basically sample anything and they were all so tasty. I couldn't believe I liked every one I tried. It was hard to make a decision on which ones to buy but I walked out with 3 and a small sample pack of 4. Staff was very friendly and the store and museum were very clean. I would definitely make a stop in there again to get more super good mustards!

Nick H.

Yelp
The selection was amazing! The museum on the bottom floor was fun and well done. Anyone who likes unique mustards (like Bacon Pecan honey mustards) should give this place a try! They also provide free samples of a small portion of their product

Wendy G.

Yelp
Fun place! Unexpectedly interesting! Learned so much about mustard. Had no idea there were so many different kinds.

Julie H.

Yelp
Great place to sample, purchase and look at the amazing history of Mustard! The basement has a full museum.
google avatar

Michelle C.

Yelp
I'm a converted mustard girl. We later went to a restaurant and I had to turn the ketchup bottle away from me out of guilt. All hail mustard! You venture downstairs to see the wonderful world of Brassica juncea. I loved the interactive exhibits, although I didn't like the results of the fortune telling gumball machine (I got 3 out of 4 green with envy). There's a neat little movie you can watch about the must'. There was mustard from all states, even Canada- my favorite state! There's vintage ads that'll knock your pants off silly. Lots of mustard paraphernalia. I would love to meet the curator someday, seems like my kind of kooky guy. Upstairs you'll find a gift shop and mustard tasting station. Come with a clean palette. Beware the truffle mustard, because you might choke on it and start crying. TLDR: come for the must', just avoid the truff must.
google avatar

Landee F.

Yelp
A MUST visit if you're in the area! I had the pleasure of going to the Mustard Museum on my last trip to WI and was blown away at their mustard selection! The bottom floor is the history behind mustard & really interesting original mustard jars. The top floor has endless amount of different mustards, mustard-related gifts, and more! There is a staff member there that displays various mustards to try and they go into great detail about each mustard. It's honestly hard to choose a favorite! There's more types of mustards than I could have ever imagined. My personal 'go-to' is the Ringhand's Beer Mustard...I put it on everything! It's a lot more flavorful than the yellow mustard in stores but not too strong like some other mustards can be. I can't go back to store mustard now...thanks for spoiling me!! :) Oh & for others who may not be local, their online store is great with reasonable shipping too! Definitely worth checking out the store location!

Yelp
This place is a great example of passion turned into an attraction. It's free to tour, but you will be craving the 'golden' stuff to take home. During an apartment hunting trip we ended our adventure at this little side bar. We just wanted something local to take back home. Six Mustards and a Tee Shirt were just the items we returned with... the nostalgia and history of mustard was really fun to see. They claim you can travel the world among the 4,000 mustards... which is what we did, learning about Dijon, Horse Radish and Tumeric ingredients was just the beginning. The mustard seed and market pricing in the video, really demonstrates how this is a niche and the rewards are celebrated in each bottle. Honey, Hot... served with pretzels or sausage, we had a great time shopping and learning. Touring facility should alot for 1-2hrs, pending the time taken to pick a favorite. The tasting bar was closed... due to pandemic. So we went with our Mustard Somalie suggestions. We ate half a jar, dipping pretzels on the way home. Please visit and enjoy... Carpe' Dijon!
google avatar

Susan M.

Yelp
You think to yourself "why would there be a museum for mustard?" And then you think "why would I go there?" But you go because ..you're not sure why go. But then it's quirky and lovely. And you find yourself having a favorite mustard and making a list of mustards to try. And for weeks after all you snack on is pretzels and fancy mustard even though previously you never really loved mustard. 10/10
google avatar

Sarah I.

Yelp
Love it!!!! Last time I was here they were located in Mount Hoerb, WI. The new space is very nice. The museum is located in the basement and the gift shop upstairs. You can sample all of the mustards they sell. The staff is incredibly friendly. I definitely recommend checking this place out it's one of a kind! I'm a huge fan of mustard so it was awesome sampling different kinds and buying some amazing mustards! I recommend the truffle mustard and the maple bourbon mustard!!!
google avatar

Kendra L.

Yelp
I mean, if you want a mustard museum. This is the right place. A self guided tour takes you through many nationalities and time periods of mustard. The little theater can take you back in time to festivals where mustard is King. Upstairs, you can try any or all of the many varieties of mustard. Maybe you will find that you like a fruit mustard, or a spicy mustard, or a purple mustard. Check it out. Even if it is a short time.
google avatar

Diane R.

Yelp
Who loves mustard? If you do please make a stop here. Such a knowledgeable attentive and nice group of mustard aficionados. You may taste and buy some unusual mustards. The tour and tastings are free.
google avatar

Emma J.

Yelp
Amazing costumer service, this place was so fun and tasty. I learned a lot about mustard as well as got to sample a variety of different flavors!
google avatar

Eric B.

Yelp
It's a gimmick - this said it's a kinda sorta decent local kitschy gift shop. I wouldn't make a special trip or anything... but if you're in the neighborhood and have never been... well maybe give it a look see.
google avatar

Anthony K.

Yelp
This place is insane!!! If you like mustard, then you must stop here. They have just about every type from the USA and a large assortment from around the world. You can taste all the ones they sell to see what makes your fancy. They do allow ordering online through their website. There is also small museum in the basement...educational also.
google avatar

Mark G.

Yelp
We are on a road trip for spring break and we were looking for off the beaten path sights to see. So what that it's small, it's cool. The upstairs is the shop which has 500 different types of mustard to buy, plus little knickknacks. Downstairs is the actual museum. There are mustards from the US and around the world. In addition to all that there is a vending machine that you can buy mustard out of. The only mustard vending machine in the world. When it was all said and done we bought and $30 worth of different mustard.
google avatar

Melissa S.

Yelp
I love this place. I'm sad there are no tasting of the mustards but there are so many choices . There are also dips and sweet toppings and tshirts to purchase. You can check out downstairs where the museum is to learn about mustards or see the variety of new and old types of what was available around the world. Staff are helpful and friendly and know where to direct you to what you may want. Usually you can sample things through out the shop or ask for numerous tastings of the mustards but not at this point. I really like the onion type or some of the sweet mustards you can also get bbq sauce . If you like different types of mustards you need to go here.
google avatar

Jacob H.

Yelp
If you're a huge fan of mustard this is the place to go! Not going to lie it's just literally mustard and that's all. But! If you are crazy for mustard it has the history of mustard and you can see mustard for each state and years. Also you can watch a mustard video in the basement.
google avatar

M H.

Yelp
Worth a visit! The verity of mustard was like nothing I've seen or tasted. I love that you can sample and buy delicious mustard. The museum was interesting- I love learning new things.
google avatar

B N.

Yelp
This place was awesome!! The museum portion is on the lower lever. Fun facts to read and learn about mustard. The upstairs had a great selection if you wanted to make a purchase. Due to Covid the tasting bar was closed but the staff was extremely friendly and helpful! We drove out of way for this stop and it was well worth it!
