New Zealand Road Trip Itinerary: 2-4 Weeks (Updated 2025)

"I based myself at National Park Alpine Lodge for the Tongariro trek and found it budget-friendly with private rooms, a communal kitchen and common area, a cozy fireplace for cold nights, and helpful staff; it's ideally located in National Park Village for the crossing." - Matthew Kepnes

A great place to stay if you want to break up the drive between Auckland and Wellington. It's well priced and has a restaurant, bar and a communal kitchen.

Great family run lodge with an owner who really cares about the experience. Booked a single room which was affordable, quiet and has a sink and towel provided. Had dinner and drinks in the bar which were also good and well priced. Facilities were clean and very close to the room. Would recommend staying here.

Very nice lodge, super clean, well organized, big kitchen for use, cozy common area. We stayed in a deluxe double room (comfortable bed), with shared toilets and bathrooms in the hallway, and this was very manageable: no waiting times, all very hygienic and tidy. Our room was small but perfect for one night. However, the walls are thin, so you have to be a bit lucky with your neighbors. And things start early in the morning - the first shuttle for the Tongariro Crossing leaves just after sunrise - with quite a buzz in the corridors. So then your night's sleep probably will be over. Please note that reception and the adjacent shop are not open all evening (and only again from 8 am the next morning). We did not realize this and therefore missed useful information regarding the trek. Anyway, we were absolutely happy with our choice staying here. Good vibe.

This place is awesome! Joy the owner is great she checked me in $67 NZ for a private room twin bed, shared HOT shower w/ great pressure and nice big lounge and commercial style kitchen with great WiFi and laundry! Good food at Da Pub as well, kitchen closes around 8p, bar closed at 8:30p open Wed-Saturday :)

Simple yet perfect hostel. Rooms are clean, restrooms and showers also. Kitchen is well equiped and the host is super nice. Shuttle for Tongariro Alpine crossing took us at the front door. Would go back again. Thank you Joy!

Had a 2 night stay here recently. Budget accomodation for very reasonable prices, it's not a 5 star hotel but that's not what you are paying for. I found the kitchen and bathroom areas to be very clean, ample space in the kitchen, a nice comfortable and inviting lounge area. Room was comfy and other guests were respectful. Good proximity to the train station. Staff are very welcoming and accommodating and friendly. I would highly recommend to anyone looking for budget accomodation for a few nights

At first I was excited to have a sink in the single room and yes, it was admittedly quite convenient. However, it made the entire room reek like a drain pipe. The stench was so bad I could not sleep, even with my windows left open throughout the night. Would NOT recommend.

I didn't realise this place existed, I rode past on my way to the National Park Railway station. YAY they did coffee, proper espresso, barister made coffee.
