Why 2023 is the year to visit Phnom Penh - SilverKris

"A landmark example of New Khmer Architecture from the 1950s–60s, the stadium illustrates the city’s post-independence architectural ambition and is commonly included on guided tours that explore works by Vann Molyvann, offering insight into Phnom Penh’s mid-century urban character before later upheavals." - Tara Sering

Been here since kids with my dad. Grow up around the area with many many memories remembered but never had a proper picture here. Was here again after years during Vanda Treyvisai concert. The feeling, and the connection between myself with Olympic stadium is unmatch.

The best place for running, to have access inside you have to pay 2,000R. Recommend inside for running if you don’t want any distraction and prefer less crowd.

A really nice example of how concrete doesn’t need to be ugly or brutalist. The staff were really friendly and let me go onto the outfield to take some pictures.

Superb building of modern postcolonial architecture designed by Vann Molyvann in 1964. It can easily be entered to visit on days when there is no event.

Olympic Stadium is one of the oldest stadiums in Southeast Asia to continue and hosting big games. It was built in 1963 and opened in 1964. At the time, it was truly a masterpiece, built intending to host the short-lived GANEFO and other grand spectacle games/ceremony in Cambodia. The seating is massive considering the country’s population size, max capacity up to 70,000. It was renovated to host football games during the SEA Games 2023 by adding seats and limiting the capacity to just around 50,000. I'm glad that the Stadium continue to play crucial role in Cambodia's sporting events and matches. Fun fact, during the 1966 FIFA World Cup qualification play-off Asia v Oceania between North Korea and Australia, the Olympic Stadium was the neutral home for both countries, due to some travel restrictions. North Korea won both legs and advanced to 1966 World Cup Group Stage.
